Apple Warns of Disappointing
Sales, Loss
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Apple Computer Inc.
(NasdaqNM:AAPL - news) warned on Tuesday that it
would post its first quarterly operating loss in three years
as sales fell far short of expectations, becoming the
second major personal computer maker to warn that
holiday sales were slow.
``The swift industry-wide decline in PC sales will result in
Apple`s first non-profitable quarter in three years,`` Chief
Executive Steve Jobs (news - web sites) said in a
statement.
Sharply cutting already reduced expectations, Apple said it expected to post
revenue of about $1 billion and a net loss, excluding investment gains, of between
$225 million and $250 million, when it reports actual first fiscal quarter results on
Jan. 17.
Analysts had expected the company to post revenues of about $1.6 billion and a
profit of 3 cents a share, according to First Call/Thomson Financial.
The warning from Apple followed one last week from Gateway Inc. (NYSE:GTW -
news) , which said its fourth quarter sales and profits would fall far short of Wall
Street estimates due to slack holiday sales.
Citing lower-than-expected personal computer sales and discount pricing, Apple
said it expected fiscal 2001 revenues at $6 billion to $6.5 billion.
``It has become increasingly apparent that the market for personal computers has
slowed well beyond our earlier expectations,`` Apple`s Chief Financial Officer Fred
Anderson said on a conference call.
When it reported its fourth quarter earnings in October, Apple reduced revenue
estimates for the first quarter ending in December to about $1.6 billion, and was
targeting a ``slight profit.`` Before the October warning, analysts had been expecting
a first quarter profit of 45 cents a share.
The company already had cut its revenue target in October for the fiscal year 2001
to the $7.5 billion to $8 billion range, compared with analyst estimates of $8.97
billion.
``It`s qualitatively not a surprise, because Apple has the most exposure to consumer
retail. But the expected revenue base was already taken down sharply, so cutting
that by another 1/2 billion is pretty dramatic. The size of the adjustment is a
surprise,.`` said SG Cowen analyst Richard Chu.

Apple`s CD-RW strategy
By xYankee (xyankee@appleinsider.com)
December 05, 2000
Earlier today, Apple issued an earnings warning for its first fiscal
quarter of 2001. The company announced that it would lose
between $200-$250 million as a result of depressed demand and a
lagging economy. Like last quarter, CEO Steve Jobs participated in a
conference call an, in an effort to control the damage, revealed far
more information than sources say he wanted to.
During the conference call, Jobs noted Apple`s lack of CD-RW
offerings in its products. "We totally missed the boat," he said,
further explaining that more than half of Compaq`s systems ship
with the CD-RW drives.
Instead of CD-RW drives, what Apple has been offering on its
systems for the last year have been DVD drives, with DVD-RAM
drives on some high-end configuration.
According to sources, Apple anticipated that the demand for DVD,
both movies as well as software that used the media, would
outpace the demand for CD-RW. As a result, Apple chose to include
DVD drives in its never-ending attempt to stay ahead of the curve.
The plan completely backfired.
After months of pondering how to handle the situation, Apple faced
the fact that it simply wouldn`t be able to ignore the CD-RW
revolution.
Sources confirm that Apple is the mystery company that purchased
Radialogic`s Storage Master and CD Master products today. CD
Master, a new CD authoring application, boasts such exclusive
features as asynchronous burning, which allows CDs to burned in
the background.
In April, Apple purchased all of ASTARTE`s DVD authoring
applications, anticipating that DVD-RAM would be the next wave.
Sources say Apple engineers are now working around the clock to
finish work on its own DVD/CD recording software in time for
Macworld, which will use the core technology found in CD Master,
but feature an Apple-like interface and ease of use.
At Macworld, Apple will introduce a new line of Power Mac G4
systems, all of which will be available with CD-RW models. Rumor
has it that middle- and high-end models are expected to ship with
DVD/CD-RW combo drives, while the low-end model is still expected
to ship with a DVD drive, which can be upgraded to a DVD/CD-RW
combo drive at the Apple Store.
DVD-RAM is expected to become a BTO-only option at the Apple
Store, and Apple may give users the options of including both a
DVD/CD-RW and DVD-RAM drive in the same Mac, sources say.
Apple is also rumored to be looking at including DVD/CD-RW combo
drives in the iMac DV Special Edition, although information regarding
a revamped iMac at Macworld remains slim and inconsistent.
Either way, Apple is trying to make up for lost time in a big way by
being the first computer maker to ship DVD/CD-RW combo drives
on a number of its systems, and at price points previously unheard
of. Whether this will be enough to cover up the company`s blunder
for the last year remains to be seen.
