Coldplay, Madonna and U2 will headline the Live 8 charity concert in London, it was announced today.
Confirmation of the acts to perform at the free concert, which will take place in Hyde Park, came as promoters unveiled the lineups for the five concerts forming a sequel to the 1985 Live Aid event.

"It seemed to me that we could gather together again - not for charity, but for political justice," the organiser, Bob Geldof, said as the Live 8 team explained plans to pressure the leaders of the world`s richest G8 nations into taking action on African poverty.



The concerts will be held on July 2, with events taking place in Berlin, Paris, Philadelphia and Rome as well as London.
Robbie Williams, REM, Keane, Sir Paul McCartney, Scissor Sisters, Dido, Mariah Carey and the Stereophonics will also perform in London, while Will Smith, the Dave Matthews Band, Bon Jovi, Stevie Wonder, Puff Daddy and Jay-Z will headline the Philadelphia event.

Among the artists scheduled to appear at Berlin are A-Ha, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Lauryn Hill and Brian Wilson, while the concert at the Circus Maximus, in Rome, will feature musicians including Faith Hill and Duran Duran.

Jamiroquai, Craig David, Youssou N`Dour and Yannick Noah will take part in the Paris concert.

After the concerts, Geldof and his fellow Live 8 organiser Midge Ure, who co-wrote the Band Aid hit Do They Know It`s Christmas, called on demonstrators to travel to Scotland and put pressure on the G8 leaders, who meet at Gleneagles between July 6 and 8.

Geldof said "massive fleets of trains, trucks, planes and private boats" would move towards Edinburgh for the eve of the G8 summit on July 6, and organisers hope the event and protests will bring action on the cancellation of African debt, doubling of aid and progress on trade justice.

He also called for the Pope to travel to Scotland, saying the pontiff`s life had been characterised by the theology of the poor.

The prime minister, Tony Blair, will push plans to tackle poverty at the G8 summit, and the US president, George Bush, will attend the talks.

The Make Poverty History campaign has organised a week of protests, and Nelson Mandela and the Dalai Lama have all been asked to address a rally to mark the summit`s first day.

Tickets for the Hyde Park concert will be allocated by a text message competition beginning on June 6. A multiple-choice question will be broadcast on the radio and printed in newspapers on Monday morning, with people able to send in the answer via a text message costing £1.50.

All proceeds will go to charity, organisers said, and the successful applicants will be chosen at random, with each winning entry receiving two tickets.

Live 8 is likely to dwarf its predecessor, with the series of concerts lasting more than 16 hours. Global viewing figures are set to double the 1.5 billion people who watched Live Aid.

Speaking at the Ivor Novello awards last week, Geldof said: "What started 20 years ago is coming to a political point in a few weeks. There is more than a chance that the boys and girls with guitars finally get to tilt the world on its axis."

Ure said: "It`s big. And it`s as petrifying as the build-up to Live Aid, if not more so. We`ll have all the biggest names we can find. But it`s not just about big names - it`s about making a point."

Live Aid, which took place at Wembley Stadium, featured bands including the Style Council, Queen, Status Quo and Spandau Ballet.

Another show was held simultaneously at the JFK stadium, Philadelphia, and the two events raised around £40m for Ethiopian famine victims. Almost half the cash was spent on immediate food aid, with the rest set aside for long-term development.

Geldof has continued to campaign against poverty in Africa, while Mr Blair has made aid to the continent one of the key themes of Britain`s leadership of the G8 this year.

Fünf Konzerte am 2. Juli in London, Berlin, Paris, Rom und Philadelphia unter dem Motto Live 8 sollen die Regierungschefs der G8-Staaten unter Druck setzen. Bei ihrem Gipfel in Schottland in der darauf folgenden Woche sollen sie einen Schuldenerlass für die ärmsten Länder der Welt und eine Anhebung der Entwicklungshilfe beschließen.

«Dieses Mal geht es nicht um eine wohltätige Gabe, sondern um politische Gerechtigkeit», sagte Geldof, ehemaliger Sänger der Boomtown Rats und Organisator des Live-Aid-Konzerts von 1985. Er rief dazu auf, während des Gipfels in der schottischen Hauptstadt Edinburgh zu demonstrieren.

Sogar den neuen Papst Benedikt XVI. will Geldof für seine Sache gewinnen: «Ratzingers Leben war durch die Theologie der Armen geprägt», sagte er.

Bis vor einigen Wochen hatte Geldof noch bestritten, dass es ein Live-Aid-Nachfolgekonzert geben würde. Live Aid sei nicht wiederholbar, sagte er immer wieder. Doch mittlerweile haben ihn Bono und andere Popstars, die sich für die Dritte Welt engagieren, vom Gegenteil überzeugt. Allerdings geht es diesmal anders als 1985 nicht darum, Geld zu sammeln. Die Konzerte dienen dazu, den Druck auf die G8-Länder USA, Japan, Deutschland, Großbritannien, Frankreich, Italien, Kanada und Russland zu erhöhen. Für Deutschland wird Bundeskanzler Gerhard Schröder an dem Gipfel teilnehmen.

Das Live-Aid-Konzert von 1985 war weltweit von etwa 1,5 Milliarden Fernsehzuschauern verfolgt worden. Damals standen Stars wie Phil Collins, Bryan Adams, Queen oder David Bowie auf der Bühne. Der Erlös von 120 Millionen Dollar kam Hungernden in Äthiopien zugute. (dpa)

Txt lottery opens for Live 8 tickets

A texting lottery for tickets to London`s Live 8 charity concert opened today with hundreds of thousands expected to spend up to £20m competing for the chance to attend the July 2 event.
Performers expected at the Hyde Park show include Maria Carey, Coldplay, Elton John, Madonna, Paul McCartney, REM, Scissor Sisters, Sting, Robbie Williams and U2.

Four other concerts are being held on the same day across Europe and in the United States under plans announced last week by Bob Geldof to pressure world leaders into eradicating African poverty.


Geldof has called for 1 million people to march through Edinburgh four days later when leaders of the world`s richest nations meet at the G8 summit at Gleneagles.
To win tickets, entrants have to text the answer - A, B or C - to a simple question to telephone number 84599 by midnight on June 12.

The question is: "What city is the forthcoming G8 summit being held near this July? A) Berlin B) Moscow C) Edinburgh."

People can enter as many times as they like to increase their chances of winning tickets, at a cost of £1.50 plus standard texting charges for each entry.

As much as £19.5m could be raised through the texting scramble for tickets, spread betting firm Sporting Index predicted.

The quiz answer can also be submitted by post.

Here is an intriguing question: if it had not been for Bob Geldof and his inspired launch of Band Aid and Live Aid, where would we be now? Would the current state of Africa be both the headline item on the agenda of the coming Group of Eight summit in Edinburgh as well as the source of tension between the G8 heads of government? It would be wrong to pretend that Mr Geldof is a secular saint for his involvement in this issue, but it is hard to dispute the idea that his persistence and energy has given the well-being of Africa a higher profile than it otherwise would have had.



Mr Geldof would be the first to say that he has not been alone, nor indeed even largely responsible for the intermittent public interest in sub-Saharan Africa`s plight. But it is possible and plausible to trace a direct connection from the huge impact of Live Aid in 1985, through the debt relief campaigns of the 1990s, to today`s Make Poverty History multi-polar groundswell. Many other individuals and groups have been involved, and nobody should underestimate their efforts or their importance. Had Mr Geldof not taken an interest in Africa, then many of these campaigns would surely have taken place, a tribute to the tenacity and passion of the activists involved. But Mr Geldof has provided this disparate and loose coalition with a leadership of sorts - not leadership in a conventional sense, but as the rallying point it needed.
It would be peevish to quibble that pampered rock stars can easily afford to help Africa. That is true, only in the sense that we all, in the wealthy north, could always do more to help Africa, as well as many other parts of the world. The five concerts announced this week, planned to coincide with the G8 meeting in Gleneagles, are Mr Geldof`s most ambitious undertaking yet, but it has been planned with cool calculation. The argument for greater aid and debt relief for Africa has already been won in the corridors of Westminster, so the pressure must now be put on the other G8 governments - hence the concerts in Philadelphia, Berlin, Paris and Rome. The media interest, the size of the crowds, the presence of celebrities may influence politicians in a way that amplifies the weight of protest, an effect that would otherwise require years of campaigning.

With only a little over a month until the G8 summit, time is running out for a deal to be reached on the additional aid and debt relief that Africa deserves. At this stage the pace of negotiations is crucial, so it is a worrying sign that Tony Blair feels a personal appearance in Washington is necessary. Since February all the mood music from the White House on the subject of helping Africa has been gloomy; reports of the encounter between South Africa`s president Thabo Mbeki and George Bush are a depressing reminder that Africa does not rank highly among US priorities. This is extraordinary, given the dangerous condition of some African states. We can hope for something better from the Gleneagles summit, but disappointment appears more likely to be the outcome.

Without US support, what can be done? Quite a lot, fortunately. Africa`s curse in recent years has been to suffer from false friends. Europe`s G8 members - Britain, France, Germany and Italy - must ensure that they do not fall into that category. They do not need the US to make their own pledges of increased aid and debt relief, as well as lower its trade barriers. By forging ahead without the US, Europe`s politicians can send a clear message. Through the European Union, they can also be a true friend of Africa by introducing tough rules to curb the predatory practices used by European companies in their manoeuvring for Africa`s resources. Exploiting states with weak political infrastructures and corrupt leaders and officials - as detailed in our series of reports, which conclude today - is as damaging in its way as the EU`s inexcusable farm subsidies. Europe`s leaders can ensure that the EU`s banks and companies are not part of a new "scramble for Africa". It makes no sense at all for Europe`s governments to be giving with one hand while its businesses are taking it away with the other.

Bob Geldof has been accused of being "deeply patronising" and "missing a golden opportunity" by leaving African musicians out of the predominantly white bill for his series of Live 8 concerts on July 2.
There are no complaints about his aim, which is to put pressure on the G8 leaders to tackle the problems of Africa by taking action on the key issues of debt, trade and aid. But in all of the line-ups for the concerts in London, Philadelphia, Berlin, Paris and Rome, there is only one African included: the Senegalese singer Youssou N`Dour, who will be appearing in Paris.


Chris Blackwell, founder of Island Records, has written to the concert promoter, Harvey Goldsmith, asking for a change. "Why wasn`t Baaba Maal included?" he says. "After all, he is very articulate, he will be in the country at the time, and he is emerging as one of the spokesmen of Africa."
The concerts will include such western stars as Coldplay, U2, Elton John, Madonna and Stevie Wonder, but no invitations were issued to such major African stars as Salif Keita, Femi Kuti or Ladysmith Black Mambazo - nor to north African celebrities such as Khaled, Rachid Taha or Souad Massi.

Ian Ashbridge of Wrasse Records accused Geldof of being "deeply patronising in organising a concert for Africa and then not including African artists". He argues that Geldof "talks about fair trade for Africa, but he`s acting just like the west when it comes to choosing who will appear. He said that he wanted to tilt the world a bit in favour of the poor and Africa, and he`s missed a golden opportunity to do just that."

Andy Kershaw, the DJ who helped with the TV presentation of Live Aid, said: "This is outrageous and deeply smug. They are saying, `Don`t neglect Africa` - but that`s just what they are doing here".

Geldof`s spokesman for the event said yesterday: "Bob had just three weeks to put it all together, and he went to his address book and rang the people that he knew. He wanted a major line-up of rock and pop stars and he should be commended for the line-up that he`s got."

Oasis `snub` Live 8

Oasis have snubbed Live 8 after originally saying they would appear.



The band had told Sir Bob Geldof they wanted to be part of the line-up and would perform at the Hyde Park concert.

But they later said they were too busy because they had to play their home town of Manchester on the same night as part of their world tour.



Other acts are still managing to perform on the day and fulfil previous engagements, however. U2 will fly to a gig in Vienna - 500 miles further away from Hyde Park than Manchester - after the show.

Because of council regulations the event, which replaces the annual Princes Trust concert, will have to finish at 8pm.

A show insider said: `Oasis were one of the first bands Bob called because they were one of the seminal groups of the last decade.

`They said they were going to do it and seemed really excited about it.

