BERLIN--Gerhard Schroeder, the 58-year-old German chancellor, aroused speculation about his marriage over the weekend when he asked a Berlin court to block media reports about his sleeping arrangements.
But instead of quashing talk about his relationship with his wife, Doris, 39, the sensitive content of his application for an injunction against a local paper was published in a magazine Sunday and confirmed reports that the couple spend much of the time apart.
Focus magazine said his statement denies that he and Doris had been having furious arguments about his absence from their apartment in Hanover.
But the chancellor added: "I stay away from our joint flat in Hanover more often than official duties demand, and have already set up night quarters elsewhere in the Lower Saxony capital."
A spokesman for the chancellery confirmed that Schroeder had gained an injunction against the low-circulation Morkischen Oderzeitung newspaper, preventing it from repeating rumors about the state of his fourth marriage.
The episode threatens to be a repeat of his disastrous handling of the "hair dye incident" earlier this year.
A largely ignored comment by a stylist who recommended Schroeder stop dyeing his hair became international news when the chancellor went to court to stop the assertion from being repeated.
Already known as the "Audi chancellor"--a reference to the four wedding rings he has worn and the badge of the German car manufacturer--he is said to rely heavily on the advice of his wife, a former tabloid journalist, on handling the press.
She has been criticized for attacking the media, saying some papers are waging a campaign against him.
His increasingly irritated reaction to comments about him in the press is being seen as a sign that he is losing his nerve.
