Plenty of interest in Bougainville mine

SEVERAL companies are vying for the right to re-open the shuttered Panguna mine on Bougainville, the president of the island`s autonomous government said yesterday.
President Joseph Kabui wasn`t willing to name individual company names, but said Australian, American, Canadian, Chinese and Japanese firms had expressed interest.
It is believed the group includes at least one global mining firm. Any decision will have to wait until the people of Bougainville approve the mine`s redevelopment in an island-wide vote in line with its constitution.
"The timing is something that I cannot put my finger on right now," Mr Kabui told the Herald. "Mining is a sensitive issue but at the the same time ... we definitely need a massive injection of funds to revitalise the economy of Bougainville to bring it to where it was before the crisis."
The massive Panguna mine was operated by Rio Tinto until attacks by secessionist rebels forced its closure in 1989.
Rio still owns 54 per cent of the mine, but has long insisted it wants to divest the asset.
Bougainville Copper chairman Peter Taylor was overseas yesterday and unavailable for comment. But it is believed that Rio has little interest in reopening the mine, meaning it could be sold to another company.
The mine has been heavily damaged by fighting on the island, and some analysts estimate it would cost $US1.5 billion ($2 billion) to re-open.
"There`s a lot of work that`s got to be done. It`s not a simple job," Mr Kabui said. "It`s going to be very, very expensive."
Shares in Bougainville Copper rose 72 per cent earlier this week on news that Papua New Guinea`s Mining Minister, Sam Akoitai, was talking with Rio executives in London about re-opening the mine.
Papua New Guinea`s Prime Minister, Sir Michael Somare, said earlier this week he would like to see the mine re-open.
But reports that Bougainville`s autonomous government was seeking UN support to remove former Fijian soldiers from the island caused shares in the volatile stock to fall 24c, or 23 per cent, to 81c yesterday.
