______________________________________
6 Jan 2000 - Etrade’s bumper December quarter
by: Matthew Haes
Etrade’s aggressive marketing campaign has resulted in an increase in its customer base of 32 per cent in the December quarter to 34,000. Brokerage revenue for the six months to December 1999 was $7 million, while brokerage for the year to June 1999 was $5 million.
Such growth can be attributed to a reduction in regular brokerage fees to $39.95, including further discounts for frequent traders, new investors selling allocations in the numerous floats and ANZ beginning to target its internet banking customers to use Etrade’s services.
Etrade expects to encroach upon Comsec’s dominance of the online trading market during 2000 by leveraging off of its ANZ relationship and developing services such as Etrade Pro for professional day traders and managed funds.
Etrade’s results signify the emphasis placed upon revenue, customers acquired, alliances and future developments when assessing the early progress of internet companies.

MEDIA RELEASE
E*TRADE Australia (ASX Code: ETR) has consolidated its strong
position in the online broking industry today by reporting operating
revenues of $7.4 million for the half year ended 31 December 1999.
This caps off an exceptional period of growth for the company, which
saw revenues increase 90 percent from $3.9 million for the six
months ended 30 June 1999.
In its half-year report lodged today, the company reported a
consolidated operating loss before abnormal items for the six-month
period ended 31 December 1999 of $6.12 million. As previously
reported, the company posted an abnormal non-cash expense of
$42,180,000, representing the book value of the 6 million shares
issued to ANZ under the alliance with the bank approved by
shareholders in August 1999.
E*TRADE Australia continues to maximise the effectiveness of its
marketing activities and strong brand momentum as evidenced by its
performance in January 2000. During the month, E*TRADE Australia`s
gross revenue was up 30 percent over December 1999, representing an
annualised gross revenue exceeding $25 million.
In the three months ending 31 January 2000, the brokerage business
generated operational profits, exceeding half a million dollars,
before marketing expenses.
"Our track record of impressive revenue growth and the low
operational costs inherent in E*TRADE Australia`s all-electronic
business model allow us to budget to achieve operational breakeven by
June 2000," said Kerry Roxburgh, Group Chief Executive Officer. "We
are budgeting for revenue growth to continue strongly and as that
happens marketing expenses will decline as a proportion of the
overall revenue and cost base. In addition, based upon annualised
January 2000 gross revenue, our current market capitalisation
represents a revenue multiple of approximately six times."
"Our marketing strategy is definitely paying off," said Malcolm Spry,
Chairman. "E*TRADE Australia is the strongest brand in the online
broking market, a position that has been achieved through a series of
well-executed marketing and product development initiatives. We will
continue to build the brand aggressively to expand our leadership
position."
The half-year report shows E*TRADE Australia has a significant cash
war chest available to fund its business development and drive the
brand into the future. Cash reserves at 31 December 1999 were $29.6
million (approximately 50 cents per share), down just $1 million
since 30 June 1999. The half-year report shows an operational cash
outflow of $4.7 million in the half year, offset by a capital
injection of $4.5 million in August 1999.
"We are delighted to report that E*TRADE Australia is in a very strong
financial position and as we prepare to launch many more strategic
initiatives in the next six months, we expect the strong growth to
continue," added Mr Roxburgh.
In accordance with ASX listing rule 3.16.1, E*TRADE Australia
announces Ms Judy Balint`s resignation as a Director along with Mr
Arthur Havers as her Alternate. Mr Jarrett Lilien was appointed to
the Board in Ms Balint`s place, representing E*TRADE Group Inc, along
with Mr Mathias Helleu as his Alternate.
On behalf of E*TRADE Australia, Malcolm Spry, said "we appreciate the
services provided by Ms Balint and regret that she is no longer in a
position to fulfill her role as Director because of the demands being
placed upon her by the expanding E*TRADE Group internationally."
Mr Lilien was Chief Executive Officer of TIR Securities worldwide.
TIR Securities was acquired by E*TRADE Group Inc in August 1999. He
is now Deputy Chief International Officer and Managing Director
International Operations and Country Management of E*TRADE Group Inc.
Mr Helleu is Managing Director of TIR SE Asia Australia and Chief
Executive Officer of E*TRADE Asia.
"Mr Lilien and Mr Helleu bring valuable experience to the Board and
we welcome them to the E*TRADE Australia Board," said Malcolm Spry.

Hi Etrade Aus. Fans.

Außerdem soll Etrade in 4 Monaten den Break Even erreichen.

Außerdem soll Etrade in 4 Monaten den Break Even erreichen.
