Borders & Southern soars on Darwin rumours
By Darshini Shah | Wed, 18/04/2012 - 12:37
Shares in Borders and Southern Petroleum (BOR) soared more than 30%, as rumours circulated that the company would announce pivotal well results from the Darwin prospect.
While no official comment has been made, the company said on 16 March that it would release an update in four to five weeks' time.
There were also rumours suggesting activity on the firm's rig in the Falkland Islands, with the idea that a change or expansion of personnel might signal a development.
Drilling on the Darwin prospect, believed to contain around 760 million barrels of oil, started at the end of January and is the first in a series of exploration wells that will test potentially large reservoir targets in the deeper water off the Falklands.
Shares in other Falklands-focused companies including Rockhopper Exploration (RKH), Falklands Oil and Gas (FOGL) and Desire Petroleum (DES) benefited from the halo effect.
The rumours excited investors, with shares in Borders & Southern the most actively-traded stock on the Interactive Investor platform.
User 'Pro S2009' said: "The big funds and institutions not already in [Borders & Southern] cannot and will not start to buy until the official RNS is out, and if its good, which it looks like, then you can expect to see the big buyers come in. Just as Rockhopper Exploration went from 38p to 68p before the RNS, and after the RNS it went to 280p. The rerating has only just started."
However, other users were more cautious.
'Sheffieldsteeler' warned "far too many" oil stocks rise in anticipation of results that do not live up to expectations. "Remember that out of all the drills so far in the Falklands, only Sea Lion can be categorised as a 'commercial find'. Hold tight and enjoy the ride, but keep some perspective on this."
Analyst comment
Broker Miraubaud said it likes the company's acreage and management, and was confident that the Borders & Southern has the technical understanding to unlock the potential of the basin. "With the Darwin prospect alone worth £11 per share, we rate this stock as a 'buy', with a price target of 150p
