After Evading Delistment, Beacon Power Bounces Back in Early Week Trading
WILMINGTON, Mass., Aug 19, 2003 (The Sun - Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News
via COMTEX) -- Last week, Beacon Power Corp. was in danger of having its shares
delisted from the Nasdaq Small Cap Stock Market.
On Monday, its first day of trading after announcing it had staved off
delistment, Beacon was among the most popular securities traded.
Last week`s Northeast blackout pushed alternative energy and power quality
providers into the spotlight, including Beacon, a tiny (20 employees) research
and development company.
The company, which is developing a flywheel product that can store up to 25
kilowatts of power, saw its depressed shares soar Monday, closing at 92 cents a
share. More than 49 million shares exchanged hands, second only to tech
bellwether Intel Corp. on the day. Their high for the day was $1.16, more than
triple their close on Friday.
"Clearly, there is resonance within the utility industry, and within our market,
for the value of what we do," said Beacon Power spokesman Gene Hunt, in an
interview. "By any measure, the interest has heightened."
It`s also welcomed -- Beacon has reported no revenue at all this year.
CEO Bill Capp, in an interview Monday night on AM-1060 Radio`s "Market Wrap,"
said the company is aiming to raise $10 million to $15 million in venture
capital to continue developing products.
Hunt said the company`s technology could be useful to help avert outages, albeit
on a smaller level than what happened last week. He said that during the past
four days, Beacon has received "a handful" of inquiries from unnamed power
companies interested in its technology.
First Albany analyst Sanjay Shrestha, in an interview with CBS.MarketWatch.com,
said it was too soon to predict the outcome of the blackout, but that companies
working on superconductive technology and power quality should benefit.
Last Thursday afternoon, America experienced its biggest-ever blackout, hitting
home in places like New York City and Montreal and disrupting even Internet and
cellular phone lines. Since then, politicians have called for more safeguards to
prevent future blackouts.
Should alternative sources be considered, Beacon could reap revenue.
The company, headquartered at 34 Ballardvale St., was formed in 1997 as a
spinoff from Cambridge-based SatCon.
It initially targeted a booming telecom industry for its applications, but since
the economic downturn, it has refocused on other markets with three products,
ranging from solar inverters (which allow solar-power users to sell back their
unused electricity to power grids) to another one being tested, which stores
energy and helps boost back power once an outage occurs.
Hunt admits the company will likely never provide massive multi-megawatt
applications, but it could help stave off outages.
"What is feasible, is that once electronic power is compromised, we can support
that through our storage product," he said. "Energy storage can provide a level
of resiliency for the network that does not exist today."