`But then they said they could not do it, and their name had to be taken off the line-up at the last minute. Bob was particularly upset as he spoke to the band himself.`

A spokesman for Oasis would not comment.

QUEEN CANCELS EDINBURGH VISIT FEARING GELDOF`S G8 CHAOS



British monarch QUEEN ELIZABETH II has abandoned her yearly holiday at her palace in Edinburgh, Scotland because it clashes with rocker SIR BOB GELDOF`s plans to stage a massive protest outside the capital`s G8 Summit meeting on 2 July (05).

The Queen feared chaos would ensue if she was present in the Scottish capital at the time of the march, despite local police insisting she would be perfectly secure at the Palace of Holyroodhouse.

A spokeswoman at Buckingham Palace says, "A decision was taken that the queen will not spend a week at Holyroodhouse this summer because of the G8 summit.

"She will still be holidaying in Scotland, but her usual week - around the beginning of July - will be split and she will take it in parts instead.

"The decision was taken for obvious reasons."

The Queen has also shelved plans for her annual garden party at her Scottish residence until 28 July.

Bush to offer Africa £370m famine relief

George Bush is expected to meet Britain`s Africa agenda only part way with the announcement of £370m for famine relief when he appears at a joint press conference in Washington today with Tony Blair.
The expected promise falls far short of Mr Blair`s hopes for a long-term US commitment to Africa ahead of next month`s G8 summit in Scotland, but allows the prime minister to claim some progress from his White House visit.



Aid agencies criticised the move, claiming it did not go nearly far enough.
"If this is President Bush`s only response to the crisis in Africa, we think he cannot be serious about alleviating poverty," said Jonathan Glennie, a senior policy analyst from Christian Aid.

"The sum of £370m is a drop in the ocean compared to what Africa really needs - to reach the UN millennium development goals requires an extra £15bn to £20bn per year in aid. Let us hope this is only his opening gambit."

Mr Blair`s official spokesman warned last night against prejudging the Gleneagles G8 meeting on the basis of today`s talks. "This visit is part of the preparation for Gleneagles, not Gleneagles itself," he said.

"So we are not expecting... to see the final US position. That will come at Gleneagles."

In an interview in today`s Financial Times, Mr Blair conceded. however, that the British effort to secure Washington`s support for a scheme to double aid to Africa by tapping the international capital markets was now at an end.

The international finance facility, a brainchild of the chancellor, Gordon Brown, would allow governments to spend future aid money now, but Mr Blair told the paper it was one of "certain things we know that they are not going to, that we are not asking them to do".

His visit to Washington is part of a round of shuttle diplomacy to build international agreement on aid and measures to tackle climate change under Britain`s chairmanship of the G8 group of industrialised nations.

Mr Bush has previously said that Mr Brown`s proposed IFF - which would allow poor countries to raise development funds on the international money markets - "doesn`t fit our budgetary process". He is also opposed to the Kyoto protocol, favouring instead a technology-based solution to climate change.

Hopes of a deal at Gleneagles depend heavily on support from Washington, but the signals being sent out ahead of today`s talks indicate Mr Blair is unlikely to receive as much backing from Mr Bush as he would like.

A senior White House official said that Mr Bush and Mr Blair would announce a joint initiative, focusing on the food needs of people vulnerable to famine in Ethiopia and Eritrea as well as humanitarian needs in other African countries.

In addition to the £370m, the US has earmarked $1.4bn (£767m) requested by the UN to address emergency needs. The two leaders are also due to call on other countries to increase their commitment to address humanitarian emergencies in Africa.

The US has long supported the idea of 100% debt cancellation, and has now agreed in principle that extra cash must be provided by the G8 nations, the World Bank and the IMF to make up the lost interest payments due to the World Bank and owed by the African nations.

Debt campaigners in the US, including rock star Bono, are increasingly optimistic of a breakthrough. They have enlisted the support of Brad Pitt, George Clooney and evangelical preacher Pat Robertson in an attempt to create the kind of political pressure now being stoked by Geldof`s Live 8 in Britain.

The deal would apply to as many as 20 African countries, but the precise criteria, including possible yardsticks on good governance, are being discussed with EU nations.

ob live8 öffentlich gesponsort wird, kann ich mir nicht vorstellen, aber @ iguana was gesponsort wird, ist das abgeschotten der Agrarmärkte in Europa und USA für die Agrarprodukte Afrikanischer Länder, wie Bob Geldof so schön erklärte.
Der Anteil des Handels in Afrika am Welthandel beträgt gerade mal 2 Prozent.Die Schulden Afrikas zu erlassen, würde jeden Europäer einen halben Kaugummistreifen kosten.
Jeder Afrikaner wird mit Schulden geboren, und wenn er stirbt sind die Schulden angewachsen. Wir müssen die Schulden erlassen, weil sie ohnehin niemals zurückbezahlt werden, um eine Entwicklung zu ermöglichen, an der wir mindestens genau so interessiert sind, wie die Afrikaner selber. Aber es geht hier nicht um´s Geld alleine, sondern darum, daß seit Ende des kalten Krieges, Afrika aus dem Blickwinkel verloren gegangen ist, weil u.A. keine strategischen Interessen mehr vorhanden, und die Stellvertreterfunktionen nicht mehr gegeben sind.

US-Präsident George W. Bush und Großbritanniens Premierminister Tony Blair wollen den Schuldenberg der armen Staaten in Afrika abbauen. Bedingung sei aber, dass diese Länder sich um Reformen bemühten, stellten die beiden klar.



Washington - Die ärmsten Staaten dürften an der Reform ihrer Wirtschaftssysteme nicht länger durch einen erdrückenden Schuldenberg gehindert werden, sagte Bush nach einem Treffen mit Blair. Länder, die sich um Reformen bemühten, sollten sämtliche Verbindlichkeiten erlassen werden. Bush sagte 674 Millionen Dollar für Afrika zu. Großbritannien will zusätzlich 300 Millionen Dollar bereitstellen, um humanitären Krisen in Afrika zu begegnen.

Blair fordert einen vollständigen Schuldenerlass für alle afrikanischen Länder. "Ich glaube, wir sind auf dem richtigen Weg", sagte er. Er war mit einer Reihe von Vorschlägen zur Hilfe für Afrika in den USA eingetroffen, die in Washington allerdings auf Vorbehalte stoßen. Er setzt sich für ein langfristigeres und deutlich teureres Engagement ein, das der Wirtschaft des armen Kontinents auf die Beine helfen soll und über Spenden hinausgeht. Don`t blow Africa`s chance, Bono warns EU

Bono took the African aid campaign to Brussels today, warning European leaders due to decide next week on a plan to double EU aid to the continent over the next 10 years: "Don`t blow it."
The U2 singer said his message also applied to the world leaders who will meet next month at the G8 summit in Scotland.

After meeting the European commission president, José Manuel Barroso, Bono argued that perhaps one of the reasons people had rejected the European constitution was because they did not feel connected to the vision of Europe promoted by politicians.




The singer, who spoke at a news conference alongside Mr Barroso after the two had met privately for half an hour, said helping Africa was a way for European people to feel such a connection.
Bono said: "I think perhaps that one of the reasons there is not support for the European constitution, the European dream, is because a lot of people don`t share it.

"I am in a band and we travel around Europe and around the world, and what we pick up from our audiences is a lack of vision from Europe. People don`t `feel` Europe."

Bono said the problem of Africa represented a chance for politicians and Europeans to "redescribe" themselves and their capabilities.

He said his message to politicians was: "Don`t blow it. Put down your national flags. Look up from the numbers and see the future."

Mr Barroso said he hoped a doubling of development aid to Africa and other countries would be confirmed at next Thursday`s EU summit in Brussels. "We have some problems in Europe [but] those problems are nothing compared with those people who are dying every day," he said.

Ministers from the EU nations have already endorsed the aid plan, which aims to take the EU`s €46bn (£30bn) annual development aid to over €90 bn by 2015. However, Germany, Italy and Portugal have expressed reservations, citing an economic slowdown as the reason.

Mr Blair will hold talks with business leaders tonight to promote his plans on tackling climate change and African poverty. The prime minister will meet bosses from Shell, British Airways and Ford to set out his agenda for Britain`s presidency of the G8.

The EU summit is an important part of the run-up to next month`s G8 summit in Gleneagles, where the prime minister, Tony Blair, is hoping to use Britain`s presidency of the EU to help win international commitments for debt relief and more aid for Africa.

In Washington, Mr Blair won an agreement in principle on Tuesday from the US president, George Bush, that 18 African countries would be eligible for a 100% write-off of debts owed to the World Bank and the African Development Bank. The chancellor, Gordon Brown, was last night finalising the details of the deal.

Today in Brussels, Bono had encouraging words for the EU, which is currently facing its worst political crisis in decades after France and the Netherlands voted against the new constitutional treaty.

"All this fighting in the European family feels very normal to me," he said, to laughter, at a press conference attended by dozens of EU commission secretaries. "At our kitchen table it was just one long row, and yet that is the thing I miss the most. It was always the families up the road who ate with knives and forks and never spoke to one another."

Europe, Bono said, was like his family: "strong in diversity and narkiness".

He said it was nothing less than "stupid" that thousands of Africans were dying each day for lack of food and poverty; there would always be natural disasters that could not be fixed, but hunger and poverty were things Europe and the world could do something about.

He admitted, however, that there was a big gulf between politicians signing cheques and people being able to cash them. "I am in the cheque business," he said.

Asked what motivated a man who could live the rock-star dream without worrying about poverty, he replied: "megalomania".

He added: "A sense of what is possible. People are dying for the most stupid of reasons. I have been in hospitals in Malawi where people are queuing up to die three in a bed - things you think you would never see in your life."

He said the push for African debt relief and tackling hunger, poverty and HIV/Aids was "a winnable war", not "wide-eyed, misty-eyed Irish nonsense".

Meanwhile, the Archbishop of Westminster, Cardinal Cormac Murphy O`Connor, urged Catholics in England and Wales to attend the Make Poverty History rally in Edinburgh on July 2.

The rally is due to take place four days before Sir Bob Geldof`s Live 8 concert and rally in the city.

Cardinal Murphy-O`Connor said: "I would like as many Catholics as possible in England and Wales to join us at the Make Poverty History rally on July 2. Such opportunities to tip the world`s scale in favour of the poor come only once or twice in a generation."

The cardinal`s Scottish counterpart, Cardinal Keith O`Brien, urged Scottish Catholics to attend the event, at which both men will speak.

Some concerns have been raised about Sir Bob`s call for 1 million people to go to the July 6 rally. However, the Catholic aid agency Cafod described the July 2 event as "a peaceful, family-friendly event where the voice of Catholics will be heard by world leaders".

A historic deal to free more than 30 poor countries from the crippling shackles of debt to the West was hailed by Bob Geldof yesterday as a `victory for millions`.
The $55 billion settlement, which will immediately benefit countries from Ethiopia and Uganda to Rwanda and Mozambique, was the beginning rather than the end, the campaigning rock star said.

He paid tribute to campaigners around the world for the deal announced by the Chancellor of the Exchequer in London yesterday, adding: `Tomorrow 280 million Africans will wake up for the first time in their lives without owing you or me a penny from the burden of debt that has crippled them and their countries for so long. Money we didn`t even know we were owed, and never wanted in the first place, and money they could never pay.`

The package agreed at a meeting of G7 finance ministers yesterday, described by Gordon Brown as `a new deal between the rich and poor of the world`, was welcomed by aid agencies as a `significant step forward` in the run-up to next month`s G8 summit at Gleneagles in Perthshire.

Brown will also signal today that a deal is almost done on climate change, the other priority for the summit, which is expected to see the West investing heavily in clean technology to reduce greenhouse gases.

Asked whether he feared corrupt African governments would squander the funds, the Chancellor said: `When there are 30,000 children dying every day, when there are 100,000 children not going to school every day, I think most parents in every country of the world would support what we`re doing.`

The deal is another example of the new working relationship between Brown and Tony Blair which first emerged when Labour`s election campaign faltered. Downing Street was quick to claim some of the credit for Blair, who went to Washington last week for talks with President George Bush.

