With their company`s stocks and bonds sinking again, executives at the Calpine Corporation conducted a marathon conference call with investors yesterday, hoping to reassure them about the company`s financial strength and future profits. But even as management answered questions from 55 analysts and investors during the three-and-a-quarter-hour call, Calpine securities continued to decline, closing near their lows for the day.
Calpine, the nation`s largest independent power producer, also used the call to warn investors that the unusually warm weather in the United States had contributed to a decline in power sales. As a result, the company said it would take a hard look at the profit forecasts management had made for 2002. Ann Curtis, Calpine`s chief financial officer, also declined to confirm analysts` forecasts for the company`s earnings in the fourth quarter.
Investors, accustomed to outsized earnings growth from Calpine in recent years, stampeded out of the stock, which lost 13 percent of its value yesterday, closing at $15.50 a share. Some 33 million shares changed hands on the New York Stock Exchange, more than six times the typical daily volume this year. In the last two days, the stock has fallen more than 27 percent, shedding $1.7 billion in market value.
In recent weeks, investors have grown wary of prospects for companies in the energy and energy-trading businesses. What began as investor concern over the impact that falling energy prices would have on earnings has shifted to fears of what might happen to these companies if their access to the capital markets dries up. Enron`s spectacular failure, which began last month and ended in a bankruptcy filing on Dec. 2, has fed these fears.
Calpine`s conference call, its second in two days with rattled investors, was dominated by questions from analysts and investors in the fixed-income community, like bond fund managers and bond analysts.
Analysts seemed especially concerned about the company`s $1 billion in zero-coupon bonds, issued in April, which the company may have to pay off in April 2002 if its holders exercise their right to receive their investment back. The company said that it had adequate assets to retire this debt but also noted that it was allowed to satisfy the holders by issuing them $1 billion in common stock. But such an issue would be viewed coolly by existing shareholders, who would see their stake in the company diminish significantly.
"Absent the Enron circumstance, you would not have people nearly as frazzled" about Calpine, said Kit Konolige, an electric power analyst at Morgan Stanley, who downgraded the company in a note to investors.
One of Calpine`s biggest problems with investors is how it is going to pay for its aggressive construction plan, in which it hopes to bring its megawatt-hour production from 11,000 to almost 30,000 by 2003.
Calpine is not the only company hurt by investor skittishness recently. Shares of the El Paso Corporation, a natural gas company, fell 6.5 percent yesterday when it disclosed that it had secured almost $2 billion in financing from partnerships it had moved off its balance sheet but for which El Paso shareholders remained ultimately at risk. Off-balance-sheet debts at Enron helped lead to its collapse.
El Paso`s management said its financings were different from Enron`s. "We did it in the midst of the Enron turmoil," Ralph Eads, head of El Paso`s wholesale energy sales and production, told Bloomberg News.
And in its call with investors, Calpine detailed $2.2 billion in its own off-balance-sheet financings. These were vastly different from those that contributed to Enron`s demise, company management said, because they consist of leases on plants and joint ventures with other companies.

Ich denke da ist auch eine ganze Menge Enron Panik dabei.
DOch wird übersehen das Calpine ein ganz differentet Typ von Firma ist.
Enron ist ein Trader.
Capline ist ein Betreiber und Erzeuger von Energie .Das ist das wesentliche.Im Gegensatz zu Enron ist Calpine ine Unternehmen mit hervorragender IR.
Unangenehm ist im Moment die Abwertung von S&P in der Bonität.
Ich habe aber auf Nasdaq.com das durchgecheck und gelesen das S&P betont das trotz der Abwertung keine Zweifel bestehen das Calpine über genügend Cash verfügt um seine Prokete zu zahlen.
AUch die Analysten Meinung sind weiterhin optimistish.Das Mittel der Analysten besagt ein Kursziel von 38$
Also schaut euch mal auf ww.nasdaq.com an und bleibt ruhig.Es kommen bessere Zeiten für diese Company

Ein Jojo ist nix gegen diese Aktie. Keiner weiß, warum sie fällt, an einem Tag, wo Kaufempfehlungen ausgesprochen werden.
Und jetzt steigt sie gegen den Trennt. So richtig blick´ ich´s nicht, aber irgendwie kaufe und verkaufe ich den Call immer zur richtigen Zeit. Und da muß ich´s eigentlich auch nicht verstehen, oder?

Okay der Grund, warum es steigt, steht hier. Warum sie gefallen ist, kann ich mir nicht erklären. Allgemeine Unsicherheit ist mir ein bissl zu wenig als Erklärung.
On December 24, 2001, Calpine Corporation confirmed that the Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of California approved on December 21 an order which authorized Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) to pay all of its outstanding payables owed to Calpine Corporation`s qualifying facility (QF) affiliates for power deliveries made to PG&E during the period of December 1, 2000 through April 6, 2001. PG&E owes Calpine approximately $265 million, plus interest. The Company also announced a separate pending transaction to sell this receivable.
On January 3, 2002, Calpine Corporation announced that it has sold an additional $200 million of 4% convertible senior notes due 2006 in a private placement under Rule 144A pursuant to an exercise by the initial purchaser of its option to acquire additional convertible senior notes. These securities will be convertible into shares of Calpine common stock at a price of $18.07, which represents a 23% conversion premium on the December 19, 2001 New York Stock Exchange closing price of $14.69 per Calpine common share. The Company also announced its purchase of an additional $59 million of zero coupon convertible debentures.
On January 16, 2002, following a comprehensive review of its power plant development program, Calpine Corporation announced that it has adopted a revised capital expenditure program. As a result of the nationwide economic slowdown, the industry experienced lower industrial demand during 2001 which, along with unusually mild weather, reduced prices for power. In light of these factors, the company now anticipates that 2001 earnings--(before deduction of non-recurring merger costs in connection with the Encal Energy Ltd. pooling-of-interests transaction) and Earnings Before Interest, Tax, Depreciation and Amortization, as adjusted (EBITDA, as adjusted)--will be approximately $1.95 per share and $1.6 billion, respectively. The company is also updating its estimates for earnings per share and EBITDA, as adjusted, in 2002 to approximately $1.70 and $2 billion, respectively.

Also Calpine senkte die Gewinnerwartungen für 2001 auf 1,95$ pro Aktie und für 2002 auf 1,70$ pro Aktie und trotzdem steigt die Aktie fast 10%. Schließlich waren eigentlich 2$ bzw. 2,20$ erwartet worden.
Mmh. Da müssen sie ja echt das schlimmst vermutet haben, wenn sie sich jetzt so drüber freuen oder?

keine Ahnung. An dem Tag, an dem die Zahlen kamen, stieg die Aktie um fast 8%. Das heißt für mich, es wurde schlimmeres erwartet und die Investoren sind überzeugt. Keine Ahnung, was den erneuten Kursrutsch ausgelöst hat.

Gute Entscheidung. Ich glaube, wir sind uns einig, daß Calpine wieder hoch auf 14-16€ marschiert. Aber dann? Irgendwie kommt sie zurück, wie ein Bumerang. Ist natürlich gut zum Traden, aber langfristig???

also nach Boden schaut mir das gar nicht aus, vielleicht gibts mal eine kurze Gegenreaktion.
Ansonsten würde ich noch weiter abwarten, da auch der Gesamtmarkt zur Zeit nicht gut aussieht.
