Ulster gold rush hopes rise as firm goes prospecting

A NORTHERN Ireland gold rush moved one step closer today after it emerged that an exploration company has applied for a prospecting licence to examine further parts of Armagh and Down.

Conroy Diamonds and Gold, a Dublin- based business, has already discovered a substantial seam of the precious metal in the Corcaskea area of Co Monaghan close to the border with Armagh and believes it is part of an expansive strip called the Longford/Down Mastiff.

The company has applied for a prospecting licence from the Department of Enterprise to search in the Craigavon area.

The licence also covers areas within Armagh, Banbridge and Lisburn District Councils and all the local authorities have been contacted by the Department requesting their views.

The chairman of the company, Richard Conroy, said there was an Armagh/Monaghan gold seam to be explored.
"Clearly there is an ridge of metal running from Monaghan to Armagh and from the evidence we have seen it is quite extensive," he said.

"There is perhaps 20 square kilometres of the cross-border site, roughly half in Monaghan and half in Armagh."
"We will now be probing in other areas to find exactly the extent of the site and assess its potential for development but any move in that regard will be far down the line.

"We have been well supported by landowners in the area but we are a long way from consulting local councils."
Conroys have been drilling in Keady and Tandragee since 1996. Finds made include one at Cargalisgorran near Keady and Tynacree.

The gold would have to be extracted using mines and heavy duty equipment, unlike othere parts of the world where panning has been employed.

(Reuters) -Serbia will soon start to offer concessions for exploration and mining of its mineral resources.

Slobodan Ruzic, a deputy of the outgoing energy and mining minister, said awarding concessions in the mining sector was one of priority tasks of the ministry. "Our intention is to try to attract foreign funds from abroad to start exploration and exploitation of our mineral resources,"

Earlier this month, British-Australian mining giant Rio Tinto Plc told Reuters it was ready to invest in mineral exploration in Serbia.

The company said it was in talks with state-owned mining and smelting firm Rudarsko-topionicarski Basen Bor (RTB Bor) in eastern Serbia because of the rospect of finding gold and copper there.

RTB Bor officials have said the two firms were close to signing a deal. Ruzic said he was aware that Rio Tinto (LSE: RIO.L - news - msgs) was interested in sites around the eastern Serbian town of Bor, but denied that the two firms were close to a deal.

"But Rio Tinto , just like U.S. firm Phelps Dodge Corp (NYSE: PD - news) or any other company interested in the sector, can participate at a concession tender, under equal conditions."

"...We must see to it that both interests of the state and interests of our firms are protected."Ruzic said the ministry was preparing changes to existing laws on mining and geological exploration in line with European standards.

Irland : Arcon entdeckte 1986 ein Silber-Zink-Blei deposit in Irland.Die Erzreserven wurden durch Exploration erweitert :

ARCON International Resources Plc announces that it has increased the size of the recently discovered resource at its Galmoy zinc mine in Ireland. Drilling in the R Zone has continued, to establish the northern resource limit and commence infill drilling in the high gradecore. The Resource, at a 4.5% Zn cut off, is now estimated to be: 2.3 million tonnes
      @ 19.0% zinc (Zn), 7.2% lead (Pb) & 66g/t silver (Ag)

Ein Durchschnitt von 26 % Erz im Abbaumaterial ist super ! :lick:

P.S : South African number two gold producer Gold Fields would spend $31 million to buy the 49 percent share of the Arctic Platinum Project in Finland that it does not already own.