`Tony goes to Washington and essentially ensures the door is open for the deal we wanted to make this weekend,` said a source. `It may be possible that Gordon then picks up the ball and runs with it hard, but it`s a good one-two: Tony goes to Washington essentially to make all this possible.`

Whoever takes the credit, the deal will be seen as a springboard for the summit, along with the $674 million promised by the US last week, in direct aid rather than debt relief, for stricken African countries. Washington has made clear it will have more aid to offer by the summit, although negotiations continue over how much.

In an interview to be broadcast today, Brown hinted at a deal on climate change centred on alternative sources of clean energy. He said a `huge amount of private work` was being done by Blair and others and there would be `important results`.

Yesterday`s agreement will see 18 countries offered immediate debt forgiveness, with another nine expected to qualify over 18 months once they meet targets for good governance. Others, including Eritrea and Haiti, could qualify in the future. Debt relief allows countries to invest in their own health and education by freeing them from repayments to the West.

However, aid agencies said that many more countries needed help. It was `great news for countries that will immediately benefit, but will do little to help millions in at least 40 other countries that also need 100 per cent debt relief,` said Romilly Greenhill of Action Aid.

Ministers pledged to scrap lavish export subsidies for farm products in this year`s round of World Trade Organisation talks. These handouts stop countries trading their way out of poverty.

`These countries have to make a living,` said Jonathan Glennie of Christian Aid, `or we`ll be having Live Aid Three in 20 years` time.`

The meeting also discussed commitments to ensure that all the world`s Aids sufferers receive treatment within five years. The Italian Finance Minister, Dominico Siniscalso, will consult drugs firms on `advance purchase commitments`, under which governments could encourage research by promising to pay for future treatments.

John Snow, the US Treasury Secretary, called yesterday`s deal a `milestone`. Britain has agreed to write off the whole of poor countries` debts, as Bush proposed, instead of simply meeting repayments for them; and the US agreed to find $1.75bn of new cash over the next decade to help fund the plan.

But Geldof said that campaigners should not stop until they had the `complete package demanded by the Commission on Africa`, of which he was a member, including debt cancellation, a doubling of aid and trade justice.

Live-8-Organisator Bob Geldof ist sauer auf eBay. Karten für das Benefizfestival, die über ein Preisausschreiben verlost wurden, waren kurz darauf für horrende Summen über die Auktionsplattform angeboten worden. Geldof schimpfte wüst und forderte zur Sabotage der Versteigerungen auf - mit Erfolg.




Das Live-8-Festival, das der Bekämpfung von Hunger und Armut in Afrika gewidmet ist, wartet mit einer eindrucksvollen Ansammlung von Stars auf: U2, Paul McCartney, Coldplay, Madonna und REM gehören zu den teilnehmenden Künstlern, und sogar die Mitglieder von Pink Floyd werden sich für das Konzert noch einmal zusammenfinden.

Am 2. Juli werden weltweit fünf Konzerte parallel stattfinden, um Druck auf die Politiker auszuüben, die sich am 6. Juli in Schottland zum Gipfel der führenden Industrienationen (G8) versammeln werden. In Edinburgh wird es an dem Tag, an dem der Gipfel beginnt, ein Abschlusskonzert geben.

Die Organisatoren hatten einen SMS-Wettbewerb veranstaltet, an dem mehr als zwei Millionen Menschen teilnahmen, um an Tickets für das Konzert in London zu kommen. Schon kurz darauf erschienen die Eintrittskarten für Hunderte von britischen Pfund als Angebote bei eBay.

Der Festival-Organisator nannte das Internet-Auktionshaus einen "elektronischen Zuhälter".

Sein Appell hatte Erfolg: Schon Minuten später hatten einige der Tickets laut Cnet.com Preise in Millionenhöhe erreicht. Ebay hatte zunächst abgelehnt die Auktionen von der Seite zu nehmen, lenkte dann aber doch ein. Ein Sprecher sagte : "Wir haben der eBay-Community zugehört und die Botschaft ist klar - sie wollen nicht, dass die Tickets auf der Seite verkauft werden. Wenn wir auf irgendwelche Live-8-Tickets hingewiesen werden, die wieder verkauft werden, werden wir sie herunternehmen."

In der Vergangenheit hatte eBay sich meist geweigert, den Wiederverkauf von Konzertkarten zu unterbinden. Auch Karten für die Fußballweltmeisterschaft 2006 wurden, gegen den Protest des Organisationskomitees, über die Auktionsplattform versteigert. Auch billig angebotene Bahnfahrkarten durften dort weiterverkauft werden.

Italian stars slow to join Live 8

Live 8 organiser Bob Geldof has urged Italian stars to join its Rome concert, after the headline act pulled out and another singer proved hesitant.
Rock star Vasco Rossi pulled out of the 2 July concert, saying it clashed with another gig, while Lorenzo Jovanotti asked for more details before joining.

But Geldof said Italian stars should not hesitate to take part in "the biggest concert of your life".

Bryan Adams and Deep Purple were revealed among Canada`s Live 8 line-up.

Barely mentioned

Celine Dion will perform by satellite in the multi-artist concert near Barrie, Ontario.

The Rome and Ontario concerts are among 10 global Live 8 concerts in cities including London, Philadelphia and Johannesburg aiming to highlight world poverty on 2 July, ahead of the G8 summit in Scotland.

They will be supported by a further concert in Edinburgh on 6 July, the first day of the summit.

Unlike in the UK, where Live 8 has received extensive publicity, it has been barely mentioned by the Italian media.


Bryan Adams will be one of the biggest acts at Canada`s concert
Popular Italian singer Vasco Rossi pulled out of Rome`s Circus Maximus concert, saying it clashed with a gig he was due to play in Ancona, on the other side of the Italian peninsula.

"Vasco is a great star, a really great, great artist, and I think he should be on that stage," Geldof told a news conference in Rome.

"Where`s Vasco? Vasco where are you? We want Vasco. We need Vasco," he added.

Singer Lorenzo Jovanotti, another household name in Italian pop, said he would not agree to play Live 8 until he received more information about the Rome concert.

Geldof said he would speak to Jovanotti personally. US stars Faith Hill and Tim McGraw and Italian singer Zucchero were among acts confirmed for the Rome concert so far.

The Ontario concert will be hosted by comedians Dan Akroyd and Tom Green, and will also feature Motley Crue, The Barenaked Ladies, Gordon Lightfoot, Our Lady Peace and Les Trois Accords among others.

Meanwhile U2 singer Bono - who is due to perform with U2 at Live 8`s London concert - hailed "the charity of the old Live Aid" and "the justice of the new Live 8" at a Glasgow gig on Tuesday.

There have been dinners with Brad and Jennifer and drinks with Tom Hanks and Cameron Diaz. So far, so routine for a rock star on a mission.
But the sharpest advice Bono received on how to win American hearts and minds around to his crusade on Africa came from an altogether less expected source: the legendary stock market investor Warren Buffett.

The Irish rock star, who has arguably done more than any other to ensure that the cause of Africa gets on to the agenda of the US administration, has stepped up his lobbying while on U2`s Vertigo tour in the US over the last two months to increase the pressure in the run-up to the G8 summit next month in Gleneagles.



Earlier this week he told the Guardian in Cologne how advice from Buffett, reportedly the second richest man in America, had shaped his strategy: "Warren Buffett told me, `Don`t appeal to the conscience of America, appeal to its greatness, and I think you`ll get the job done`."
Others enlisted in Bono`s crusade have included the media mogul Rupert Murdoch, the former Republican senator Jesse Helms, and figures on the religious right such as Pat Robertson and Billy Graham. The rock star described in his only newspaper interview before next month`s G8 summit how he has shared a laugh with President Bush, whom he describes as "very funny".

He has not been afraid to use his Christian faith to appeal to the American religious right, dining with Billy Graham and his son Franklin, and quoting Gospel verses to Jesse Helms, which reduced the 83-year-old Republican to tears.

Bono has spent six years trying to change the mindset of the world`s most powerful country in relation to its poorest continent, risking his own reputation and that of his band by associating with some of the most controversial figures in American public life.

At each of the 27 concert dates in the US over the last two months, he has made a direct pitch to audiences of more than 50,000 fans to sign up to the US One campaign, telling them: "My first experience of America was watching Neil Armstrong on the moon. America looked like a place where anything could happen. That`s what we`re asking Bush - to bring mankind back to earth. We have the technology, we have the resources and the knowhow, but do we have the will?"

Every night, the crowds shout back, `yes`. "Even in Arizona where the word `poverty` isn`t in the lexicon and where people tell me there are a lot of Republican whites, they were shouting yes," Bono said.

During U2`s tour, the One campaign has gone from 50,000 registrations to a million. In the last 10 days, the campaign was boosted further from the airing of a documentary of Brad Pitt on a trip to Africa with Data, the organisation Bono has co-founded (Debt, Aids, Trade, Africa).

"Brad and Jennifer [Aniston] a year ago put together a dinner for 20 great actors and asked me to speak. Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts and Cameron Diaz were all there, and they have all followed through. Sean Penn, George Clooney and P Diddy have all come to me, saying, `We see you`re there, we want to help. What can we do?`"

What has made the One campaign work, in Bono`s view, is the combination of Hollywood and what he calls "heartland". That includes the Christian music industry, which has promoted a letter-writing campaign to President Bush on Africa, urging "Christians of conscience" to get involved.

Bono has also been able to draw in help from new technology corporations such as AOL, and has described Murdoch as "very helpful".

Murdoch lobbied Karl Rove, White House chief of staff, and cleared free airtime on his Fox TV network for One campaign adverts in the run-up to the G8. "Rupert said, `I`m not going to lead the charge but if we make progress, I`ll support you,`" Bono said.

The rock star tells his American audience in media appearances from the Oprah Winfrey show to interviews with Bill O`Reilly, the outspoken commentator for Fox News, that the "stupid poverty" in which thousands of Africans die every day from a mosquito bite must be the cause of this generation, just as civil rights was the cause of an earlier generation.

Bono points to a number of breakthroughs in American policy on Africa as signs that his campaigning is paying off. The US signed up to the 100% debt relief package agreed last weekend at the G7 finance ministers` meeting in London. He also cites the fact that aid to Africa has nearly trebled under George Bush and the US in 2003 initiated a $15bn (£8.2bn) five-year programme on Aids.

He was personally credited with the dramatic public U-turn on Aids of Jesse Helms. "Christ only speaks about judgment once and it`s not about sex but about how we deal with the poor, and I quoted Matthew, `I was naked and you clothed me, I was hungry and you fed me.` Jesse got very emotional, and the next day he brought in the reporters and publicly repented about Aids. I explained to him that Aids was like the leprosy of the New Testament."

When Bono was told that there was no support from the grassroots for action on Aids in Africa, he took a choir of Ghanaian children, the US film star Ashley Judd and a Ugandan woman who was HIV positive around the mid-west in 2002, visiting seven states in a week. It was on this same tour that Bono met Warren Buffett.

Glastonbury stops for a big Moment

The music stopped at Glastonbury today as tens of thousands of people joined hands in a symbolic show of solidarity with the Make Poverty History campaign.
Bob Geldof, the organiser of next week`s Live 8 concerts, took to the main stage at 4pm to urge the crowd to join him in Edinburgh and put pressure on the G8 leaders to act on third world debt and development aid.

"I want you to individually believe you can change the condition of the most put-upon and beaten-down people on this planet," he told festival-goers.



"Grab the hand of the person beside you. Not as some big rock hippy festival thing, but because you want this to happen."
Glastonbury organiser Michael Eavis, on stage alongside Geldof told the crowd this was the first time he had ever spoken on stage on the festival. He hoped the Glastonbury Moment would make a "serious impact" on the campaign.

All performances were simultaneously stopped to allow festival-goers scattered around the vast site to take part in the hand-holding.

On the festival`s second stage - the Other stage - Senegalese musician Baaba Maal joined the band Athlete to lead the hand-holding.

"Hello England, Hello Glastonbury!" he said. "I`m talking on behalf of my whole continent."

"I`m talking to anyone who believes in the power of music. Things can be changed. I believe in the future, and I say thank you to all of you."

Athlete`s Joel Potts stepped back up to the mic. "I see a whole big load of hope. We can do something. We must go to our leaders, say `Come on, these are our brothers and sisters.`"

The singer then introduced his most personal song, Wires, written after his newborn baby was hospitalised. The crowd waved their hands, and their camera phones, in the air, and swayed gently. And so history was made.

