Quebec in talks with battery, auto makers for C$15 bln in EV-related investments

TORONTO, Sept 29 (Reuters) - Quebec is in talks with battery makers and automobile companies looking to invest about C$15 billion ($11 billion) in the Canadian province over the next three years to build electric vehicle (EV) supply chains, the head of its government-owned investment company told Reuters.

Quebec is leveraging its rich critical mineral resources and an EV supply chain that it has put in place to attract companies to the province. The move is aimed at helping auto makers to diversify their supply chains and increase their reliance on reliable partners like Canada, Investissement Quebec CEO Guy LeBlanc said on Thursday.

LeBlanc said Quebec has secured C$15 billion over the past three years and another C$15 billion is coming in the next three years.

"When Quebec was putting together a plan for being a leader in North America for battery metals, it was not known as a destination for car manufacturing or making auto parts," LeBlanc said. He added that the Canadian province decided to play to its strengths and develop a strategy to promote its critical mineral resources, including lithium, nickel and graphite.

Over the past three years, Quebec has attracted investments from auto and battery makers such as General Motors (GM.N) POSCO (GM.N) and Ford Motors (F.N). The biggest investment was announced on Thursday when Swedish battery maker Northvolt announced plans to build a $5.2 billion plant in the province.

Perspectives: A Tale of Two Markets

Can Rest of the World (RoW) graphite producers compete with China on price as the EV revolution unfolds?

Going forward there will be two markets for graphite, the heavily-state-subsidized Chinese market, where graphite is produced with minimal environmental and sustainability restrictions as China feeds its ambition to dominate the global EV industry, and the
North American markets, where automakers will have to use locally sourced graphite, be it natural or synthetic, for the Lithium-Ion batteries that power their cars.

The industries will develop along parallel but separate lines, and the days when the fortunes ofglobal graphite markets waxed and waned with the amount of graphite China sold into the global market will recede into the rearview mirror.

      Graphite demand outpaces EV sales

By 2035, graphite demand could by 8X 2022 mine production Critical Minerals Alliances 2023 - September 12, 2023

very electric vehicle rolling off an assembly line increases the demand for graphite by an average of around 160 pounds. With more than 30 million EVs expected to hit global highways each year by 2030 and upwards of 45 million by 2045, the transition to e-mobility will require up to eight times more graphite than was mined globally during 2022.

While graphite has not received the attention of other EV battery ingredients such as cobalt, lithium, and nickel, this highly useful cousin to diamonds and coal is the single largest ingredient in lithium batteries. The reason for this is that while all the current EV battery technologies rely on some mixture of elements in the cathode (negative electrode), graphite does more than 90% of the heavy lifting on the anode (positive electrode) side.

"Increases in graphite demand will be predominantly driven by its use as the anode active material in batteries for EVs and stationary energy storage systems," the U.S. Department of Energy penned in its 2023 Critical Materials Assessment.

The demand for graphite is expected to outpace the number of new electric cars, trucks, vans, and SUVs hitting global highways as the nascent EV sector matures, according to Adamas Intelligence's biannual "State of Charge" report published in March.

Northern Graphite Announces Second Quarter 2023 Results
August 30, 2023: Northern Graphite Corporation (NGC:TSX-V, NGPHF:OTCQB, FRA:0NG, XSTU:0NG) (the “Company” or “Northern") is pleased to provide an operating and financial summary of results for the three- and six-month periods ended June 30, 2023. The Company’s Financial Statements and Management’s Discussion and Analysis are available on SEDAR+ and on our website.

Operational Summary for the second quarter:

Graphite Sales: Graphite sales were weak over the first half of 2023 which adversely affected the Company’s financial performance. This was largely due to destocking by customers and increased competition from Chinese suppliers after EV subsidies were removed in that country. These factors also affected the Company’s ability to monetize inventories and improve liquidity. Sales rose each month over the course of the second quarter as global market conditions improved, however, and the Company believes this trend will continue going forward as China has reintroduced subsidies on electric vehicles which will lead to increased consumption of domestic graphite production.

