AltaVista`s Search Popularity Nearly Doubles in the Past 15 Months

Web Portal`s Search Referral Percentage Climbs More Than 80%, According to WebSideStory`s StatMarket

SAN DIEGO, July 11 /PRNewswire/ -- WebSideStory, Inc. (www.websidestory.com), a provider of real-time Internet intelligence and Web audience analysis, today reported that AltaVista`s global search referral percentage -- the amount of Web traffic worldwide it refers, or directs, to other sites -- has nearly doubled in the past 15 months, from 9.04% on April 5, 1999 to 16.56% on July 4, 2000. During that span, AltaVista, a CMGI company (Nasdaq: CMGI - news), passed Excite and now ranks second only to Yahoo! as the most popular referring search engine, according to WebSideStory`s StatMarket.

StatMarket (www.statmarket.com) is an Internet intelligence service that gathers and reports data on global Internet user trends. StatMarket`s statistics are collected from millions of visitors a day to tens of thousands of Web sites worldwide using WebSideStory`s HitBox Enterprise (www.hitboxenterprise.com) and other HitBox Web audience analysis services. StatMarket`s information is gathered in real-time and reported daily.

AltaVista`s search referral percentage climbed slowly from April 1999 to January of this year. It then shot up from just over 11% to its current level, according to StatMarket.

``Although Yahoo! is still number one, AltaVista is firmly entrenched as the second most popular referring search engine,`` said Geoff Johnston, vice president of product marketing for StatMarket. ``With its recent increase, AltaVista now nearly triples the search referral percentage of its nearest competitor.``

Compaq and CMGI Team in Venture to Address Expanding Business-to-Employee (B2E) Market; Online Insurance Industry Veteran to Head New B2E Company Delivering Web-Based Solutions

HOUSTON and ANDOVER, Mass., July 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ - news) and CMGI, Inc. (Nasdaq: CMGI - news) today announced the creation of a new joint venture company that will provide Internet-based, best-in-class products, services and information for a range of vertical employee groups; and announced the appointment of Mia Shernoff as Chief Executive Officer. Named Freeup LLC, the company expects to launch a business-to-employee (B2E) web destination called Freeup.com(TM) later this year. Freeup.com will aggregate information and tools into task-specific subject areas designed to help employees simplify work processes and increase productivity.

Initial funding from the parent companies is expected to total approximately $20 million. Compaq, through a wholly-owned subsidiary, owns a controlling interest in Freeup, while CMGI holds the remaining stake. Freeup expects to derive revenues through a combination of subscriptions, advertising and sales of goods and services. Shernoff will report to a five-person governing board of managers that will include three Compaq-appointed and two CMGI-appointed members.

``Our investment in Freeup again delivers on Compaq`s strategy to lead the industry in Internet products and services,`` said Michael Capellas, Compaq President and Chief Executive Officer. ``A stand-alone enterprise, Freeup will be a high-energy, fast-moving company focused on bringing substantive value to employee communities. Providing one-stop, relevant and up-to-the-minute Internet-based content, Freeup will give employees the freedom to focus on professional and personal excellence,`` Capellas added.

CMGI Chairman and CEO David Wetherell said, ``We see this venture with Compaq as an alliance that builds upon our shared belief in the significance of Internet-based business-to-employee support. Freeup will offer employee groups the ability to access productivity-enhancing products and solutions quickly and easily within a single web destination.

``This venture also illustrates the continuing expansion of our strategic relationship with Compaq,`` added Wetherell, ``and is expected to create a dynamic new revenue stream for the CMGI-affiliated products and services we will bring to the company.``

Shernoff joins Freeup from Aon Corporation where she was Executive Vice President and Managing Director of the firm`s e-business services portfolio. A specialist in creating and implementing new business strategies, Shernoff has launched numerous successful products and services in the insurance and financial industries, and has consistently led businesses in exceeding performance expectations.

Freeup.com expects to leverage Compaq`s Internet technology and leadership in the worldwide PC market and CMGI`s Internet expertise to provide 24x7 web access to products and services from a diverse group of alliances and content providers including Intel Corporation (Nasdaq: INTC - news) Microsoft Corporation (Nasdaq: MSFT - news), CNET Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq: CNET - news), Commerce One (Nasdaq: CMRC - news), DigitalThink (Nasdaq: DTHK - news) and Intraware (Nasdaq: ITRA - news). Freeup also intends to utilize technology support from various CMGI network companies, including web and applications services hosting from NaviSite (Nasdaq: NAVI - news); web strategy, development and integration services from CMGI Solutions and ad serving and campaign management services from Engage (Nasdaq: ENGA - news), among others. Initial site content is expected to target the information technology employee community, while subsequent content will target additional employee segments.