The message in the dance village was mixed. A sombre Welsh voice could be heard intoning from the trancey G stage. "We`re all here for a reason," it declaimed over the course of two minutes. Only the most patient waited to find out what it was.

In the Pussy Parlure, a little bit of Clapham Junction in the middle of the festival, the moment went unmarked. Instead, groups of girls danced hand in hand to the Carpenters` Close to You.

The main dance tent expressed their solidarity with typical enthusiasm. "Let`s do the Glastonbury thing," said the DJ, during a pause in the music, as the dancers joined hands to a man. "Let`s get hippy and be together, and make poverty history, and you know what? Let`s fuckin` `ave it!" The music came back on, and the crowd, still holding hands, leapt into the air.

Speaking directly after the event, Michael Eavis, who has supported Oxfam through his festival for the last two decades, told reporters "we`re all feeling now that after such a long time it is time to do something different and make it happen. It`s time to get all the rich nations to get on and to sort it out once and for all."

· Latest figures reveal that 133,894 people are on the site but 2,000 have left after torrential rain turned much of the site into a mudbath yesterday.

Organisers said 468 people were treated by medics - mostly for sprains. Meanwhile, a post mortem was being carried out on a festival-goer who died yesterday evening.

Police investigating on behalf of the coroner are looking at the possibility that drink or drugs were involved in the death of the 25-year-old man from Street, Somerset, who had been seen staggering around the camp site before medics were called.

The Samaritans Festival Branch have announced that they are unable to provide onsite 24-hour emotional support to people this year - yesterday`s storms destroyed tents and equipment at their volunteers` living area.

Headlining the bill on the Pyramid stage tonight will be Coldplay, who Mr Eavis has said he is looking forward to seeing. Razorlight, Kasabian and Interpol appear on the Other stage, while Baaba Maal will be headlining the JazzWorld stage.

Live Aid-Konzert: Veranstalter fühlt sich im Stich gelassen Land Berlin und Bundestag weisen Anschuldigungen von Marek Lieberberg zurück. Senatssprecher Michael Donnermeyer: „Kritik ist unverschämt“

Sonnabend in einer Woche soll das Benefiz-Großkonzert „Live 8“ an der Siegessäule stattfinden. Nicht mehr viel Zeit, um den Streit zwischen dem Land Berlin und den Veranstaltern der Großveranstaltung von Bob Geldof zu entschärfen.

Marek Lieberberg, der von dem Musiker Bob Geldof für die Organisation des Musikfestivals in Deutschland am 2. Juli beauftragt wurde, wirft dem Land Berlin und dem Bundestag Ignoranz vor. „Die Berliner Politiker reagierten nur sehr zögerlich und wenig enthusiastisch auf meine Anfragen zur Veranstaltung“, sagte Lieberberg gestern gegenüber dem Tagesspiegel.

„Andere Städte wie Frankfurt und München würden schneller und unbürokratischer reagieren. Außerdem finden sich keine Sponsoren aus den großen deutschen Wirtschaftsunternehmen“, beklagt Lieberberg. Lieber gebe die deutsche Wirtschaft Geld für Golf- und Fußballverantaltungen aus.

„Das ist Berlin-Bashing.Lieberbergs Polemik ist unverschämt“, sagte Michael Donnermeyer, Sprecher des Berliner Senats. Die Stadt arbeite innerhalb der kurzen Zeit sehr professionell. Der Senat habe erst am 20. Mai von der Veranstaltung erfahren und sofort unbürokratisch das Genehmigungsverfahren in Gang gesetzt. „Trotz der knappen Vorbereitungszeit von fünf Wochen haben wir uns intensiv um die Organisation bemüht“, sagte Donnermeyer. 19 Bands sollen auftreten, darunter A-ha und Roxy Music.

Auch Bundestagspräsident Wolfgang Thierse (SPD) fühlt sich zu Unrecht beschuldigt. „Wir sind über die Aussagen der Konzertagentur verärgert“, sagte Wolfgang Wiemer, der Sprecher des Deutschen Bundestages. Der Bundestag sei überhaupt der falsche Adressat für Lieberbergs Vorwürfe, denn allein der Bezirk Mitte sei für die Erteilung der Genehmigung zuständig.

Anders als der in Frankfurt am Main sitzende Marek Lieberberg sieht es die Agentur Semmel Concerts, mit der zusammen Lieberberg die Benefizveranstaltung organisiert. „Ich verstehe Herrn Lieberberg nicht“, sagt Sprecherin Sabine Woeste. Die Stadt Berlin zeige sehr viel Kooperationsbereitschaft, beispielsweise mit dem Grünflächenamt. „Die an sich fantastische Idee der Veranstaltung wird so unnötig mit negativen Emotionen verbunden werden.“

„Man muss die Fehler einer Stadt benennen“, meint Marek Lieberberg dagegen. Vor allem um den Veranstaltungsort gab es im Vorfeld Probleme. „Der Veranstaltungsort ist alles andere als optimal“, betont Lieberberg. Zunächst war das Maifeld im Gespräch. Diese Idee war aber nicht zu realisieren, da am 2. Juli in der nahe gelegenen Waldbühne BB King spielt.

Danach wollten die Veranstalter auf den Platz vor dem Reichstagsgebäude. Schließlich hatten dort schon Genesis, Pink Floyd und Michael Jackson gespielt. „Die Bewässerungsanlage unter dem Rasen könnte aber beschädigt werden“, sagte Donnermeyer. Außerdem sei zu der Zeit Sitzungswoche im Parlament. Dagegen spreche auch, dass nur der Ältestenrat des Bundestages über eine Genehmigung für den Platz vor dem Reichstagsgebäude entscheiden dürfe, sagte Mitte-Sprecherin Karin Rietz.

Also einigte man sich auf den Kompromiss im Tiergarten. Die Konzertbühne soll in der Ben-Gurion-Straße stehen, Ecke Straße des 17. Juni. Laut Organisatorin Sabine Woeste spielen die Bands Richtung Siegessäule – die Zuschauer blicken Richtung Brandenburger Tor.

„Die Bühne wird viel zu schmal sein“, befürchtet Lieberberg. „Die Straße des 17. Juni mag für die Love-Parade taugen, bei einem Konzert werden die Besucher Schlange stehen.“ Auch seien Ampeln und Laternen vor der Bühne im Weg, „die für die Veranstaltung abmontiert werden müssen.“ Probleme mit dem Veranstaltungsort gibt Donnermeyer zu, „aber wir können doch nicht den Tiergarten abholzen“.

Live-Übertragung der Konzerte in Berlin, London, Paris und Rom

20 Jahre nach dem legendären "Live-Aid" Konzert findet am 2. Juli 2005 ein Musikereignis der Superlative statt. Berlin wird eine von sieben internationalen Metropolen sein, in denen an diesem Tag die Spitzen des Rock und Pop zum weltweit größten Konzertevent der Geschichte spielen werden. Weitere Konzerte finden statt in London, Paris, Rom, Ottawa, Tokio, Philadelphia und Johannesburg. Anlass für die zeitgleichen Veranstaltungen, bei denen insgesamt 100 der größten Rock- und Popstars auftreten werden, ist der bevorstehende Gipfel der G8-Regierungschefs am 6. Juli im schottischen Edinburgh, wo es um einen Schuldenerlass für die ärmsten Länder der Welt gehen soll.

Bei dem Konzert in Berlin vor dem Brandenburger Tor werden unter anderem Die Toten Hosen, BAP, die Söhne Mannheims, Chris de Burgh, Green Day, Silbermond, A-Ha, Peter Maffay, Wir sind Helden, Juli, Silbermond und Brian Wilson (Ex-Beach Boys) auftreten, Anne Will wird live auf der Bühne moderieren.
In den Londoner Hyde Park kommen Megastars wie U2, Madonna, Mariah Carey, Elton John, Paul McCartney, Pink Floyd, Annie Lennox, Sting und Robbie Williams. In den USA sind ab 18.00h (MEZ) Bon Jovi, Stevie Wonder und viele andere dabei.

Im Gegensatz zu "Live Aid" sollen dieses Mal keine Spenden für die Hungernden in Afrika gesammelt werden, alle Eintrittskarten für die Konzerte sind frei. Ziel ist es vielmehr, den Druck auf die führenden Politiker der reichen Nationen zu verstärken, um sich auf einen Schuldenerlass für die ärmsten Länder zu verständigen. "Die Zeit für Gerechtigkeit ist gekommen", sagt Bob Geldof, ehemaliger Sänger der Boomtown Rats und Organisator des Live-Aid Konzerts von 1985. Damals sammelte der Musiker mit seinem Live-Aid-Projekt über 140 Millionen Dollar Spenden für die Dritte Welt.

Critics say rock stars should be careful about what they say



With an ever growing army of celebrities getting involved in efforts to raise awareness of poverty in Africa, some have hit out against campaigns which they say are "high on celebrity octane" but low on political substance.

Critics say Bob Geldof`s Live 8 concerts make up for a somewhat unsavoury gathering of "white millionaire pop stars saving Africa`s helpless".

Consequently, factors that cause poverty, such as politics and trade, are lost in musical hype, they say, and this leads people to believe a continent`s woes can be tackled by buying a wristband or a T-shirt.

Businesswoman Charlotte di Vita, 37, founder of the Trade Plus Aid charity which provides food, medicine, housing and education to people in poor countries, believes the protestors are missing the point.

"There is niggling from some observers about using famous people, but if you asked a starving child in Sudan whether they preferred something to be done - by whatever means - or nothing at all, there would only be one answer," she says, insisting the celebrity route is legitimate.

Ms di Vita`s latest project, 21st Century Leaders, has enrolled the help of more than 200 celebrities both to raise awareness and promote a range of issues around the world, as well as to raise money for a variety of charities.

Ms di Vita plans to sell limited edition plates, cups, wristbands and t-shirts that carry the artwork famous names from the world of music, film and fashion, as well as royalty, sports people, business people and world leaders.

"The reason we chose this method was precisely because they are well-known and could get the message across to people who might otherwise not be in touch with important issues," insists Ms Di Vita who has previously created designs to raise money for fair trade projects.

"If I can raise $325,000 a year for charities from my designs for teapots, then if you put a famous person on the side you could be raising millions".

Damaging the cause

In general, critics of celebrity endorsement have no gripes with projects like Ms di Vita`s - projects that encourage people to get involved and open their wallets to support good causes.



Mr Monbiot is wary about celebrities endorsing politicians


At a higher level, though, some feel famous people`s involvement can do more harm than good by lending legitimacy to politics that, at best, falls short of making a real difference, while at the same time cementing a belief among ordinary people that the problems are being solved.


Two artists in particular are finding themselves in the firing line after having praised the recent decision by G8 leaders of the world`s richest nations to write off the debts of 18 countries.

The debt relief package and its architects were hailed by the rock artists Mr Geldof, who saw it as "a victory for the millions of people in the campaigns around the world", and Bono, who described it as "a little piece of history".

But despite their" obvious commitment to poverty reduction", the rock stars` efforts to "reach powerful people through flattery" could backfire, argues anti-poverty campaigner George Monbiot.

Mr Monbiot is angered by the conditions imposed on poor countries whose debts are written off; conditions which he sees as an "extension of Western power and influence" that is part of the problem facing Africa.

"The conditions on indebted countries are in many ways as bad as the debts are," he says.

"Geldof and Bono are in danger of turning a well thought out campaign for full and unconditional debt relief into a philanthropic campaign," Mr Monbiot says, insisting that the two are not qualified to determine whether or not world leaders should be congratulated or condemned for the debt relief package they have put together.

Political justice

But supporters of Mr Geldof and Bono are largely dismissive of such criticism, however, insisting that much has been done since 1985 when Geldof and his friend Midge Ure organised the Live Aid concert that raised £40m for famine relief in Africa.

"Geldof, Bono, and other well known figures are taking on responsibility where others, who should, are not," insists Ms di Vita.

Indeed, with the Live 8 concert being organised simultaneously in five cities on 2 July, Mr Geldof declares that this time it is "not for charity but for political justice".

"We don`t want people`s money. We want them."

