      Letzter Press Release:

SPACEHAB APPOINTS NEW CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER
Organizational Changes Align Company With Expanding Space Exploration Vision

Nasa sets May shuttle launch date

      By Pallab Ghosh
BBC science correspondent in Washington DC

      Space shuttle, Nasa
The launch will be the first since the Columbia disaster
The US space agency (Nasa) has set a new target date of May 15 to return the space shuttle to flight.

The shuttle Discovery`s primary mission is to test out new safety procedures imposed on Nasa following the Columbia disaster two years ago.

It will launch in daylight, so mission managers can check all systems in detail during take-off.

Nasa`s fleet has been grounded since the Columbia disaster in January 2003, which killed seven astronauts.

Mission engineers will be looking closely at the performance of the foam on the fuel tank, the tiles on the heat shield and the carbon material used on the wings.

The crew will check the vehicle`s heat shield while in orbit, and try out different repair techniques.

As part of the tighter safety procedures, a second shuttle, Atlantis, will be prepared in case a rescue mission is required.

The launch is the first of two proposed test missions. If these go to plan then Nasa will aim to recommence construction of the International Space Station at the earliest opportunity.

Lynne Clein, Nasa`s deputy director of space operations, said the changes made as a result of the Columbia disaster were not just confined to the shuttle programme but extended across the agency.

"Some of those include establishing an independent technical authority and an engineering and safety centre so there are people outside of the programme who serve as checks and balances," she told BBC News.

She added that she felt the changes "would stand the test of time".

The shuttle`s launch window goes up to 3 June.

      @dandeluca

      @jacksonville
was bringt dich zu dieser Aussage? Beispiele bitte.

Japan Eyes Future Manned Moon Base, Space Shuttle
      By Associated Press

      posted: 28 February 2005
      12:10 p.m. ET

TOKYO (AP) -- Japan`s plans to start building a manned base on the moon and a manned space shuttle within the next 20 years, a newspaper report said Monday.

Japan`s space agency, JAXA, is drawing up plans to develop a robot to conduct probes on the moon by 2015, then begin constructing a solar-powered manned research base on the planet and design a reusable manned space vessel like the U.S. space shuttle by 2025, the Mainichi Shimbun said.

The space agency`s budget could be boosted six-fold to $57 billion to assist those plans, the Mainichi said.

The plans also include using satellites to send information on evacuation routes, locators on people`s whereabouts and alerts to cell phones in the event of major emergencies like a tsunami, the daily said.

JAXA officials were unavailable for immediate comment late Monday.

Japan has long focused on unmanned scientific probes. In a major policy switch last year, however, a government panel recommended that the country consider its own manned space program.

Long Asia`s leading spacefaring nation, Japan has been struggling to get out from under the shadow of China, which put its first astronaut into orbit in October 2003. Beijing has since announced it is aiming for the moon.

One month after China`s breakthrough, a Japanese H-2A rocket carrying two spy satellites malfunctioned after liftoff, forcing controllers to end its mission in a spectacular fireball.

Further launches were put on hold for 15 months, but on Saturday Japan took a big step to re-establish the credibility of its space program with the successful launch of a domestically designed H-2A rocket that placed a communications satellite into orbit.

SPACEHAB Signs Space Act Agreement with NASA; Strategic Partnership with Zyvex Provides Advances in Micro-Manufacturing Technology

      Wednesday, May 25, 2005 11:00 ET

SPACEHAB, Incorporated (NASDAQ/NMS:SPAB), a leading provider of commercial space services, announced today that it has entered into a non-reimbursable Space Act Agreement with NASA to facilitate the commercial development and testing of a micro-miniature mass spectrometer for potential use on low earth orbit missions and in NASA`s emerging Exploration Program.

"For human space flight missions, NASA must continually monitor air quality and toxicity levels to ensure the health and safety of the crew," said Michael E. Bain, SPACEHAB Chief Operating Officer. "NASA desires improved capabilities in this area, but developing, transporting, and installing large, complex detection and classification equipment on-orbit is extremely problematic. We are excited about this opportunity to provide a solution that is small, light-weight, and portable enough to be easily delivered to, and operated on, the space station and anywhere else humans live and work in space."

In a unique partnership with Zyvex Corporation - a leading molecular nanotechnology company that specializes in micro and nanomanufacturing, micro electro mechanical systems, and nanomaterials - SPACEHAB looks to be a supplier of miniaturized technology to the aerospace community and others. The implementation of the Space Act Agreement is the first step in a plan to support the development of additional micro-manufacturing applications.

Once completed, Zyvex`s mini-mass spectrometer and SPACEHAB`s interface equipment will be the approximate size of a deck of playing cards. Current on-orbit systems weigh approximately 100 pounds and take up the space of a car trunk. The product of this effort has the potential for a 90% weight savings, increased reliability, and costs a fraction of the present technology.

Under the agreement, a `brassboard` system will be developed and tested in a terrestrial-based laboratory by the end of the calendar year. If proven successful, SPACEHAB intends to build an operational unit that could be initially offered as part of the Company`s logistics module capability and also leased or sold to customers individually. SPACEHAB`s logistics module is under contract for use on two International Space Station missions currently scheduled for launch in 2006.
