Das US-Unternehmen OmniSky Corporation wagte im September den Gang an die Nasdaq. Die Gesellschaft ist ein Vorreiter im Wachstumsmarkt der drahtlosen Kommunikation. Dabei sorgt OmniSky in den Vereinigten Staaten für einen stetigen Anschluss von mobilen Informationsuchenden an das Internet. OmniSky bietet mit dem Mistrel V ein Modem an, durch das der Palm V Organizer einen Internetzugang herstellen kann. Auch weitere Zusatzdienstleistungen wie E-Commerce-Transaktionen oder E-mail-Service werden für den Kunden bereitgestellt. Darüber hinaus bietet OmniSky auch ein eigenes „Wireless Internet Portal“ an, über das mit Hilfe der Handhelds personalisierte Inhalte abgerufen werden können. Die Technik basiert – im Gegensatz zu Europa, die auf die GSM –Technologie schwören – auf dem in Amerika landesweit eingesetzten CDPD -Standard (Cellular Digital Packet Data ).

Das Unternehmen wurde erst im letzten Jahr als Joint Venture zwischen der 3Com-Tochter Palm (27 Prozent) und dem Wireless-Spezialisten Aether Systems (31 Prozent) gegründet. Mit 12 Prozent der Papiere besitzt auch die News Corp. einen Anteil am Unternehmen. Die australische Mediengesellschaft wird das Geschäft von OmniSky außerhalb der USA leiten.
Ein weiterer wichtiger Partner von OmniSky Corporation ist der weltgrößte Internet-Service-Provider und baldige Medienriese AOL, der ebenfalls einen kleinen Anteil an OmniSky erworben hat. Aufgrund der Zusammenarbeit der potentiellen Konkurrenten erhalten die Kunden von OmniSky Zugang zu verschiedenen Features von AOL wie zum Beispiel dem Instant Messaging.
Darüber hinaus wird die Partnerschaft durch eine Marketing-Allianz ergänzt. Mit diesem Deal vergrößert AOL seinen Einflussbereich im Wireless-Sektor , nachdem der Internetprimus bereits im Juli eine großangelegte Kooperation mit AT&T Wireless abgeschlossen hat. Dabei zielte AOL vor allem auf die 12,5 Millionen Handybenutzer der AT&T-Mobilfunktochter. OmniSky dürfte daher hervorragend zu der Strategie von AOL passen,da sich das Wireless-Portal bislang auf den mobilen Handheld-Markt konzentrierte. Doch schon für die nahe Zukunft ist eine Ausweitung des Service auf Microsoft-CE-Geräte sowie auf WAP-fähige Handys geplant. Ob sich AOL dann für AT&T Wireless oder OmniSky entscheiden wird oder beide Allianzen weiter verfolgt werden, bleibt abzuwarten.

Obwohl die Firma aus Kalifornien mit Go-America und Research In Motion bereits zwei börsennotierte Gesellschaften als Wettbewerber zwar nicht zu fürchten, aber dennoch zu beachten hat, ist das Unternehmen nicht zu spät dran, um vom künftigen Aufschwung zu profitieren. Die Hauptaspekte für den zukünftigen Erfolg des Unternehmens dürften neben den beschriebenen Wachstumschancen des Marktes vor allem die hochkarätigen Partnerschaften sein. Mit AOL, Palm(beziehungsweise 3Com), Aether Systems sowie der News Corp. hat man Partner im Boot sitzen, die ein starkes Interesse daran haben, dass das Geschäft von OmniSky erfolgreich wird.

Das Unternehmen ist in einem fulminanten wachsenden Markt tätig. Da Amerika den Europäern und Japanern in der mobilen Kommunikation etwas hinterherhinkt, dürfte die Aufholjagd in der Neuen Welt zu einem explosiven Wachstum führen. OmniSky wird sich rechtzeitig vor diesem Boom positioniert haben und seine vielfältigen Dienstleistungen einem breiten Publikum anbieten können.