Mieses Klima für Aktivisten

"Live 8" - das klingt nach planvoller Hilfe im großen Stil. Nach der anfänglichen Euphorie über Bob Geldofs Benefiz-Spektakel werden jedoch zunehmend kritische Stimmen laut. Vor allem in England ist man nicht amused: Rassismus und Ignoranz gegenüber zentralen Problemen wie Aids und Klimaschutz werden den Machern vorgeworfen.



Bob Geldof hat ein großes Herz für Afrika, vor allem für die dort hungernden Menschen. Sein Herz schrumpft allerdings, wenn es sich nicht um Notleidende handelt - vor allem, wenn sie afrikanische Künstler sind. Die wurden zu "Live 8" erst gar nicht eingeladen: Schlecht für die Quote, lautete das Urteil. Natürlich fiel das Fehlen von Afrikanern beim Afrika-Benefiz auf, Vorwürfe wurden laut: Geldof sei in Wahrheit ein weißer Rassist, seine Sorge um das Wohlergehen des Kontinents kaum mehr als die neokolonialistische Attitüde des weißen (Show-)Mannes.

Hauptsache Schwarz sehen

Für die britischen Medien ist der Streit ein gefundenes Fressen; die Auseinandersetzung um den einstigen "Live Aid"-Säulenheiligen Sir Bob wird mit überraschender Schärfe geführt. Einen der erbittertsten Angriffe gegen den "Live 8"-Macher startete der englische BBC-DJ Andy Kershaw im "The Independent". Kershaw, beim ersten "Live Aid"-Festival noch ein enger Verbündeter Geldofs, warf diesem nicht nur erhebliche Arroganz vor, sondern auch Unkenntnis des Kontinents. Ob Geldof schon mal gehört habe, dass nicht alle Afrikaner in strohbedeckten Lehmhütten leben, fragte er polemisch und fuhr fort: "Etliche Millionen Afrikaner haben Fernsehgeräte. Diese Afrikaner mögen sich genötigt sehen, einfach abzuschalten, wenn sie mit einem `Live 8` konfrontiert werden, das Afrikas größte Talente missachtet."

Schweres Kaliber, das Kershaw auffährt, aber er hat Recht: Geldof und mit ihm Bono sowie der überwiegende Rest der "Live 8"-Überzeugungstäter sind schamlose Vereinfacher. Sie reden von Afrika und den Afrikanern, verschweigen aber geflissentlich, dass der Kontinent sich nicht so einfach auf einen kleinsten gemeinsamen Nenner namens Hunger bringen lässt. Afrika ist auch das wirtschaftliche Schwergewicht Südafrika oder Botswana, ein Staat, dessen ökonomische Wachstumsrate seit der Unabhängigkeit 1966 konstant zu den höchsten der Welt zählt.

Zuerst konnten die Organisatoren die Aufregung nicht verstehen und verwiesen auf die bereits fest gebuchten schwarzen Musiker aus den USA, aus Großbritannien und aus der Karibik. Die fragwürdige Logik: Wer schwarz ist, kann auch für Afrika sprechen. Dass es trotz der gemeinsamen Hautfarbe zwischen schwarzen Afrikanern und schwarzen Briten oder Amerikanern gewaltige kulturelle Unterschiede gibt, wurde den "Live 8"-Machern gar nicht erst bewusst. Niemand käme ernsthaft auf den Gedanken, einen weißen deutschen Rockmusiker zum Sprachrohr für Australien zu erklären, nur weil dessen Bevölkerung ebenfalls mehrheitlich weiß ist.

Inzwischen hat Geldof auf die Kritik reagiert und flugs noch ein separates Konzert mit schwarzen Künstlern in einer abgelegenen Ecke Cornwalls anberaumt. Dort dürfen dann auch genuin afrikanische Musiker auf eine britische Bühne. Für Kershaw klingt das weniger nach Völkerverständigung als nach Apartheid.

Generell begegnet Großbritanniens Linke dem "Live 8"-Projekt mit gemischten Gefühlen. Verstörend wirkt für sie unter anderem die implizite Forderung nach einer weitgehenden Liberalisierung des Welthandels. Die von "Live 8"-Unterstützern erwartete Wandlung von Globalisierungsgegnern zu Globalisierungsbefürwortern macht den Großteil der britischen Linken misstrauisch.

Aber nicht nur das unverblümte Eintreten der Popstars für neoliberale Welthandelskonzepte irritiert: Einigermaßen konsterniert sind linke Intellektuelle auch darüber, mit welcher Selbstverständlichkeit neureiche Popstars auf Tuchfühlung mit den Mächtigen gehen. Man ist zu Gast bei Blair und Bush, geht bei Banken und Institutionen ein und aus und spielt im Millionärsclub Golf.

Kritikerkonzert, disharmonisch

Und dann ist da noch die immer wieder gestellte Frage, ob nicht überhaupt der ganze Ansatz von "Live 8" und der verschwisterten Kampagne "Make Poverty History" an Afrikas eigentlichen Problemen vorbei zielt. Tatsächlich werden durch die Konzerte keine Spendengelder zusammenkommen; die Veranstaltungen dienen lediglich der politischen Sensibilisierung. Claire Short, unter Blair bis zum Beginn des Irakkriegs Ministerin für internationale Entwicklungspolitik, hat generelle Zweifel. "Sicher, die Menschen werden die Konzerte genießen", sagte sie der BBC, "weil da berühmte Musiker auftreten. Aber inwieweit diese Konzerte dazu beitragen sollen, den Hunger in der Welt und in Afrika zu bekämpfen, ist mir immer noch nicht klar."

Für die Autoren des Reports "Africa - Up in Smoke", eine Koalition von 18 Hilfs- und Umweltorganisationen von Oxfam über Greenpeace bis hin zu Action Aid, ist es hingegen klar, dass die Konzerte nichts bringen werden, weil das Problem des Kontinents völlig außer Acht gelassen wird: die Klimakatastrophe. Der Bericht konstatiert unter anderem, dass bereits jetzt 14 afrikanische Länder gravierende Wasserprobleme haben und in den nächsten 25 Jahren weitere elf hinzukommen werden.

Schützenhilfe für ihre Argumentation erhalten die Autoren von Jeffrey Sachs. Der Professor, den die "New York Times" zum derzeit bedeutendsten Ökonomen der Welt erklärte, stimmt nicht nur mit ihnen in allen wesentlichen Erkenntnissen überein, er weist auch auf eine weitere Katastrophe hin: Aids. Die Viruskrankheit dezimiert die junge, arbeitsfähige, dynamische und kreative Bevölkerung Afrikas - und dies in einem Maße, dass mittlerweile sämtliche Volkswirtschaften südlich der Sahara ernsthaft gefährdet sind.

Die verheerenden Folgen von Klimakatastrophe und Aids-Epidemie für den afrikanischen Kontinent werden sich mit ein bisschen Schuldenerlass und ein wenig mehr Freihandel kaum lindern lassen. Die Bereitschaft der G8-Staaten, mit wirklich einschneidenden Maßnahmen auf die Klimakatastrophe zu reagieren, ist nach wie vor eher gering, wie die beharrliche Weigerung von Afrika-Freund George Bush, das Kyoto-Protokoll zu unterzeichnen, beweist.

Die "Live 8"-Stars sehen über diese Aspekte der Krise lieber hinweg. Für die Japaner, die keine große Tradition mit dem Engagement der Musikindustrie haben, ist das fast etwas Neues.
In London werden 200.000 Menschen im Hydepark erwartet, vielleicht doch nicht schlecht, nicht hingeflogen zu sein. Ich überlege, ob ich nachher mal zum 17. Juni rüberwackel. Allerdings hab ich gehört, daß in dem Schlauch vor der Bühne die ersten 100 Meter für die verlosten Tickets vorbehalten sind, also wird man nicht viel sehen können, bzw. nur über die Großleinwände was mitbekommen. Vielleicht ist´s an der Glotze besser.

Gestern wohnte man in einer "atomfreien Zone", heute knüpft man Laken für die "Aktion gegen Armut" oder rettet rockend mit "Live 8" die Welt. Doch wem nutzen solche symbolischen Aktivitäten? Vor allem ihren Erfindern.

Wir leben in aufregenden Zeiten. Einerseits schreitet die Globalisierung voran und verbreitet ein Gefühl der Ohnmacht, des Ausgeliefertseins an unkontrollierbare Mächte, andererseits war es noch nie so einfach, gegen den Strom zu schwimmen, Sand im Getriebe der Gesellschaft zu sein. Es fing an mit kleinen Aufklebern, die man an den Türen der Wohngemeinschaften anbringen und damit progressive Haltung demonstrierten konnte, ohne einen Fuß vor die Tür setzen zu müssen: "Atomwaffenfreie Zone".

Dann kamen die Sticker der Tierfreunde: "Ich bremse auch für Tiere!" Mit der deutschen Einheit entwickelte sich eine neue Protestkultur. Auf der einen Seite die Glatzen, die "nationalbefreite Zonen" durchzusetzen versuchten, ohne "Fidschis und Kanaken", auf der anderen die guten Deutschen, die händchenhaltend Menschenketten bildeten, um gegen Ausländerfeindlichkeit zu demonstrieren. Es gab Tage, da konnte man zwischen Berchtesgaden und Flensburg kaum über die Straße gehen, ohne von einer Menschenkette aufgehalten zu werden.

Auch der erste Irak-Krieg förderte die angewandte Kreativität. Als alliierte Bomber Ziele im Irak anflogen, hängten deutsche Friedensfreunde weiße Bettlaken von ihren Balkonen, um nicht versehentlich getroffen zu treffen. Angebote für Individualisten ergänzten die vielen Mahnwachen: Fasten für den Frieden, Saufen für den Frieden und Hupen gegen den Krieg. Und nun ist die Armut dran. Ihr soll der Garaus gemacht werden, und die Art, wie das geschehen soll, erinnert an die Menschenketten gegen die Fremdenfeindlichkeit und die Bettlaken gegen die Bomben. Es ist quasi die symbiotische Verbindung beider Protestformen.

Ideenreichtum für die Armen

Am 2. Juli wird sich "das längste weiße Band Deutschlands" von der Spitze des Wetzlarer Doms durch die Wetzlarer Altstadt "schlängeln". Bei der "Aktion gegen Armut" am ersten internationalen "White-Band-Day" werden "Hunderte Banner und Bettlaken aneinander" geknüpft, um darauf aufmerksam zu machen, "dass täglich 24.000 Menschen an den Folgen von Hunger und Unterernährung sterben". Nicht nur in Wetzlar, wo das Aktionsbündnis "Deine Stimme gegen Armut" seinen Sitz hat, überall in Deutschland werden sich weiße Bänder schlängeln, die am 10. September, beim zweiten "White-Band-Day", in Berlin zu einem superlangen weißen Band zusammengesetzt werden.

Zwischen dem 2. Juli und dem 10. September liegen 70 Tage. In dieser Zeit werden, wenn die Ausgangszahl von 24.000 täglich stimmt, 1.680.000 Menschen an den Folgen von Hunger und Unterernährung sterben, völlig unabhängig davon, ob die Aktivisten der "Aktion gegen Armut" weiße Bänder aneinander knoten, sich einen Sonnenbrand im Freibad holen oder allabendlich fürstlich tafeln. Freilich, was immer sie tun, sie werden, im Gegensatz zu den Hungernden, denen die Aktion gilt, nicht nur satt, sondern auch mit dem guten Gefühl ins Bett sinken, etwas gegen die Not in der Welt getan zu haben. Man könnte die ganze Übung auch anders nennen: "Brot für die Welt - aber die Butter bleibt hier!" Oder: "Das weiße Band der Idiotie".

Der Punkt, der auf der Agenda der "Aktion gegen Armut" ganz oben ansteht, ist ein "Schuldenerlass" für die armen und verschuldeten Länder in der Dritten Welt. Ein wenig irritiert dabei nur, dass die Finanzminister der G-8-Staaten bereits beschlossen haben, 37 armen Staaten ihre Schulden zu erlassen, weitere werden folgen. Was sich aber noch nicht bis Wetzlar herumgesprochen hat: Schuldenerlass bedeutet nicht, dass die Schulden einfach gestrichen werden, sondern, dass sich die G-8-Staaten verpflichten, die Tilgung und die Zinszahlungen zu übernehmen. Da wird der deutsche Steuerzahler jubeln, wenn er begriffen hat, dass auf ihn bis zum Jahre 2015 Extraausgaben von fast einer Milliarde Euro zukommen.

