NORTEL NETWORKS ist und wird einer der Hauptprofiteure im Bereich der Internet-Infrastruktur mit seinen hochwertigen optischen Netzwerksystemen sein. Bis vor Kurzem war Nortel Networks weit davon entfernt, ein Marktführer
im Bereich optische Netzwerke zu sein. Diese Position gehörte seinem Erzrivalen Lucent Technologies. Sogar als neue technologsche Fortschritte wie Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM), die es erlaubten, dass vielfache Lichtstrahlen auf einer einzigen optischen
Faser transportiert wurden, Fahrt aufgenommen hatten, und innovative Neugründungen wie Ciena in diesem Markt Fuß fassen konnten, konnte Lucent an seiner Führungsposition festhalten, und Nortel spielte bis Ende ´99 die zweite Geige. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt brachte Nortel seine
ersten Produkte zur DWDM Übertragung und zum optischen Schalten auf den Markt, die optische Wellenlängen unterstützten, die Verkehr mit einer Geschwindigkeit von 10gbps transportierten, besser bekannt als OC-192.
Zu dieser Zeit hatten Lucent, Ciena, Alcatel, Fujitsu und der Rest von Nortels Wettbewerbern nur Produkte auf dem Markt, die mit 2,5 gbps (OC-48) arbeiteten.

Im letzten Quartal steigerte das Unternehmen, dank
des mörderischen Wachstums, das sein Geschäftsbereich für optische Netzwerke an den Tag legte, seine Erträge um 48% jährlich. Es wird erwartet, dass die Erträge von Nortel aus dem Bereich optische Netzwerke, die zu dieser Zeit nach wie vor im dreistelligen Bereich wachsen sollten, mehr als 65% der Verkäufe des Unternehmens ausmachen.
Im Jahr 2002 sollte diese Zahl im Bereich von 75-80% liegen, und im Jahr 2003 sollte das Wachstum, das Nortel insgesamt an den Tag legt, dank der aus dem optischen Bereich kommenden Verkäufe, ähnlich dem Wachstum sein,
das von „rein optischen“ Unternehmen wie JDS Uniphase gezeigt wird.


Charttechnik:
Die Aktie sollte heute gekauft werden, da mit einem weiteren Abrutschen wohl nicht mehr zu rechnen ist. Eventuelles Tagestief(200-Tage-Durchschnitt) im Bereich 60-63$ kann zum Aufbauen der Positionen genutzt werden, obwohl die hohen Umsätze in den letzten Tagen zugegebenermaßen nicht gerade einen Kauf signalisieren.

Nortel scores $155 million optical deal with Savvis

TORONTO, Sept 13 (Reuters) - Nortel Networks Corp. <NT.N><NT.TO>, the world`s No. 2 network equipment supplier, said on Wednesday it will supply fiber-optic products to Savvis Communications Corp. <SVVS.O> in a deal worth an estimated $155 million.

Under the 42-month arrangement, Nortel will supply its long-haul network equipment to Savvis, which is building an optical network to connect 50 Canadian and U.S. markets.

Brampton, Ontario-based Nortel will also supply professional services such as program management, engineering and equipment installation, and assistance in building a network operations center.

Savvis, which provides data networking services to businesses, is currently a Nortel customer, using its broadband services technology throughout its global network.

Herndon, Virginia-based Savvis said on Tuesday it would build its own fiber-optic network, to be in place by the fourth quarter of 2001, to replace the lines it leases from other services providers. Level 3 Communications Inc. <LVLT.O> will supply Savvis with 20,0000 route miles of fiber in a deal valued at C$135 million over a 20-year term, Level 3 said on Wednesday.

Der Netzwerk-Spezialist verzeichne eine deutliche Zunahmen der Auftragseingänge für Investitionen für UMTS-Technik, wobei man eine Auftrag der spanischen Airtel erhalten habe. Darüber hinaus rechnen die Wertpapierexperten mit einem weiteren positiven news-flow.
