Nanjing Panda <0553.HK> sees challenges ahead

HONG KONG, April 27 (Reuters) - Nanjing Panda Electronics Co Ltd, which emerged into the black after two years of heavy losses, on Thursday predicted challenges and stiff competition in coming years with China`s entry into the World Trade Organisation.

But the mainland Chinese company, which has diversified from manufacturing televisions into mobile phones and digital video disc (DVD) players, said it would press ahead with restructuring plans and developing high-technology products.

The company announced on Wednesday a net profit of 10.44 million yuan for the year ended December 31, 1999, compared to a loss of 496.63 million yuan in 1998. "China`s entry into the WTO will pose certain pressure to the company, but will in the long term be positive to the company`s development," it said in a statement.

It added that it would strengthen international cooperation and cut costs to adapt to any negative impact.

At a news conference on Thursday, chairman Li Anjian said 1999 was tough given fierce competition and a plunge in television prices amidst a glut in the market.

Looking ahead, Li said the company would develop mobile telecommunication services and press on with producing quality televisions apart from "accelerating assets reorganisation and strengthening internal reforms." The company, which is in partnership with Swedish telecommunications giant Ericsson in manufacturing mobile telephones on mainland China, said it would manufacture 700,000 mobile telephones in 2000. "China`s market is only one-third tapped.

Kann es sein, daß sie Ericcson als Partner ganz schnell wieder verlieren, wenn der WTO-Beitritt kommt? Ericcson braucht dann womöglich keine Minderheitsbeteiligung mehr im Land, um liefern zu dürfen. Sind solche sachen geklärt?

in Asien gibt es ein schönes Phänomen, wessen sich auch Ericsson bewußt sein dürfte, denn wer in Asien als nicht Asiate Geschäfte machen will, der braucht Asiaten und die möglichst noch aus dem selben Land, indem man Geschäfte machen möchte.

Ericsson dürfte sich also höchstens einen neuen Partner suchen, aber das wäre zuviel Aufwand, aufgrund der Beteiligung.