Wer instrumentalisiert wen?

Das sei "ein guter Anfang", freute sich der südafrikanische Erzbischof Desmond Tutu, und die rund 70.000 Besucher eines "U2"-Konzerts in der Schalker Arena jubelten, als Sänger Bono den eben bekannt gewordenen Beschluss der G-8-Staaten verkündete. Und so kommt es in diesen Tagen überall zu einem solidarischen Schulterschluss zwischen Politik und Popmusik, wobei es so aussieht, als würden die Musiker die Politiker vor sich hertreiben - in einen Kampf gegen die Armut, für eine Welt, in der es gerecht zugeht, niemand hungern muss und alle Kinder CD-Player haben, um die Live-Mitschnitte der Benefiz-Konzerte gegen die Armut zu hören. Werden die Musiker schaffen, was den Polikern nicht gelungen ist? Fest steht: Man kann nicht genau sagen, wer wen instrumentalisiert.

Vermutlich handelt es sich um ein Geschäft auf Gegenseitigkeit. Bono von U2 besucht den EU-Kommissionspräsidenten Jose Manuel Barroso in Brüssel und fordert ihn auf, "für die Ärmsten der Welt die Entwicklungshilfe spürbar zu erhöhen". Barroso nimmt sich für Bono frei und lässt sich mit ihm fotografieren. Dann geht ein Bild um die Welt, auf dem der Pop-Musiker und der EU-Manager zu sehen sind, wie sie in heiterer Verbundenheit mit den Hungerleidern in aller Welt das V-Zeichen für die Fotografen machen. Die dazugehörige Geschichte ist in sechs Worten ausführlich erzählt. "Rocksänger Bono kämpft für die Armen".

Das tun inzwischen viele. Fast jeder Star und jedes Sternchen, von Britney Spears bis Jeanette Biedermann, von Steven Spielberg bis Veronika Ferres hat entweder eine eigene Stiftung zur Unterstützung notleidender Kinder in der Dritten Welt oder er bzw. sie reist im Auftrag wohltätiger Organisationen durch Krisen- und Katastrophengebiete. Was immer die mobilen Sozialarbeiter aus dem Show-Business machen, in einem Punkt sind sich alle einig: Vor allem in Afrika sterben die Menschen an Aids, Dürre und Hunger, "weil sie zu arm sind" ( Bob Geldof).

Kontraproduktive Spenden

Das ist der Ausgangspunkt aller Überlegungen - und das Ziel aller Aktivitäten. Dabei sind sich alle Ökonomen, die sich mit der Wirtschaft in den Entwicklungsländern beschäftigen, einig: Es kommt nicht auf die Höhe der Hilfszahlungen, sondern vor allem darauf an, wie ein Land regiert wird, wie groß das Ausmaß der Korruption ist, ob die Regierung die Geschäfte zu ihrem Nutzen betreibt oder freien Handel ermöglicht.

In totalitär geführten Staaten, in Ländern, die gegeneinander Krieg führen oder im ständigen Bürgerkrieg existieren, sind Spenden ausgesprochen kontraproduktiv. Sie ermöglichen es der Regierung, die Ressourcen für ihre Waffengänge einzusetzen, während die Bevölkerung von ausländischen Hilfsorganisationen versorgt wird. So werden die Zustände nur zementiert.

Wenn Bono & Co. den Hungernden und Unterdrückten wirklich helfen wollten, dann müssten sie alles daran setzen, ihre "Live 8" Konzerte in der sudanesischen Provinz Darfour zu veranstalten oder, noch besser, in Harare, der Hauptstadt von Simbabwe, wo Robert Mugabe regiert, der sein Land beharrlich in den Ruin treibt. Nachdem er die weißen Farmer enteignet hat, wodurch sich die Lebensbedingungen der schwarzen Landarbeiter nicht verbessert haben, ist er jetzt im Begriff, die städtische Opposition zu erledigen. Mugabe ließ ganze Stadtviertel platt machen und Tausende verhaften - ohne dass dies in Europa mehr als ein müdes "Der, schon wieder!" ausgelöst hätte. Da wäre ein Super-Popkonzert das Richtige, um die Aufmerksamkeit der Welt auf die Zustände in einem Land zu lenken, das unter hausgemachter Gewalt leidet.

Aber Europa mag es eher symbolisch. Am 12. Juni war der "Welttag gegen Kinderarbeit". Er ging ebenso unbemerkt vorbei wie der "Tag des Schlafes" eine Woche später. Der "Welttag gegen Kinderarbeit" sollte die geschätzten 18o bis 250 Millionen Kinder ins Licht rücken, die für wenig Geld unter schrecklichen Bedingungen schuften müssen. In Indien z. B. arbeiten viele Kinder in Steinbrüchen.

Und zwei Drittel aller Grabsteine in Deutschland werden aus Indien eingeführt. Nun soll ein Verein gegründet werden - Vorsitz: Norbert Blüm, Ex-Arbeitsminister -, der die aus Indien eingeführten Grabsteine darauf überprüfen will, ob an ihrer Herstellung Kinder unter 14 Jahren beteiligt waren. Keine leichte Aufgabe angesichts der Tatsache, dass nur wenige Kinderarbeiter einen gültigen Ausweis mit sich führen, der ihr Alter verrät.

Für die Unbedenklichkeitserklärung der Grabsteine soll eine Gebühr von drei Prozent des Preises erhoben werden. Damit werden dann die Kontrolleure des Vereins bezahlt, die die Steinbrüche überprüfen. Wie viele Kontrolleure braucht man für ein Land, das neunmal so groß ist wie die Bundesrepublik, in dem eine Milliarde Menschen leben und wo es mehr Steinbrüche gibt als Norbert Blüm Haare auf dem Kopf hat?

Früher, bevor die Künstler und die Polit-Rentner die Sache in die Hand nahmen, hieß es: Entwicklungshilfe ist Hilfe zur Selbsthilfe. Das stimmt noch immer. Die Entwicklungshelfer helfen - vor allem sich selbst.

A nation on the move: thousands prepare to march and dance

The big white bus - it had to be big because so many people wanted to get on, and it had to be white because that`s the colour of the Make Poverty History alliance - left London at 9.30 yesterday morning full of hope and rucksacks.
It headed north on a day when the whole of Britain seemed to be preparing to move, with half a million or more people expected to be at a G8 protest, concert or demonstration today. Even as some 100,000 people from the south of England set off to the north to save the world, another 100,000 were believed to be travelling to the capital in the hope of hearing Bob Geldof and Madonna at the Hyde Park Live 8 gig. To add to the confusion, thousands of African music lovers were heading to the Eden Project in Cornwall and 30,000 people were expected at the Gay Pride parade in London.




"It`s a right merry go round," said Jim Francis, a bus driver waiting to pick people up at King`s Cross. "People don`t know if they`re coming or going".
Demonstrators heading to Scotland faced a long day. Ten hours on the motorway followed by a sleepless night on a hard floor in some Edinburgh hall, a short walk and then 10 hours back.

Fay Miah, a young graduate who had given up a day`s holiday to go north, said: "I`m a bit cynical about what the world leaders will actually do next week, but yes, I am sure we will make a difference just by going there."

Churches and charity groups yesterday said that they were confident that the Edinburgh anti-poverty march would go as planned, with the march around the city designed so that people would be completing the route as others set off, giving a sense of a great white bandage around the city - or total confusion.

But privately they were not certain that everyone would want to hear 25 faith, trade union and other speakers, who most people had never heard of. Of course, they`d prefer rockers, but they`ll all be somewhere else," said one charity worker who asked not to be named.

As the first protesters began arriving in Edinburgh yesterday, some shops in the city were already boarding up their windows. H&M and a local jewellers were among the first to batten down the hatches. In Stirling, the Hor-i-zone alternative living space was also beginning to fill with protesters.

The eco-village is attracting anarchist visitors from as far away as the US and New Zealand. The camp is as close to the Gleneagles summit as organisers are prepared to allow protesters.

But yesterday there was some good news for the protesters, who claimed they were being kept away from the summit to silence their voices. After weeks of argument, the police and local authority finally agreed to allow them to march within 500m of the five-star hotel, rather than containing them in a public park in the nearby village of Auchterarder.

"This is the biggest populist mobilisation of people that we have ever known," said Martin Kirk of Save the Children Fund. "We alone have given out over 100,000 white wristbands. More than a million people have signed up to the Make Poverty History website. It`s far bigger than the summit in Birmingham 10 years ago."

On board a train chartered to take demonstrators to Scotland, the mood was equally bullish. "We won`t be marching calling on the G8 to do nice things, we`re marching against the G8," said Guy Taylor, a leader of Globalise Resistance. "The G8 is only united through wealth - and it only meets to defend that common interest."

Richard Moth travelled to Scotland despite being severely injured when police raided the school in Genoa where he was staying during the 2001 G8 summit. "I`m here for the same reasons I went to Genoa - I feel I have to oppose the neo-liberal policies that are privatising our world".

Even as some fans slept on the streets in the hope of getting London Live 8 tickets and the three spires of Lichfield cathedral in Staffordshire were yesterday bound together in a white band and a bell tolled every three seconds to symbolise the 30,000 children who die from poverty every day, anticapitalists, trade unionists, churches, charities, environmentalists, school children, and others made statements about the need for urgent action on Africa, climate, trade and poverty.

"We are a movement of movements. For once we are all united," said Carlo, a Spanish student at Euston station who had set off two days ago from Madrid. Watched by a handful of police officers, he was waiting with 600 others for a train chartered by Globalise Resistance. More than half of the travellers were from mainland Europe.

"I only hope that we don`t get beaten up like we did at the G8 meeting in Genoa," said Francine, a French teacher who had travelled overnight. "We will be on the march but we are also protesting against the policies of the G8," said Luigi, a Sicilian student studying for a physics masters in London.

"I cannot imagine no trouble, not tomorrow on the main march but later in the week at the [Faslane] nuclear base or at the wire [fence]," said Pixie, a Londoner who had just returned from travelling round the world. "We will be marching every day for or against something or other."

Cardinals join Edinburgh G8 march Jul 2 2005



Campaigners on the Make Poverty History march in Edinburgh are being joined by two Cardinals of the Roman Catholic Church.

Archbishop of Westminster Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O`Connor, and Archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh Cardinal Keith O`Brien, will be alongside thousands of people protesting ahead of Wednesday`s G8 summit in nearby Gleneagles.

They said they were joining the protest in order to send a message to the G8 leaders that they must deliver on the Millennium Development Goals agreed by the United Nations in 2000, including the halving of extreme poverty by 2015.

Cardinal Murphy-O`Connor, head of Catholics in England and Wales, said that achieving the Goals depended on "moral will" from the leaders of the world`s most powerful states to fulfil "one of the most serious pledges that has ever been made".

He told BBC Radio 4`s Today programme: "The point about what needs to be done is not can it be done, but will it be done? It is the moral will, I am quite clear about that.

"People like myself and Cardinal O`Brien are not only here because we want to join in the march, but also because we are the leaders of our churches and with other Christian leaders, we are saying this is something that is at the heart of the Gospel, to be on the side of the poor.

"People want to hear this and they want people like us to show that we really do care about this issue.

"We are going to do everything we can to fulfil the Millennium Goals. They can be fulfilled, there is no question about that, and yet they are not being fulfilled.

"What we want to say to governments is `Fulfil them. Fulfil your pledge`. This pledge between peoples and governments is one of the most serious pledges that has ever been made, and therefore governments have got to listen."

Cardinal O`Brien, leader of Scotland`s Catholics, told the programme: "The purpose of this gathering is to bring to the attention of the G8 leaders the need for something more, that governments must act to alleviate some of the terrible, dire poverty that does exist around the world, and especially in Africa."

Hätten stattdessen die 1.000.000 Besucher ihre Kosten für Anfahrt, Übernachtung und Verpflegung von sagen wir mal 100 €/Person gespendet, wäre es vermutlich ein grösserer
finanzieller Erfolg geworden. So wären theoretisch 100 Millionen Euro zusammengekommen. Hätte aber natürlich kaum einer gemacht.

