Tsingshan says Argentina lithium plan with Eramet to total $1.7 billion
BEIJING/PARIS (Reuters) - Chinese steel giant Tsingshan and French mining group Eramet plan to invest more than $1.7 billion in two stages of a lithium production project in Argentina, Tsingshan said in a statement on Thursday.

The partners are due to start producing lithium in Argentina next year under a first phase that Eramet has estimated will represent around $550 million in capital expenditure.

As the take up of electric vehicles increases demand for lithium, the French firm has also said it is studying a second stage to triple output compared with the first phase, with a decision expected by the end of 2023.

Chinese battery cash will fuel Europe’s EV drive
Chinese cash is set to fuel Europe’s green mobility challenge. More than one in five cars sold in the continent last year was electric, making the region the world’s second largest market for e-vehicles after China. That offers an enticing new opportunity for the battery makers from the People’s Republic, which already supply European brands such as Volkswagen, BMW and Stellantis, as well as globetrotting compatriots like Volvo-owner Geely. Over-reliance on Chinese market leader CATL and its peers could be a risk. But rival European battery groups are still scarce, and global carmakers have more to gain than lose.

Chinese battery suppliers like Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL), SVOLT, Envision, and most recently EVE Energy, are shaking up Europe’s e-mobility supply chains. The Asian country’s global investments in batteries quadrupled to 14.2 billion euros last year from the year before, Rhodium data show. At 4.5 billion euros, investments in projects to build new plants in Europe overtook spending on mergers and acquisitions. It’s not just battery makers. Suppliers such as Shanghai Putailai New Energy Technology, which produces anodes - a key component allowing current to flow through a battery - are also moving west.
