Hi an alle Midifans,

In Amiland geht´s ja schon wieder kräftig bergauf.
MfG

MedImmune Rides on More than Biotech Fever
By Nadine Wong, Biotech Stocks Columnist
After two stock splits in less than a year and a half, MedImmune still looks like a buy.
MedImmune (Nasdaq:MEDI - news) shareholders have seen their shares more than double in value after the company split shares on the last day of 1998. The company recently announced another stock split, this time three for one, set for mid-May of this year. How can MedImmune maintain such explosive growth?
Given that the biotech sector is in a rally mode, MedImmune may have the momentum to continue skyward. And thanks to its drug Synagis, MedImmune has a booster pack for revenue growth with positive earnings.
Sole Treatment for Premature-Baby Virus
Synagis is the only drug approved by the Food and Drug Administration for preventing respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection in high-risk infants. RSV is a virus that attacks the lining of the respiratory systems, causing a very high incidence of pneumonia and other respiratory problems.
Synagis was launched in the US in September 1998, in time for the peak RSV season, which runs from October to May. RSV can be a life-threatening infection for infants born prematurely. Synagis is the company`s second-generation product for RSV and is expected to cannibalize the market from its first-generation product, Respigam.
RSV is one of the more common yet problematic diseases to affect infants, primarily premature infants and low-birthweight babies. RSV outbreaks can account for as much as 50% of all hospitalizations of infants.
To Expand Drug Applications
So far this RSV season, Synagis has been prescribed to treat 60,000 patients. That was about the same number of patients treated the entire last season. MedImmune estimates that it is on target to treat more than 80,000 patients before the latest season is over. That represents only a quarter of the total US patient population that could benefit from Synagis.
In addition, MedImmune is seeking to use Synagis in immuno-compromised infants, infants with congenital heart disease, and infants requiring care in the neo-natal intensive care unit to prevent or treat RSV.
Each year, approximately 288,000 infants are born in the US with gestational age at or below 35 weeks. Severely premature infants are those who are born at or before 32 weeks of gestation. All told, Synagis could address a market of approximately 325,000 infants a year.
No Competition as Sales Expand
In late January, MedImmune reported fourth-quarter 1999 earnings of 69 cents a share, easily beating Street estimates of 62 cents. Most of these earnings were derived from strong sales of Synagis, with fourth-quarter sales jumping 63% to $151.1 million from a year ago. This beat sales estimates by $4 million.
About 97% of Synagis sales were domestic, which is encouraging news, as the international market has only just begun to be approached by MedImmune`s sales force. Annual Synagis sales were $293 million in 1999, up 63% from $183.9 million.
Overall, the company is well-positioned to expand Synagis sales into the $500 million range within the next two years. The biggest sales driver will be international exposure and further penetration into the US market, which is anticipated as well.
A huge advantage for MedImmune is that there are no competitive products on the market or other treatments in clinical development to provide any competition in the near term. American Home Products (NYSE:AHP - news) is developing a vaccine that will involve a development timeframe of over five years.
Acquisition Adds Oncology Products
I think MedImmune`s product development is deep enough to continue adding to its revenue stream. The acquisition of U.S. Bioscience, completed late last year, fills out the company`s pipeline with products and candidates that will contribute to significant revenue growth. U.S. Bioscience, of West Conshohocken, Pa., specializes in the development and commercialization of products for patients with cancer.
The acquisition immediately establishes an oncology franchise for MedImmune, adding approved drugs such as Ethyol, Hexalen and NeuTrexin. MedImmune is developing Vitaxin, which chokes off nutrient and oxygen supplies to tumors and helps prevent tumor metastasis into other organs. Vitaxin is now in Phase II studies. MedImmune has other drugs in clinical trials for the treatment of cancers, psoriasis, and human pappiloma virus and several vaccines that are in the early stages of development.
MedImmune is a winner and the company is firing on all cylinders.