Befürchte, dass wie so oft, die Menschen ein Erlebniss suchen, aber nicht die Hilfsbereitschaft im Vordergrund steht.

Das ist eine ähnliche Solidarität wie bei den geklegentlichen Promi-Charity-Aktionen, wo Trikots, Bälle
oder sonstiges nutzlosen Zeug aus Prommibiesitz versteigert wird. Das Geld für die Wohltätigkeit muss
dann aber immer ein Anderer aufbringen, nämlich der Käufer.

Respekt aber vor Jenen die für Anderer ihre eigenes Geld
auf den Tisch legen. Der viel gescholtene Bill Gates stellt beispielsweise nicht sein T-Shirt zu wohltätigen Zwecken zur Verfügung, sondern hat bereits 26 Millarden Dollar in eine Stiftung eingebracht, welche jedes Jahr Projekte mit 1,2 Millarden Dollar in der "Dritten Welt" fördert. Das ist mehr als die Weltgesundheistorganisation (0,8 Millarden) jährlich zur Verfügung hat. Würden die
100 Artist von heute auch die hälfte Ihres Vermögens opfern? Wohl nur sehr wenige. Aber singen kostet ja nix.

sehr professionell und engagiert, aber diese Spektakel
wird leider wohl nix bewegen.

Da können manche Sternchen mal auf eine grosse Bühne
(mit allen positiven Folgen für die eigenen Ton-Scheiben), und
alte Stars nochmal eine kleine Blüte erleben. Und Alle
hinter, auf und vor der Bühne haben ein reines Gewissen.

Habe nix gegen gute Konzerte, und finde auch Hilfe gut,
nur dass Hilfe oft nur noch gegen Gegenleistung und mit
grossem TamTam möglich scheint ist sehr schade.

Finde die Tatsache, das es jemandem schlecht geht, ist
Grund genug zu helfen, auch ohne das dabei jemand im
Hintergrund seine Liedchen singt.

"Ladies and gentlemen, it`s two o`clock. Welcome to the greatest rock concert in the world." And thus, a few minutes after 2pm, Live 8 began simultaneously at venues in London, Paris, Rome and Berlin.
Backstage, Bob Geldof said:" Everything that`s rock `n` roll is ever meant to be is happening now." He admitted that he only finally relaxed once the concert got underway. "There`s nothing more to do now - it`s either crap or it`s great and so far it`s great," he told reporters a couple of hours into the blockbusting event.



First off was Paul McCartney who opened proceedings in Hyde Park with a rendition of Sergeant Pepper`s Lonely Hearts Club Band, backed by musicians dressed in the iconic Sgt Pepper brightly coloured uniforms. Bono and U2 then took over, performing It`s a Beautiful Day with lyrics especially customised for the event. Overhead, grey clouds gathered, but the crowd greeted the performers enthusiastically.
Following U2 were Coldplay, who opened with In My Place. Among the spectators were Chris Martin`s wife, Gwyneth Paltrow and their daughter Apple. Richard Ashcroft sang his best known song, Bitter Sweet Symphony, backed by Coldplay. Martin sneaked in a small tribute to Status Quo - who opened Live Aid 20 years previously, singing a few words from their song Rocking All Over The World. The singer called Bob Geldof "a hero" and thanked the organiser, referring to those who were cynical as `stupid`. Their brief set ended with Fix You. Elton John performed next, closing with a duet with Pete Doherty. The two sang Children of the Revolution.

Geldof then made a brief appearance, to introduce Bill Gates as "the greatest philanthropist of our age." Gates - the richest man in the world - and his wife Melinda have given $5bn (£2.82 bn) towards relieving poverty. Gates paid tribute to Geldof and the event`s other organisers. "I believe that if you show people the problems and you show them the solutions they will be moved to act," he said.

"I have learned that success depends on knowing what works and bringing resources to the problem. We know what to do. The generosity we are asking for can save millions of lives. Some day in the future all people no matter where they are born will be able to lead a healthy life."

Dido was up next. The North Londoner sang White Flag, and then was joined on stage by Sengalese singer Youssou N`Dour to sing her breakthrough hit, Thank You. The two then performed N`Dour`s 1994 smash hit Seven Seconds. Both singers will be playing later at the Eden Project in Cornwall, where over 4,000 people are watching some of Africa`s best musicians. Acts on the bill there include Thomas Mapfumo from Zimbabwe and his group the Blacks Unlimited, dynamic female vocalist Maryam Mursal from Somalia, and Senegalese hip hop group Daara J.

Eden`s organiser Peter Gabriel spoke earlier of his `disappointment` that Geldof could not have made more space for black artists on the bill at Hyde Park. "I am very happy that we are here today," he said. "It was important that there was the opportunity for African voices to be heard." Guest presenters at the Cornwall event include Angelina Jolie.

Eden`s chief executive Tim Smit said: "What is so exciting about hosting this is that what has been created is a cultural palette and people can get a chance to hear a wide range of sounds of Africa. It is very moving and emotional and I hope it catches the mood of the time."

At Hyde Park, Stereophonics followed Dido, and then Ricky Gervais introduced REM. Gervais reprised his famous dance routine from BBC TV series The Office, for "the first and last time only" to the delight of the crowd.

Thousands of people gathered in city centres in Manchester, Wrexham, Cardiff, Birmingham, Liverpool, Hull, Leeds, Gateshead, Bournemouth, Plymouth, Belfast, Inverness and the Channel Islands where screens had been erected to allow people to watch the event free of charge.

Ms Dynamite was followed by Keane, who played Everybody`s Changing and Somewhere Only We Know, to roars of approval.

Razorlight frontman Johnny Borrell chatted backstage before his band`s set. "I`m not nervous," he told reporters. "I can`t wait to get out there. It`s great to be here, taking part in something that needs to be done," he said. Borrell is too young to remember the original Live Aid concert of 1985. "This is not about what happened 20 years ago," he said, "This is about today. My message to the G8 leaders is that this is their chance to make a lot of difference in the world and to come back fulfilling their promises rather than coming back with empty promises. This is their chance to show the world politics is not just showbusiness for ugly people."

At 5pm Bob Geldof came on stage to announce that over three billion people were watching the event. Over in Philadelphia, events were just beginning, with Will Smith on stage to open the US`s Live 8 concert. The actor and singer introduced live link-ups with the crowds in Berlin, Paris and Canada. He spoke of a Declaration of `Interdependence` and urged the crowds to help end world poverty. "Every three seconds, somebody`s son, somebodys` daughter, somebody`s future is gone. Dead" he said. "With a stroke of a pen eight men can make a difference and end the misery of millions of people."

As the music began in Hyde Park earlier this afternoon, thousands of people were still waiting to get in. Along Bayswater Road, to the north of the park, leading up to the main entrance, fans filled the breadth of the road and whistled and cheered at the police to be allowed through.

Many, frustrated at still being outside, clung to railings around the park to see what was going on inside.

Meanwhile, a tout was seen trying to sell a ticket to the event for £200. One man, who did not wished to be named, and was carrying around a sign saying: "genuine music fan" in the hope of buying a ticket, said he would not pay that much as he was only prepared to give £20 or £30.

The first two of the 10 worldwide Live 8 concerts - the world`s biggest music event - had begun earlier in Johannesburg, and in Tokyo, where around 10,000 people were watching to a lineup including Bjork and McFly.

The Live 8 Concerts will run for 19 hours around the world. The day`s final note of music will come from Canadian concert venue Molson Park, Barrie, at 1am tomorrow (British Standard Time); the first concert kicked off this morning in Tokyo at 6am and finished 2pm. In the US, Philadelphia`s Live 8 concert at the Benjamin Franklin Parkway will feature Live 8 performers from 5pm (BST) until 11pm. Russia`s Live 8 Concert in Red Square, Moscow runs from 5pm to 8.30pm, while South Africa`s concert at Mary Fitzgerald Square, Newtown, Johannesburg, began at 11.45am and will close at 6.30pm.

The world music gig at Cornwall`s Eden Project opened an hour before Hyde Park, and will run until at 11pm.

Billions of television viewers around the world are expected to watch today`s concerts, with other gigs taking place in Philadelphia, Tokyo, Berlin, Paris, Rome, Johannesburg, Moscow, Barrie (Canada) and the Eden Project in Cornwall. The Hyde Park concert is being broadcast to 85% of the world`s population.

The fans in Hyde Park will see a lineup including Madonna, Coldplay, Sir Elton John, Joss Stone, Robbie Williams and U2. Special guest presenters are to include Brad Pitt - who will be introducing Annie Lennox, David Beckham, introducing Robbie Williams, Ricky Gervais, and Little Britain stars Matt Lucas and David Walliams. Kofi Annan, Cat Deeley, Davina McCall, Chris Evans, Harvey Weinstein and the BBC`s political editor Andrew Marr were among the onlookers, while Jonathan Ross was introducing the live television coverage.

The aim of the concerts is to raise awareness of poverty in developing nations in the run-up to the G8 summit, which takes place in Gleneagles on July 6.

"This is without doubt a moment in history where ordinary people can grasp the chance to achieve something truly monumental and demand from the eight world leaders at G8 an end to poverty," the event`s organiser, Bob Geldof, said.

"The G8 leaders have it within their power to alter history. They will only have the will to do so if tens of thousands of people show them that enough is enough. By doubling aid, fully cancelling debt, and delivering trade justice for Africa, the G8 could change the future for millions of men, women and children."

Geldof himself will be performing at the Hyde Park concert. The former Boomtown Rats singer will perform the classic I Don`t Like Mondays.

The former Beatle will close proceedings with The Long and Winding Road, urging people to travel to Edinburgh for the Long Walk To Justice. Surprise guests were also expected to appear on stage, with George Michael and Sir Mick Jagger rumoured to be among those participating in the grand finale.

Meanwhile at the Eden Project, African artists including Youssou N`Dour, Mariam Mursal and Angelique Kidjo will perform.

Police today urged those without tickets to stay away from Hyde Park, and advised motorists to stay away from central London. More than 1,000 Metropolitan police officers will be on duty, and all police leave in the capital has been cancelled.

Officers are also policing the annual Gay Pride march, which is taking place this morning and likely to attract around 30,000 people.

Scenes from Live 8
Concerts are taking place around the world to put pressure on political leaders to tackle poverty in Africa.
The biggest, in Hyde Park in London, opened with Sir Paul McCartney singing with U2 in front 200,000 people.

Shows are being held in Philadelphia, Paris, Johannesburg, Rome, Berlin, Moscow and Barrie, in Canada.

An estimated TV audience of up to five billion people is watching. The events come ahead of next week`s G8 summit of world leaders in Scotland.

The former Beatle joined with U2 to sing Sgt Pepper`s Lonely Hearts Club Band, which opens with the words: "It was 20 years ago today...", a reference to the 1985 Live Aid show.

In a speech, singer Bono said: "This is our moment, this is our time, this is our chance to stand up for what is right.

"We are not looking for charity, we are looking for justice."

Microsoft tycoon Bill Gates joined Bob Geldof on stage to lend his support to the event.

`Fairer trade` demand


UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, in London to give his support to Live 8, said: "This is really a United Nations. The whole world has come together in solidarity with the poor.

"On behalf of the poor, the voiceless and the weak I say thank you."

In Philadelphia, actor Will Smith linked up live to the other concerts around the world.

"We are all in this together. We are calling on the eight most powerful leaders in the world to end this tragedy of poverty," he said.

The concerts were organised by Geldof to promote the campaign to get the G8 nations to drop the debt burden of the poorest countries.

More than 100,000 people also took to the streets of Edinburgh to show their support for the Make Poverty History Campaign.

In an open letter published in UK newspapers, Geldof said the global audience for the events was "the largest mandate for action in history" to end the poverty "killing 50,000 each day".

However, critics have said the campaign is over-simplifying the issue of global poverty.

Some anti-poverty charities and African leaders believe the event is too focused on money, rather than the problems of unequal trade, and good governance in Africa itself.

But Geldof told BBC News: "There`s one plan. It`s debt; trade and aid and governance. Prime, pump an economy, create good government and we`ll get people out of poverty. That`s what this is about. We`ll jump if you jump and we`re all jumping on behalf of those who can`t even crawl."

