Bullish 2000 industry view
By Stephanie O`Brien, CBS MarketWatch
Last Update: 5:33 PM ET Jan 3, 2000
NewsWatch
NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- Shares of several biotech companies rose
Monday, with bullish talk about stocks such as Incyte Pharmaceuticals
headlining the rush into the sector.
Deutsche Banc Alex. Brown analyst Kevin Tang
raised price targets for a handful of stocks, citing a
positive outlook for the companies in 2000.
"There`s a growing opinion, which I share, that the
rally that`s been longstanding in technology stocks
will begin to spill over into the biotech sector," Tang
said in an interview.
That rally is still in its early stages, Tang said. "The stocks we`ve mentioned
have arguably among the best fundamentals. That`s why we`ve highlighted
them in this market dynamic," the analyst said. "All these names have big
catalyst events," in the coming months, Tang said.
Incyte Pharmaceuticals (INCY: news, msgs) jumped 29 21/32, or nearly 50
percent, to 89 21/32. Shares of United Therapeutics (UTHR: news, msgs)
rose 7 1/8 or about 15.5 percent to 53 1/8, Trimeris stock (TRMS: news,
msgs) was up 3 5/8, or about 10 percent, to 27 1/4; QLT Phototherapeutics
(QLTI: news, msgs) rose 2 15/16 to 61 11/16.
Shares of Neurocrine (NBIX: news, msgs) rose 3/8 to 25 1/2.
Aurora Biosciences (ABSC: news, msgs) fell 1 1/2 to 25. Pharmacopeia
(PCOP: news, msgs) also slipped 1/2 to 22 1/8.
Raising targets
Among the bigger movers, Tang raised his target for
Incyte, which provides databases of genetic
information that are used in the drug discovery
process. The new 12-month target is $157 a share,
up from $47 a share previously.
Tang said the company appears close to signing a
number of new deals with other pharmaceuticals and
biotech companies. He said he also expects revenue
to have grown 15 percent in the fourth quarter, and
he sees growth of 17 percent in 2000.
Tang raised his 12-month price target for United
Therapeutics to $80 from $52. Tang said the
company`s pulmonary hypertension drug UT-15,
which is in Phase III trials, could have sales of as
much as $250 to $500 million if approved by the
FDA. That approval could occur in the first quarter
of 2000, he said.
Tang also raised his price target for Trimeris, which
works on drugs that prevent viruses from fusing to a
host cell. The company`s lead product, T-20, which
it`s developing with Roche, is in Phase II clinical
trials to test its ability to inhibit fusion of HIV with human cells. The new
target is $50, up from $38 a share.
Tang said an update on the progress T-20 and another HIV fighter, T-1249,
is expected later this month at the Conference on Retroviruses and
Opportunistic Infections. He estimates the drugs have sales potential of
more than $500 million each in the U.S. alone.
The anlayst also said he likes Amgen (AMGN: news, msgs), which was up
4 1/8 or about 7 percent, to 64 3/16. The stock is relatively undervalued,
compared to the high prices of some peers such as Genentech (DNA:
news, msgs) and Idec Pharmaceuticals (IDPH: news, msgs), which have
had big runs, he said.

PALO ALTO, Calif. and HOUSTON, Jan. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Incyte Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Nasdaq: INCY, news, msgs), a leading provider of genomic information, and Amphioxus Cell Technologies, Inc., a leader in liver biology, announced today that Incyte has been granted exclusive access to Amphioxus` unique, patented C3A cloned human liver cell line for the creation of gene expression databases, and a co-marketing arrangement for the distribution and licensing of the cell line. Financial terms were not disclosed.
"Understanding the molecular effects of drugs on the liver system is a key goal within our LifeExpress expression program," said Randy Scott, Ph.D., President and Chief Scientific Officer of Incyte. "The unique properties of the C3A cell line make it an excellent system for studying drug toxicology. The Master Cell Bank that Amphioxus has created will aid us in the creation of expression information because it will allow us to easily replicate experiments and consistently produce reliable results."
C3A is a unique cloned liver cell line that simulates normal human liver responses to stimuli, including drugs and stress. These responses include the expression of human liver enzymes involved in drug metabolism, such as cytochrome P450s, as well as other genes involved in liver function such as cell growth and energy utilization. Every cell in the C3A population is genetically identical, allowing scientists to reliably duplicate experiments, which is essential in creating gene expression databases. Using C3A cells, which are stored in a Master Cell Bank, scientists can screen for drug metabolism and toxicity by measuring gene expression.
"This is an outstanding opportunity for both companies," said Jim Kelly, Ph.D., President of Amphioxus. "The liver is the most important organ in drug metabolism and is frequently the target of drug toxicity. This collaboration will allow researchers to examine the molecular basis of drug metabolism and toxicity. They will then be able to design better compounds and test them in cell culture before they are tried in people. In addition, the combination of the Amphioxus cell line and the Incyte database is helping to confirm new drug targets in areas like diabetes, obesity, lipid metabolism, and cancer."
LifeExpress(TM), Incyte`s expression database, is the first commercially available gene expression database to combine both gene and protein expression data. Expression data from human and animal model systems are combined to provide researchers with an understanding of gene function in disease and drug metabolism. The LifeExpress product suite consists of two databases. The TargetExpress(TM) database aids researchers in target discovery, helping them to better identify potential drug targets while the LeadExpress(TM) database enables researchers to optimize the best drug candidates for development.

immer sehr gut gefahren bin. muss euch schon loben, denn eure postings

Ciao, SeRo
halbe Ewigkeit dauern wuerde.
Danke fuer eure Auskuenfte.

Also Ruhe bewahren.
