Aber egal was passiert.

An Goldhotline,

"At present, there is no need, and at the current gold price, no intention to conduct further hedging as 60 percent of reserves (conservatively stated) are covered."

BUSINESS DAY (SOUTH AFRICA): AUSTRALIANS CASH IN AS SA, NORTH AMERICANS CUT BACK ON FORWARD SALES
Business Day (Johannesburg) ; 23-Feb-2000
Rally in gold price is a bonanza down under
LONDON The recent move by some North American and SA gold producers to push the gold market higher by announcing curbs on forward selling has been welcomed by Australian gold producers.
But rather than joining their foreign gold-producing cousins in sales restraint, Australian gold producers are using the rally in the gold price to extend, rather than reduce, their forward sales positions.
The gold price in Australian dollars is at very attractive levels. It traded above A500 (US315) an ounce recently on the spot market, and the 12-month forward price has been more than A520/oz.
Over the past week we have seen very strong selling interest from the (Australian) producer side. They are not following their North American brethren, says Simon Klimt, product head of commodities with Wetspac Banking Corporation in Sydney.
Canadian producers Placer Dome Inc and Barrick Gold, along with the SA producer AngloGold, said earlier this month that they had reduced forward sales (hedge) positions, or intended to hedge less.
The North American and SA announcements pushed the spot gold price up through US320/oz earlier this month.
With the Australian dollar dipping below 63 US cents, this resulted in an Australian gold price of around A500/oz, the highest for six months.
But the forward premium for the 12month gold price called the contango also increased to around 5% or about A20/oz.
This pushed the 12-months Australian dollar gold price to its highest level for four years, and opened the window for fresh Australian producer forward selling.
The Australian dollar spot gold price has drifted back from those levels over the past few days trading, perhaps partly because of producer selling, and is currently trading at around A480/oz. However, analysts suspect there is more producer selling to be done if the gold market rallies back towards A500/oz.
Traditionally A500/oz is a level producers like to sell at, said Mike Chester, gold analyst in Melbourne with Salomon Smith Barney. According to Salomon Smith Barney, Australian gold producer average cash costs of production in the December quarter were only A316/oz.
We (think) any move towards A500/oz will trigger some Australian producers to act, says Ric Simes, chief economist with bullion dealer Rothschild Australia.
Already the forward sales and options positions of Australian producers are at record levels and they continue to steadily increase, said Chester.
At the end of September, Australian gold producers had hedged a record 1477 tons and since then it had increased further, said Chester. This is equal to five years of Australias gold production.
The average price of the Australian industrys hedge position as at the end of September was A565/oz. This has fallen from an average industry hedge price of A660/oz in 1996, as positions were added into the falling gold market.
It is not just a matter of locking in attractive forward prices. As debt levels in the Australian gold sector had exploded over the past five years, gold producers needed to forward sell for the comfort of banks and for prudence, said Chester.
The significant increase in debt levels relates to project development and corporate acquisitions. At the same time, as equity capital became increasingly difficult to raise a total reversal for the gold mining industry, once the hub of speculative investing gold producers had to turn increasingly to the debt markets. +++++++++++++++++++++++++
Normandy Mining Limited is a strong advocate of hedging disclosure.
The policy was first published in the 1990 Annual Report, and hedge
positions and marked-to-market values disclosed on a quarterly basis
from September 1994 and December 1997 respectively. Hedging has been
conducted in a prudent manner and in moderation - in strict adherence
to our publicly stated policy.
At present, there is no need, and at the current gold price, no
intention to conduct further hedging as 60 percent of reserves
( conservatively stated ) are covered. Normandy continues to deliver
into existing hedge positions, although at current prices with a
predominance of options, this is increasingly into the spot gold
market.
Future hedging will be primarily influenced by development decisions
to guarantee cashflow particularly through the project finance
payback period.
Normandy has demonstrated its confidence in the gold price on at
least five occasions in the last two years. Specifically, Normandy
has:
* Repaid ( bought back ) the final outstanding gold loan - 280,000
ounces ( December 1997 )
* Restructured the hedge book, realising $650 million in a tax
effective manner ( February 1999 )
* Repaid ( bought back ) 500,000 ounce gold Notes - four years early
( July 1999 )
* Maintained a substantial gold exploration budget for 1999/00 ( July
1999 ) , and
* Continues to transition the hedge book to options ( February 1999 to present ) .
Today with the transition in the hedge book to options, 56 percent of
reserves participate in positive gold price movements. With
resources, a high percentage of which are expected to be converted to
reserves, 86 percent participate in positive gold price movements.
Major North American and South African gold companies have recently
commented on their short term hedging intentions. Australian
companies were among the first to develop hedging activities and
accordingly have substantial amounts of gold hedged.
Normandy believes the interests of Australian gold producers would be
best served by giving consideration to strategies that minimise the
impact of hedging activity and limit the quantum executed in any
given time frame.
With the majority or central banks and gold producers identifying
their intention, Normandy also calls on bullion banks, when acting as
principal, and hedge funds trading in gold, to also make their
intentions clear in the interests of market transparency.
