About Beacon Power`s Flywheel Energy Storage Systems

Beacon`s flywheel energy storage systems provide highly reliable power via a composite flywheel rotating on near-frictionless magnetic bearings within a vacuum chamber. When primary power is lost, the flywheel`s stored mechanical energy is instantly and automatically converted into reliable electrical power, allowing operations to continue without interruption. The 20C1000 product, designed specifically for the telecommunications and broadband cable industries, provides up to 1 kilowatt of continuous electrical power and, at various power levels, is capable of supporting user operations for up to ten hours.

Beacon`s FESS offers a number of benefits when compared to conventional lead-acid battery systems, including highly reliable, maintenance-free performance; remote monitoring to ensure certainty of operation; stable performance over a wide temperature range and through thousands of charge- discharge cycles; and more rapid recharging than conventional batteries.

Beacon Power Announces Third-Quarter Financial Results
      Expansion of Commercial Trials Continues
      Company Reorganizes Workforce, Cuts Costs
WILMINGTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 30, 2001--Beacon Power Corporation (Nasdaq: BCON - news), a leading manufacturer of flywheel energy storage systems that provide highly reliable, high-quality uninterruptible electric power, today announced its financial results for the third quarter ended September 30, 2001.

For the third quarter of 2001, Beacon Power reported a net loss of $7.6 million, or ($0.18) per share, compared with a net loss of $4.2 million in the third quarter of 2000, the latter being prior to Beacon Power`s initial public offering in November 2000. During the third quarter of 2001, Beacon invested $5.4 million in R&D, $2.3 million in SG&A and expensed depreciation of $0.3 million. As of September 30, 2001, Beacon Power had $40.9 million in cash and cash equivalents.

``We are making progress in our transition from a development-stage company to a position of industry leadership as a global producer of state-of-the-art flywheel systems,`` said Beacon Power President and Chief Executive Officer William E. Stanton. In the first three quarters we placed twelve 2kWh units into field trials. We installed the first two of our 2nd generation flywheels and electronics earlier this year at one of Verizon`s remote terminal sites. The flywheel systems are providing back up power for approximately 1,000 Verizon subscribers and are meeting their testing milestones. They represent Beacon`s final commercial-grade products, and their installation is the next step in an ongoing Verizon field trial, prior to an initial contract.``

``During our first year as a development-stage, public company, the dynamics of our market have changed considerably,`` continued Stanton. ``Given the uncertainty in the economy, companies have less incentive and ability to consider new, alternative energy technologies and testing cycles have clearly lengthened. Our long-term market remains strong even as the challenges of moving to full-scale commercial production have increased. As a result, Beacon Power has implemented a reorganization of its workforce and has reduced headcount by 26 employees or approximately 25 percent. In taking these actions to reduce our burn rate, we have continued to ensure the availability of resources to effectively perform research and product development, manufacture anticipated sales volumes, and upgrade Beacon`s sales and marketing resources and activities. With this reorganization, we are managing to have sufficient cash on hand to fund our operations for the next 24 months. Reducing our staff was a very difficult decision and we deeply appreciate the contributions all our employees, past and present, have made to launching our innovative, proven technology.``

Stanton stated, ``The telecom market today is dominated by budget considerations rather than maintaining services. In response to this shift, Beacon Power is increasing its sales and marketing efforts, with four regional sales managers to lead an aggressive, hands-on sales effort.``

      Comment on Third-quarter Operating Highlights

For the quarter, Beacon Power shipped eight 2kWh units. The Company expects to ship an additional eight units by the end of the year, for a total of 20 units for the year and 27 units cumulative. In the third quarter the Company began shipping its next generation 2kWh system that features a simplified version of the flywheel containing fewer parts, which is easier to assemble and quicker to install as well as an advanced electronics package.

Beacon Power recently announced the installation of a 2kWh flywheel system for Cox Communications. The unit will supply back-up power for telecommunications needs at Quonset Davisville, a 3,000-acre, world-class intermodal, industrial and commerce park located in North Kingstown, RI. Quonset Davisville has been designed by The Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation to meet the needs of the world`s largest companies. It has designated 850 acres for manufacturing and distribution industries, 514 acres for transportation and utilities, 40 acres for commercial and research and development office space, nine acres for a 150-room hotel and retail space and 204 acres for recreation.

Beacon Power is ahead of schedule on its 6kWh units and expects to begin shipping beta units to customers during the fourth quarter of 2001 with commercial production planned to begin in the first quarter of 2002.

