      The Dam Is Breaking

Ah. Now this selloff is more like it. Those lame attempts to keep up the Commerce Ones (CMRC:Nasdaq - news - boards) and the Akamais (AKAM:Nasdaq - news - boards) failed. Still some hand-jive going on in Foundry (FDRY:Nasdaq - news - boards) and Vignette (VIGN:Nasdaq - news - boards), but those have a bit of the dutch-boy-dike feel to them.

We are waiting for Nasdaq Comp 3500 to fail so we can do another round of buying. We will probably buy an NDX derivative call to get long it. But right now when you combine the sales we made with the small buys, we are still net cash out, not in.

Could they whoosh them up? Oh sure. Can the mutual-fund complex just pull up its stakes and go home? Unlikely.

But right now the way one seasoned pro who has seen it all told me this morning: "Lotta guys on the bridge, but no one`s jumped yet." Fitting.

      Wait till they jump.

      Finally Committing New Capital

Remember those guys on the bridge debating their fates? Who would have thunk it? Greenspan just jumped on the bridge and pushed a bunch of them off. His speech, filled with nothing but unreassuring statements, isn`t what this market needs.

We are getting no phone calls. No one is trying to sell that we can tell even as many people are selling! We sure wish big institutions would cough up some size positions. With the S&P 500 sitting on the 200-day moving average, we want to buy something.

As always, we are focused on what can turn things around and, as always, we are open-minded enough to do our rounds of 5,000s. We are financing those purchases, mostly NDX stocks, with sales of soft-goods stocks that have had nice runs. I notice from our cash level though that we have finally started committing new capital.

If I hear another person ask, "Is this the bottom?" -- I will shoot him.

This one`s going to be on the cover of The New York Times. This one is going to be talked about all weekend on TV. This one is tsunami-like and it will finally rattle the consciences of those who thought all they ever had to do was buy and hold.

We like that. After we see tomorrow`s headlines we will know that the panic of Monday -- even if they fade the opening --will be a much better day than this one in the end. As I write, I know that if we rally today it is just one of those bear-covering Fridays like those of 1990 or 1994 and the summer of 1998. You have to sell it in order to buy it on Monday.

We have made our commitments for the day unless we hit below Nasdaq 3240 -- where we just got to. We are sellers if we go back to even today. Sorry.
