Any of the four transcoding servers and services we
looked at in this eValuation -- from Aether Systems
Inc., AvantGo Inc., IBM and Everypath Inc. -- will let a
company make its Web site attractive for mobile users,
but eWeek Labs advises companies that they`ll have to
pay handsomely for those results.
Transcoding allows companies to create one Web site
and deploy its content to many devices, including
wireless PDAs (personal digital assistants) and smart
phones.
Aether`s Scout Web, AvantGo`s Enterprise Server and
IBM`s WebSphere Transcoding Publisher can be
categorized as roll-your-own products -- designed for
in-house development and mobilization of a Web site.
Everypath, on the other hand, is an ASP (application
service provider) that offers one-stop shopping for
companies that want to deliver their Web content to
mobile users and don`t have the exper tise to do it
in-house.
None of these products comes cheap. Be prepared to
spend tens of thousands of dollars for any of them. As
more and more mobile devices come onto the market --
especially smart phones -- mobilizing a Web site will
become a matter of course, and the price of these
transcoding products and services, which are still in
their infancy, will come down. However, these products
provide real value today and are powerful enough for
large sites trying to extend their brands to a mobile
audience.
We had each vendor transcode a sample Web site,
which contained a variety of images, links and
JavaScript supplied for the eVal by the University of
Wisconsin-Madison. We used Palm Inc.`s Palm V
emulator, which is designed to run on Windows or Mac
OS, to display the transcoded results on a PDA and
Nokia Inc.`s Nokia 6150 WAP (Wireless Application
Protocol)-enabled cell phone emulator to display the
results on a smart phone.
Given the small screens and limited bandwidth of mobile
devices, mobile users want to see only a subset of a
Web page`s contents, such as a stock quote, news
headline or weather report, and not screen after screen
of graphics and nonessential text. We were pleasantly
surprised to see that each product was able to display
not only the most significant text of the Web site, but
also links to other pages.
ScoutWeb, Enterprise Server and Transcoding Publisher
are good choices for organizations that want direct
control over their transcoding server and Web content.
Direct control is especially important for sites that want
to install end-to-end security, such as PKI (public-key
infrastructure), to enable e-commerce. ScoutWeb,
Transcoding Publisher and Everypath`s service directly
support SSL (Secure Sockets Layer); AvantGo charges
extra for this support.
The transcoding servers are complex, so companies
need developers experienced in HTML and XML
(Extensible Markup Language) to get started.
Most of the evaluators thought that IBM`s WebSphere
Transcoding Publisher, although not perfect, had better
tools and administration features than the other
build-it-yourself products.
Although the evaluators are experienced in networking
and Web site development, transcoding a Web site was
new territory for some of them. The newcomers to
transcoding were especially impressed with the results
of Everypath`s ASP approach, where that company`s
developers mobilized the test Web site. In fact,
Everypath turned in the best display results.