      Outlook

Stanton concluded, ``We still see a large opportunity for energy flywheel systems, back-up power, distributed generation and power quality. With our on-going cost reduction programs, we expect to make significant progress in our move to commercialization of our technology.``

The Market Opportunity for Flywheel Energy Storage Systems

The digital economy has created a burgeoning demand for reliable, high-quality electric power - what some analyst`s estimate as a $12 billion market. Beacon Power initially targeted the $4 billion communications segment of this market. The company`s family of Flywheel Energy Storage Systems is designed to replace the conventional lead-acid battery systems that today supply back-up power for broadband cable and telecom networks. Like battery backup systems, Beacon Power`s flywheel technology provides uninterruptible emergency power until the primary supply of electricity is restored. But, compared to lead-acid batteries, Beacon Power`s flywheel systems offer superior reliability, are insensitive to temperature fluctuations, have a lower life-cycle cost, and do not contain toxic materials or fluids. They also last much longer than batteries, require less maintenance and can be reliably monitored remotely via modem or the Internet

Beacon Power`s Flywheel Energy System Installed by Cox Communications in Phoenix; Cox Communications Investing More Than $750 Million to Upgrade Its Network
      12/12/2001 8:33:00 AM
WILMINGTON, Mass., Dec 12, 2001 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Beacon Power Corporation (BCON), a leading manufacturer of flywheel energy storage systems that provide highly reliable, high-quality uninterruptible electric power, today announced the installation of its 2kWh flywheels for Cox Communications` Phoenix operation. Beacon Power`s flywheels will supply back-up power for the telecommunications needs of Cox Communications` business and residential customers in the Valley of the Sun where the company serves approximately 605,000 customers in 23 communities.

"Cox Communications is committed to supporting all of its services with cutting-edge technology and outstanding reliability and customer service," said Hugh McCarley, Vice President, Engineering for Cox Communications. "Beacon Power`s innovative, environmentally benign flywheel technology helps us provide reliable standby power for the communications solutions we offer our customers, including cable television, digital telephone and high-speed Internet service. Beacon Power`s back-up energy system will help ensure the reliability of our communications lines in the event of a power outage."

Cox Communications is investing more than $750 million to upgrade its network. Approximately 75 percent of the upgrade of its 12,000-mile hybrid fiber coaxial network has been completed.

"We are pleased to complete another installation of our 2 kWh flywheels in a major service territory of one of this country`s premier providers of telecommunications services to further demonstrate the performance and reliability of our technology," stated F. William Capp, president and CEO of Beacon Power. "Our flywheel energy storage systems are exceptionally well suited for the hot climate of Phoenix. This is our second installation for Cox and follows the recent delivery of our 2 kWh units to the Quonset Davisville Industrial and Commerce Park in North Kingston, Rhode Island. We believe Beacon flywheels will contribute to Cox Communications` high service standards by providing enhanced standby power reliability, performance and longevity, without scheduled maintenance for 20 years."

Beacon Power Installs Its Next Generation 6kWh Flywheel System At WinDBreak Cable
WILMINGTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 14, 2002--Beacon Power Corporation (Nasdaq: BCON - news), a leading manufacturer of flywheel energy storage systems that provide highly reliable, high-quality uninterruptible electric power, today announced the installation of its 6kWh demonstration flywheel unit for WinDBreak Cable Company, a privately held cable company based in Nebraska. This 36-volt flywheel will supply back-up power for WinDBreak`s Headend, which supplies cable television and data services to the town of Lyman, Nebraska.

``We are very pleased to have one of Beacon Power`s 6 kWh demonstration units installed on WinDBreak Cable`s system. We believe in their technology,`` said William D. (Bill) Bauer, president and CEO of WinDBreak. ``Three years ago, WinDBreak Cable provided the first test site for an experimental Beacon Power flywheel. Since then, we have worked with their engineers to enhance their units. Our temperature extremes can range from over 100 degrees Fahrenheit on a summer day to prolonged winter temperatures as low as 10 to 15 degrees Fahrenheit below zero. A major benefit of the Beacon Power flywheel technology is its reliability under extreme conditions like these. In addition, flywheels eliminate the expensive and time-consuming maintenance required by battery backup systems. Flywheels should last for decades, not just years.`` WinDBreak Cable uses the Beacon Power flywheel energy storage systems to ensure steady, uninterrupted electric power for cable TV and high speed Internet services for its customers.

WILMINGTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 13, 2002--Beacon Power Corporation (Nasdaq: BCON), a development stage company that designs, develops, configures, and offers for sale power systems that provide highly reliable, high-quality, uninterruptible electric power, today announced its financial results for the third quarter ended September 30, 2002.

For the third quarter of 2002, Beacon Power reported a net loss of $9.2 million, or ($0.21) per share, as compared to a net loss of $7.6 million, or ($0.18) per share in the third quarter of 2001. In the third quarter of 2002, the company spent $1.3 million in R&D, $1.1 million in SG&A and had depreciation costs of $.5 million. As a result of the overall economic downturn and in particular the significant decline in capital and maintenance spending in telcom, the Company as required by Statement of Financial Accounting Standards No. 144 "Accounting for the Impairment or Disposal of Long-Lived Assets" has evaluated its property and equipment. The Company has determined that a significant portion of its facility and equipment are underutilized and are unlikely to have future economic value to the Company. Based on this evaluation, a non-cash impairment charge of $6.5 million composed of long-lived asset impairment charges of $4.3 million, and net-restructuring charges of $2.2 million has been recorded.

"We continue to focus on the need to conserve cash, our current cash position is $21.8 million which at our reduced cash burn rate will be sufficient to fund operations for the next 24 months while we continue necessary product development and operational goals, such as UL approval of our electronics. At the same time, we continue to explore larger scale high-power and high-energy system opportunities for our products in the power distribution industry. As the leading composite flywheel organization, we believe we are positioned to offer customers and partners high-performance power quality and stored energy solutions based on environmentally friendly, sustainable technology," said Bill Capp, Beacon Power CEO and President.
