Motorola and Molecular Staging Inc. Form Alliance to Develop Bioarrays; Companies to Jointly Research and Develop DNA, RNA and Protein Bioarrays
NORTHBROOK, Ill. and NEW HAVEN, Conn., Dec. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT <http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=mot&d=t> - news </n/m/mot.html>;) and Molecular Staging Inc. (MSI), announced the formation of a broad alliance under which MSI and Motorola`s Life Sciences unit will collaborate in the development of highly sensitive bioarrays for use in Motorola`s Life Sciences business.
Under the agreement, Motorola will couple its proprietary CodeLink(TM) Bioarray technology with MSI`s proprietary Rolling Circle Amplification Technology (RCATTM). The combination of these technologies may be used by Motorola to further their development of bioarrays, which will ultimately help scientists study the relationship between genes and disease.
As agreed, Motorola will pay a licensing fee and make a series of equity investments in MSI, with an option to increase its equity stake in the future. Motorola will have exclusive rights to RCATTM in the diagnostic field for nucleic-acid bioarrays. Additional terms were not disclosed.
Research on the function of genes and the sequence of the human genome has yielded a massive amount of knowledge that may ultimately help improve health through real-time diagnosis and early treatment of many types of illnesses. Motorola Life Sciences will play a pivotal role in addressing this opportunity.
``We believe that RCATTM fits extraordinarily well with Motorola`s plan to build a long-term, sustainable leadership position in bioarrays, and to leverage our expertise in electronics, miniaturization, and physical chemistry. RCATTM will allow us to make a strong leap forward in the technology that we offer to genetic researchers,`` said Nicholas Naclerio, vice president and general manager of Motorola`s Biochip Systems business.
According to Chuck Brush, director of research at Biochip Systems, RCATTM has the potential to reduce costs and increase laboratory throughput by eliminating the need for allele-specific amplification of individual samples of DNA. ``Increased sensitivity through signal amplification could allow direct analysis of genomic DNA,`` said Brush.
``Bioarrays will revolutionize how we think about the diagnosis and treatment of disease, and it`s very gratifying that MSI`s technology, when coupled with Motorola`s expertise, will provide health care professionals with the tools needed to truly impact people`s health and well-being,`` said Stephen Kingsmore, M.D., COO of MSI. Torben Christensen, MSI`s CEO, added, ``It`s great to have the opportunity to work with a world leader like Motorola. Their decision to invest in MSI is a clear indication that RCAT(TM) can play an integral role in the development of products that fully leverage discoveries arising out of the genomics revolution.``

U.S. Army Awards $22.3 Million Contract to Motorola for Three Dimensional Air-Ground Battlespace Management
Continued development and production of 53 additional Tactical Airspace Integration Systems could top $150 million over five years
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 19, 2000-- Motorola officials Tuesday announced the U.S. Army has awarded the company a full rate production contract to continue fielding Tactical Air Space Integration Systems (TAIS).
The total value of the contract with all options and quantities exercised is $150 million to field up to 53 systems over a five-year period. The initial award is $22.3 million.
TAIS is the most advanced mobile, airspace management system in the Department of Defense (DoD) providing integrated air-ground battlespace management based on joint service and information system inputs.
Under previous contracts for the Army`s PM Air Traffic Control, Motorola provided the initial TAIS prototype and the first three production systems making TAIS the Army`s first digitized airspace management system to be fielded.
``TAIS is a giant leap forward,`` said Lt. Col. Cory Mahanna, product manager for Air Traffic Control. ``Now the Army has a very valuable and useful digitization tool to aid the commander and his staff in obtaining real time situational awareness of the battlefield airspace. This capability enables more effective and efficient visualization.
``But most importantly it permits the commander to more safely utilize the airspace.``
Once integrated, TAIS is equipped with an extensive suite of communications and computing systems that receive input from multiple sources providing total battlefield situation awareness and allows commanders and staff to communicate directly with various users of airspace.
``Motorola has been working closely with the Army for some time to fulfill its new transformation force vision. The contract represents another milestone for our business and marks the culmination of our efforts to provide world class system solutions in this competitive environment.
``It allows the Army to take advantage of previous investments in hardware, software and Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) products,`` said Mark Fried, corporate vice president and general manager of Motorola`s Integrated Information Systems Group. ``Motorola and the U.S. Army went from concept to design to fielding the first TAIS in less than four years which is a tribute to reuse and leveraging commercial products.``
TAIS meets the level 6 compliant system requirement of the DoD for a Defense Information Infrastructure Common Operating Environment (DII COE). In an operational scenario, TAIS functions in pairs. One TAIS vehicle, equipped with networked computers, is located with an Army Division or CORPS as part of an Army Tactical Operations Center (TOC).
The other TAIS vehicle, identical in form, fit and function, can be located elsewhere to perform Air Traffic Services.
The TAIS system, which fully integrates with other ABCS systems, uses the Dynamic Airspace Management System DAMS® of Virginia-based Raytheon Systems Co. and the Air Defense System Integrator (ADSI) developed by Advanced Programming Concepts based in Austin, Texas. Other key partners include Huntsville, Ala.-based Dynetics Inc., COLSA Inc. and Quality Research Inc.

      Motorola Gewinne laufen lassen
      M.M.Warburg & CO

      @Motorola mit CMOS-Bildsensor