Mine-to-Market Strategy: The Company advanced its mine-to-market strategy in the second quarter by signing a letter of intent with the city of Baie-Comeau to purchase land for a planned 200,000 tonne per year Battery Anode Material (“BAM”) plant. The Baie-Comeau plant will upgrade graphite that Northern produces into high-value products critical to the green economy, including anode material for Lithium-Ion batteries, fuel cells and graphene. The Company also continued to engage with leading technology companies on partnerships to support development of the Baie-Comeau facility.

Downstream integration in non-BAM applications: The Company is pursuing opportunities to move downstream into non-EV applications in the electronics, construction, graphene and hydrogen fuel cell markets. These markets provide the opportunity to increase revenues and profits through further processing of the Company’s graphite mine concentrates. The Company has entered into an agreement with Edgewater Capital Partners to extend Northern’s option to acquire an ownership interest in NeoGraf Solutions, LLC for six months until February, 2024.

Lac des Iles: The Company launched a new drilling program designed to extend the life of its cornerstone, Lac des Iles graphite mine in Quebec (“LDI”), with preliminary results showing promise that the mine will continue to be a critical supplier of natural graphite to the growing EV battery markets.

Okanjande: The Company announced results of a new preliminary economic assessment (“PEA”) on its Namibian operations that indicated attractive economics under a plan to move the processing plant previously located at Okorusu to the Okanjande mine rather than rehabilitating the mill in its current location.

CEO Hugues Jacquemin commented, “Traditional graphite markets were weak in the first half of 2023 which adversely affected our financial position and performance. This is being addressed through aggressive cost reductions and efforts to reduce/finance inventories. We see some signs conditions are improving as battery markets grow and Chinese supply is increasingly focused on their domestic markets. The Company has made good strides toward our mine-to-market strategy, advancing across our key growth catalysts including increased graphite production and laying the groundwork to start producing BAM at Baie-Comeau in 2026. Conversations are advancing with key technology partners to better serve our downstream customers and to be able to make Baie-Comeau into one of the largest, cleanest BAM plants in the world. Final results aren’t in yet, but we are optimistic that our cornerstone Lac des Iles mine will be producing for a lot longer than initially expected when we bought it a year ago.”

Northern Graphite Signs Extension on Option to Acquire Stake in NeoGraf Solutions
August 29, 2023: Northern Graphite Corporation (NGC:TSX-V, NGPHF:OTCQB, FRA:0NG, XSTU:0NG) (the “Company” or “Northern") is pleased to announce that it has entered into an agreement with Edgewater Capital Partners (“Edgewater”) to extend the Company’s option to acquire a stake in NeoGraf Solutions, LLC (“NeoGraf”).

With this six-month extension, Northern has the option to acquire an effective 50.1% voting interest and a 33.3% equity interest in NeoGraf. Northern also has an option to increase its interest up to 100%, at a later date, subject to the terms and conditions of the agreement. Northern has engaged Sprott Capital Partners LP to act as its financial advisor with respect to financing the investment.

NeoGraf is one of Northern’s largest customers and, including its time as a part of Union Carbide, has a history of over 100 years serving clients in North America and abroad. It is a leading provider of specialty, value-added products manufactured from natural graphite and has a strong intellectual property portfolio and a blue-chip customer base.

“Due to the potential of the proposed partnership between Northern and Edgewater to contribute to NeoGraf’s future success, Edgewater has agreed to extend the term of the option from six- to 12 months, in order to give us more time to effectively close the deal in a challenging market environment,” said Northern Chief Executive Officer Hugues Jacquemin. “The acquisition of this stake in NeoGraf will be a critical driver of our downstream strategy to be an integrated and sustainable mine-to-market company.”

