Auction of Peru's Michiquillay copper-gold-silver deposit pushed back to Apr 30
      Source: BNamericas
Peru's state agency for the promotion of private investment ProInversion has released the new timetable for the auction of the Michiquillay copper-gold-silver deposit in Cajamarca department.

The auction, previously set for February 28, will now come to a head on April 30, while the start date for site visits is still up in the air, ProInversion said in a statement.

The contract is scheduled to be signed by May 30.

ProInversion will publish a base price for the project on March 30 and the period of due diligence will last through March 16.

More than 15 parties are interested in acquiring Michiquillay, Peru's energy and mines minister Juan Valdivia said in early January.

Canadian Vena Resources (TSX-V, BVL: VEM) plans on making a bid with an undisclosed partner, company CEO Juan Vegarra told BNamericas in a recent interview, while China's Zijin has also been reported to be interested in Michiquillay. This week, Zijin made a bid to acquire London's Monterrico Metals (LSE: MNA), which has the Rio Blanco copper project in nearby Piura department.

The Michiquillay bidding rules require participating companies to have minimum treatment capacity of 10,000t/d and a net patrimony of US$100mn.

The project has 544Mt of reserves grading 0.69% copper, 0.1g/t-0.5g/t gold and 2g/t-4g/t silver using a cutoff of 0.4% copper, according to ProInversion figures.

Zambia's 2006 copper output jumps 7% on year, cobalt production down
      Source: Hoovers

Zambia's 2006 copper output increased by 7.1% compared with the previous year, due to increased investments in the sector spurred by a recovery in world copper prices on the international market, the Ministry of Finance said Monday.

Copper output in 2006 was 492,016 metric tons, up from 459,324 tons produced in 2005, the report said.

"The mining sector continued to perform well in 2006. Preliminary estimates indicate that real gross domestic product growth in the mining and quarrying sector increased to 11.8% from 7.9% in 2005. This was largely on account of the rise in mineral production" Ngandu Magande, the Zambian finance minster said in a report presented to the national Assembly Friday.

Cobalt production, however, fell to 4,658 tons in 2006 from 5,537 tons in 2005, – a drop attributed to companies' reduced interest in producing the metal due to unfavorable world prices.

Copper output fell below the earlier forecast of 530,000 tons due to operational problems faced by the country's two leading copper produces, Mopani Copper Mines, or MCM, and Konkola Copper Mines, or KCM, late in 2005, according to Fredrick Bantumbuze, the director of the Zambian Chamber of Mines. The major problem was the fuel crisis which forced KCM to halve daily output at Nkana smelter and MCM closed its Mufulira smelter for over a month late 2005.

Copper and cobalt mining are the life blood of the Zambian economy. The copper mining sector witnessed increased investments since 2002, and according to data from the Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development, up to $2 billion has been invested in the sector since 2002.

The country's 2007 copper output is projected to be 600,000 tons and it is expected to reach more than 700,000 tons next year when Equinox's Lumwana mine comes into production, the Chamber of Mines said.

DJN/DJG/bdz/27.2.2007

Sherwood Closes C$40 Million Convertible Debenture Financing and Debentures Commence Trading on the TSX Venture Exchange

Proceeds to Complete Development of Minto Mine, Accelerate Phase 2 Expansion & Exploration

      VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(CCNMatthews - Feb. 28, 2007) -

NOT FOR DISTRIBUTION TO U.S. NEWS WIRE SERVICES OR DISSEMINATION IN THE UNITED STATES.

Sherwood Copper Corporation (TSX VENTURE:SWC) is pleased to announce that, further to its news release of February 8, 2007, it has completed the C$40 million convertible debenture financing led by BMO Capital Markets. In addition, effective today, 40,000 convertible debentures are eligible to commence trading on the TSX Venture Exchange under the symbol SWC.DB.

The net proceeds of the offering will be used to complete the development of Sherwood's high-grade Minto copper-gold project in the Yukon Territory, as well as the acceleration of the Phase 2 expansion to 2,400 metric tpd, ahead of the previous schedule, continue the aggressive exploration of the Minto property for additional high grade reserves, and for general corporate purposes. Sherwood also intends to not draw on the C$20 million subordinated debt facility arranged with Macquarie Bank that was announced October 17, 2006, reducing the level of bank debt and, as a result, Sherwood will not issue the 2,359,459 warrants that would have been issued in relation to that facility.

A syndicate of underwriters led by BMO Capital Markets purchased, on a bought deal basis, C$40 million aggregate principal amount of convertible senior unsecured debentures due March 31, 2012. The convertible debentures will bear interest at a rate of 5.0% per annum payable semi-annually and will be convertible at the option of the holder into common shares of Sherwood Copper at a conversion rate of C$6.30 per common share. The underwriters have an over-allotment option to purchase additional convertible debentures representing 15% of the purchased debentures at the same price, exercisable for a period of 30 days from this closing. Any proceeds raised from the exercise of the over-allotment option will also be available to reduce bank debt.

The securities offered have not been registered under the U.S. Securities Act of 1933, as amended, and may not be offered or sold in the United States absent registration or an applicable exemption from the registration requirements. This press release shall not constitute an offer to sell or the solicitation of an offer to buy nor shall there be any sale of the securities in any State in which such offer, solicitation or sale would be unlawful.

      Minto Project

The Minto Project is a high-grade copper-gold deposit located in the Yukon Territory, Canada. As announced August 28, 2006, the feasibility study indicates production averaging 41 million pounds of copper and 17,295oz of gold per year at cash costs of US$0.57 per pound over the first six years of operations. Mine construction is substantially advanced and Construction Manager JDS Energy & Mining is supervising development activities, with Hatch Ltd. providing engineering and procurement services. Clark Builders has been retained as general contractors and is constructing the process and related facilities. Pelly Construction is completing the contract mining and numerous other contractors have been engaged for specialized areas of activities. Development activities at the Minto Project are proceeding rapidly and production is forecast mid-2007, with an accelerated schedule targeting start up in Q2, 2007. Project financing and forward sales agreements for a significant portion of the first four years of production were announced October 26, 2006.

      Sherwood Copper

Sherwood's successful consolidation of the ownership of the Minto Project provides a unique investment opportunity - participation in an already permitted, partially constructed, high-grade, open pit copper-gold project located in Canada with developed infrastructure and substantial exploration potential within the current property.
