Hong Kong, April 24 (Bloomberg) -- Tom.com Ltd., an Internet site controlled by tycoon Li Ka-shing, and Softbank Investment International (Strategic) Ltd., a unit of Japan and Asia`s biggest Internet investor, plan to invest jointly in a talent-search Web site that would let Asian musicians audition for record contracts online, the South China Morning Post said, citing unnamed sources. Other investors include Tetsuya Komuro, a producer with Japanese record label avex tracks, and Ye Xuanping, vice chairman of the Chinese People`s Political Consultative Conference. The paper said the most significant aspect of the deal may be the involvement of Ye, a former governor of prosperous Guangdong province, since it demonstrates the extent of Li`s and Softbank`s official connections in China.

tom.com<8001.HK>, Softbank to team up on Web-paper
HONG KONG, April 24 (Reuters) - Tom.com Ltd, a senior Chinese official, a Softbank Corp <9984.T> unit and a prominent Japanese music producer Tetsuya Komuro are set to invest in an online talent-search Web site, the South China Morning Post said. The site would invite musicians throughout Asia to audition over the Internet and perhaps land a recording deal, the Hong Kong newspaper on Monday quoted unidentified sources as saying.
It said Softbank Investment International (Strategic) and Ye Xuanping, vice-chairman of the Chinese People`s Political Consultative Conference, a China parliamentary body, will be investing alongside tom.com and Komuro.
Komuro is expected to have a major stake and run the site`s operations, the newspaper reported.
Tom.com is the China-focused Internet portal of Cheung Kong (Holdings) Ltd <0001.HK> and Hutchison Whampoa Ltd <0013.HK>, controlled by local tycoon Li Ka-shing.
But the daily added the joint venture may take some time to materialise.
It quoted a source as saying the parties had failed to sign a deal last week as Hutchison officials, representing tom.com, had disagreed with some of the terms. Officials from tom.com and Softbank in Hong Kong were not available to comment.
The newspaper said the joint venture is expected to provide an additional revenue stream for tom.com, but more significantly it will demonstrate the extent of Hutchison and Softbank International`s official connections in China. Official support is a vital factor for making inroads into the mainland`s Internet and electronic commerce sector, it noted. The deal would also signify the warming of relations between softbank and the Li family, the Post said. Last month, Softbank Corp chief financial officer Yoshitaka Kitao said in Hong Kong that he disagreed with the working style of Li Ka-shing`s younger son Richard Li. Kitao said he would not have any cooperation or future ties with Richarad Li. However, a representative of Softbank`s public relations agency in Hong Kong later said Kitao did not intend to disparage Li and that Softbank would welcome business cooperation with his Pacific Century CyberWorks Ltd <1186.HK>, a Hong Kong-based Internet firm.