“We are very pleased at the prospect of partnering with Hugues and the Northern team to accelerate NeoGraf’s growth and in support of Northern’s ‘mine-to-market’ strategy. This partnership provides NeoGraf an additional ’tool’ in enabling our customers’ success and enhances our ability to address supply needs in this quickly growing marketspace,” said Edgewater Capital Partner and current Chairman of the Board, Robert Girton.

“Together, NeoGraf and Northern promise a powerful combination in the development of high-performance technical solutions that address our customers’ specific needs,” Natesh Krishnan, CEO of NeoGraf, commented. “Northern provides NeoGraf with greater security of supply and expands the geographic regions from which we source our graphite.”

Closing of Northern’s investment is subject to the execution of definitive agreements, the receipt of all required third party and regulatory approvals including, if applicable, approval of the TSX Venture Exchange and to Northern completing satisfactory financing arrangements.

Where are North America’s battery anode plants being built?

The electrification of the global transportation system doesn’t happen without graphite. That’s because the lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles are composed of an anode (negative) on one side and a cathode (positive) on the other. Graphite is used in the anode.

The cathode is where metals like lithium, nickel, manganese and cobalt are used. Depending on the battery chemistry, there are different options available to battery makers. Not so for graphite, a material for which there are no substitutes.

      ...

      Natural vs synthetic

Given that several of the above plants are proposing to make anodes from synthetic versus natural graphite, it’s important to know the difference.

Natural graphite is mined whereas synthetic or artificial graphite is produced by heating petroleum coke feedstock in a special furnace. Because synthetic graphite must be baked at 3,000 degrees Celsius, this method is costly and very energy-intensive. Battery Power Online states the graphite anode is responsible for 50% of the CO2 emissions from battery production, and that synthetic graphite is often processed with coal power in Mongolia.

Last year, Fastmarkets wrote that Producing spherical graphite out of natural mined flake material requires less energy than the Acheson furnace process employed in synthetic graphitization.

The latter is obviously reflected in a significant cost savings for natural graphite, which is priced around half that of synthetic.

Moreover, natural flake graphite exhibits a much higher crystalline structure than synthetic, and is therefore more electrically and thermally conductive. According to Canada Carbon, natural graphite’s ability to be exfoliated and then pressed into sheets make it the preferred structure for heat sinks, fuel cells and gaskets.

While the current graphite mix in China is about 80% synthetic and 20% natural (most anode technologies employ a blend of both), the surging costs related to graphitization of synthetic have Chinese battery manufacturers considering a shift to using more natural graphite.

      Conclusion

Northern Graphite Completes Preliminary Economic Assessment on Relocating Processing Plant for Namibian Operations

      - New Plan Indicates Reduced GHG Emissions, Improved Sustainability and Enhanced Expansion Potential
      - Move Supports Northern’s Strategy to be a Competitive Supplier to Battery Anode Material (“BAM”) Markets

Ottawa, Ontario, August 28, 2023: Northern Graphite Corporation (NGC:TSX-V, NGPHF:OTCQB, FRA:0NG, XSTU:0NG) (the “Company” or “Northern”) is pleased to announce the results of a new preliminary economic assessment (“PEA”) that evaluated moving the processing plant for its Namibian operations located at Okorusu to the Okanjande mine rather than rehabilitating the mill in its current location.

The PEA indicates that economics remain attractive under the new plan, with higher capital costs but lower operating costs. In addition, greenhouse gas (“GHG”) emissions are reduced, sustainability is improved, and the expansion potential of the project is substantially enhanced.

The PEA, issued July 31, 2023, was prepared by CREO Engineering Solutions and confirms the viability of moving milling operations directly to the Okanjande mine site, which eliminates the cost of trucking mineralized material 70km to Okorusu. This allows for a more sustainable operation that also includes the use of solar power and lower water consumption.

“Moving the mill also provides room for potential future expansion from the perspective of both processing and tailings capacity, which is something we do not have at the current location,” said Northern Chief Operating Officer Kirsty Liddicoat. “The new approach also incorporates dry tailings into an integrated waste landform which means less water use and a more sustainable operation in support of the green transition,” she added.
