Simula Receives Patent for Body Armor Technology; Company Expects Technology Portfolio to be Key in Merger or Sale

TEMPE, Ariz.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 19, 2002--Simula Inc. (AMEX:SMU) announced that it has received a U.S. patent for its latest body armor design. The unique design enables fabrication of the industry`s lightest-weight body armor, protecting the wearer against handgun threats. The Company said that its ballistic fabric armor architecture is gaining new and expanded applications for both commercial and military soft body armor. Based on the patent protection and new product launches announced on October 15, 2002, soft body armor licenses are expected to provide growing royalty revenue in 2003. Licensed body armor designs provided a significant portion of the Company`s total license revenues in 2002.

On December 16, Simula announced that it is exploring strategic alternatives seeking a successful merger or sale of the Company within the next year. The recent successes in monetizing technologies, as demonstrated by Simula`s licensing efforts, should play an important role in maximizing the value of the Company in a sale or merger. Simula currently has 39 U.S. patents, 72 foreign patents, and 16 U.S. patents pending. Only approximately 13 U.S. patents are utilized in its current product offerings.

Simula designs and makes systems and devices that save human lives. Its core markets are military aviation safety, military personnel safety, and land vehicle safety. Simula`s core technologies include inflatable restraints, energy-absorbing seating systems, advanced polymer materials, lightweight transparent and opaque armor products, personnel protective equipment, and emergency bailout parachutes.