The main events taking place as the Live 8 concerts begin around the world:

Japanese act Rise kicked off the first show in Tokyo, which also included Icelandic singer Bjork, UK boy band McFly and US rockers Good Charlotte. Some 10,000 fans attended, although the arena was only half full.

Thousands are gathered in Johannesburg`s Mary Fitzgerald Square for artists including 4Peace Ensemble and Jabu Khanyile.

In the UK, a concert featuring African artists is taking place at the Eden Project, an ecological centre in Cornwall. Senegalese performer Youssou N`Dour will perform here, as well as at Live 8 in London and Paris. Hollywood star Angelina Jolie has appeared on stage, but attendances so far appear low, with up to 5,000 people there.

James Brown, Dido, The Cure and Craig David are on the bill at the Palais De Versailles, Paris. Green Day, Chris De Burgh and Roxy Music are playing at Berlin`s Brandenburg Gate.

Circus Maximus in Rome is playing host to Zucchero, Tim McGraw and Duran Duran.

Will Smith hosts the Philadelphia show, which features Stevie Wonder, Kanye West, Destiny`s Child and Jay-Z. Canadian performer Bryan Adams will appear at his country`s Live 8 show in Barrie, Ontario

Unter dem Jubel von 150.000 Menschen haben Paul McCartney und Bono am Samstag das Londoner Live-8-Konzert eröffnet. Sie spielten gemeinsam "Sgt. Pepper`s Lonely Hearts Club Band", das mit der Zeile "It was 20 years ago today..." begann. Damit spielten sie auf die ersten Live-Aid-Konzerte vor fast genau 20 Jahren an.

Mit dem weltweiten Konzertmarathon von Tokio bis Toronto will Organisator Bob Geldof wieder auf das Schicksal des afrikanischen Kontinents verweisen.

"Wir wollen kein Mitleid, wir wollen Gerechtigkeit", sagte Bono den im Hyde Park versammelten Zuschauern. "Wir können nicht alle Probleme lösen, aber wenn wir sie lösen können, müssen wir das tun." U2 spielte die Songs "Beautiful Day" und "One". Coldplay folgten mit ihrem Auftritt.

Das erste Live-8-Konzert begann am Mittag (Ortszeit) in einem Stadion am Rand von Tokio. Etwa 10.000 Menschen jubelten der isländischen Sängerin Björk und weiteren Bands zu. Allerdings traf das Konzert in Japan nur auf geringeres Interesse. Die Halle war mit 10.000 Menschen nur etwas zur Hälfte gefüllt. Die Organisatoren zeigten sich trotzdem zufrieden. Es sei wichtig, dass das Land teilnehme, da es zu den acht führenden Industriestaaten (G-8) gehöre.

In Johannesburg bildete der sambische Sänger Lindiwe den Auftakt des Konzerts. Etwa 5.000 Menschen jubelten den Künstlern zu und forderten auf Plakaten Gerechtigkeit für Afrika. Das Konzert in Johannesburg wurde geplant, nachdem Kritiker erklärt hatten, es seien nicht genug afrikanische Künstler an Live 8 beteiligt.

Die Punkband die Toten Hosen eröffnete mit einem furiosen Auftritt den Berliner Teil der Live-8-Konzerte. Über 150.000 Besucher feierten auf der Straße des 17. Juni, wie die Veranstalter erklärten. "Es ist kein Rockkonzert. Es ist eine Demonstration", sagte der Sänger der Gruppe, Campino, unter dem Jubel der Zuschauer. Er bezog sich damit auf den Beginn des G-8-Gipfels am Mittwoch in Schottland.

In einem offenen Brief forderte Geldof die Teilnehmer des Gipfels auf, die Welt nicht zu enttäuschen. Der irische Rockmusiker forderte eine Zusage über 25 Milliarden Dollar Hilfe für Afrika.

Für halbherzige Maßnahmen werde es keinen Applaus geben, schrieb Geldof in dem Brief, der am Samstag in britischen Zeitungen erschien. Er hatte "das größte Konzert aller Zeiten" versprochen.

"Africa Calling" in St. Austell

In Rom spielten die Stars der italienischen Musikszene auf, unter ihnen Jovanotti, Pino Daniele und Elisa. Das Konzert im Circus Maximus wurde unter der brennenden Nachmittagssonne eröffnet von Francesco De Gregori. Ihm sollten Duran Duran und Zucchero folgen.

Duran Duran war eine von sieben Bands, die bereits vor 20 Jahren dabei waren. Der römische Bürgermeister Walter Veltroni sprach vom größten Konzert in der Geschichte der italienischen Musik.

In St. Austell im Südwesten Englands traten afrikanische Sänger und Gruppen aus 14 Ländern auf, unter ihnen der senegalesische Star Youssou N`Dour. Moderator Peter Gabriel sagte, das Konzert unter dem Motto "Africa Calling" versammele wahrscheinlich die besten afrikanischen Künstler.

Zu den insgesamt zehn kostenlosen Konzerten wurden mehr als eine Million Besucher erwartet. Die Auftritte wurden außerdem über Fernsehen, Radio und Internet übertragen.

The crowd waits for the next act

I blagged my way into the VIP enclosure and 20 metres from the stage I watched the best concert of my life (and believe me I`ve been to quite a few).

The groups were amazing, and when I thought it couldn`t be topped, Green Day came on and tore the place apart.

The sang a tribute to Freddie Mercury "We Are the Champions" (what else could it have been) and I was so overwhelmed I had to put my sunglasses on.

Then Silbermond was up and they were just fantastic.

The lead singer came on and told us to get to Edinburgh. She said we should get the bus, the train, get a flight, hitchhike - anything to get there and be part of it.

We were making history she said.

A political message

The political message and music were closely entwined. People don`t realise how politically active the youth of Germany are.

One of the singers said that her songs may sound like pop, but the lyrics aren`t. That is absolutely right, they always have political messages in their music.

Brian Wilson was also fantastic. I`m 55 and this was the music that my sister brought home with her.

Perhaps it wasn`t for everyone, there were so many young people enjoying the concert, but for me he is the Mozart of Rock and Roll.

And whoever choose to finish with Herbert Groenemeyer was inspired. He had icon status here and is very much a German artist. Germans are very protective of him.

G8 leaders `have to listen`

The organisation has been fantastic. There was good weather, good food and plenty to drink. It was a real festival atmosphere.

But people were well behaved and the police were gentle.

Tim Robbins came on and spoke so eloquently about the cause. I was proud to be an American.

These are the Americans we should listen to.

They don`t just talk the talk, they are active for their cause. These people know who they are and how they can help.

The G8 leaders cannot not listen.

They have to listen or else we should club together and vote them out.

The strenght of feeling here (and at the other gigs) is so apparent that they can`t ignore us.

VERMISCHTES: Zeitung schlägt Bob Geldof für Friedensnobelpreis vor

LONDON (dpa-AFX) - Nach den weltweiten Live-8-Konzerten hat die britische
Zeitung "The Sun" am Montag den Organisator Bob Geldof (50) für den
Friedensnobelpreis vorgeschlagen. "Mit seiner Entschlossenheit, seiner Energie,
seiner Weitsicht und seiner moralischen Courage hat er zwei Mal dauerhaft das
Gewissen der Welt geweckt", begründete das Blatt seinen Aufruf. Mit den
Konzerten am Samstag sollten die Industrienationen gedrängt werden, beim
G8-Gipfel diese Woche in Schottland Maßnahmen gegen das Elend in der Dritten
Welt zu ergreifen.

Zwei Jahrzehnte nach dem ersten von Geldof initiierten Hilfskonzert sehe es
danach aus, dass er ein für alle Mal Armut in die Vergangenheit verbannt habe,
schreibt das Blatt. "1979 hat Mutter Teresa den Friedensnobelpreis für ihren
Kampf gegen Armut und Elend in der Welt gewonnen. Welch besseren Preisträger
könnte es bei der nächsten Verleihung des Preises geben." Geldof habe es nicht
auf Ruhm und Anerkennung abgesehen. Aber mit der Zuerkennung dieses Preises
könnte die Welt erklären: "Vielen Dank, Sir Bob".

Bei den Konzerten am Samstag haben nach einer Auflistung der Zeitung "The
Times" 170 Rock- und Pop-Stars in zehn Städten auf vier Kontinenten 50 Stunden
lang Musik geboten. Etwa 140 Fernseh- und 400 Rundfunkanstalten übertrugen das
weltweite Ereignis. Schätzungen zufolge besuchten insgesamt rund zwei Millionen
Menschen die kostenlosen Konzerte.

"Die Macht der öffentlichen Meinung verändert Stimmung und Haltung der
führenden Politiker der Welt", sagte der britische Finanzminister Gordon Brown
am Montag in einem Rückblick auf die Konzerte. Dies werde beim G8-Treffen (6.-8.
Juli) in Gleneagles deutlich werden, meinte er. Der Schuldenerlass für die
ärmsten Länder sei bereits vereinbart worden, ebenso wie die Verdoppelung der
Entwicklungshilfe, die Europa für den Bau von Schulen und Krankenhäusern
insbesondere in Afrika bereitstellt. "In den nächsten Tagen wird man sehen, ob

ich finde den artikel sehr gut. ich verstehe sowieso nicht, warum so seltne afrikaner zu wort kommen, wenn es darum geht, was gebraucht wird.
also überprüfung der "entwicklungshilfe", wo sie schädlich und kontraproduktiv ist und öffnung der märkte.
Das ist aber auch das Anliegen von Live 8, jedenfalls hab ich das so verstanden.

Musician and Live 8 organiser Midge Ure is one of our G8 guest bloggers

This past week has all been fantastic - a complete whirlwind. On Saturday night I managed to get caught up backstage doing interviews and saw absolutely nothing. I saw U2 at the very beginning, and then nothing until I joined everyone on stage at the very end.

But now I`m in Edinburgh looking out over the huge empty space of Murrayfield stadium. I have to say I think they`ve put the stage in the wrong place; it`s not where I imagined it, but I admit it does look fantastic.

The phone`s been ringing non-stop. I had Bob [Geldof] on the phone half an hour ago with another half dozen artists, who I don`t think we can even fit on to the bill. It`s a weekday evening concert, so we`ve got to give people time to get home from work; there`s only then a finite amount of time for the acts.

Towards the end, Bob and Bono will be part of a delegation leaving Murrayfield and heading for Gleneagles to sit down with the G8 leaders.

Meanwhile we`re still negotiating with police to see if we can set up screens for people who haven`t been able to get a ticket; understandably, the police have a lot on their plate at the minute. But for us it`s important that as many people as possible get to see the concert. It`s that global platform that matters to us.

The music`s over, the message lingers on


It was, as Chris Martin of Coldplay put it, "the greatest thing that`s ever been organised probably in the history of the world", and although veterans of the two world wars might have disagreed, for once the drift-net rock statement captured the mood.
"Probably," people said, at the beginning and at the end, when asked if the thing would work. While the 200,000 people in Hyde Park on Saturday came charged with hope - ready to be thanked, told they were beautiful and bask in the glow of doing the right thing - their faith in the outcome was never more than conditional.



In the end, this is what saved the concert from mawkishness: the possibility of failure put steel in the atmosphere at Live 8.
"Come Monday morning, most people here will have probably forgotten a lot of what was said," said David Smithey, 26, a manager from south London, when it was all over. "But that`s not the point. It`s not us, now, who`ve got to remember."

At midday the approach to the park was a familiar pre-rock concert landscape of men weeing under trees, jocular police and a revivalist with a megaphone: "I used to be a sinner like you, now I`m a winner."

And then you heard the conversations. "Bono gets all his merchandise made in a cooperative factory in South Africa," said a girl in Top Shop`s finest, made-up for a chance appearance on telly.

"Surely the key issue is debt cancellation," said a man waving an Arsenal flag. "Bob can get things done," said another.

A girl dragging a suitcase of provisions said: "I feel bad, I just bought a load of stuff from Harrods food hall when there are, you know, people in Africa ... " Her friends reassured her that this was precisely the issue they were there to confront.

"Tony Blair can`t actually do anything," came the voice of a lone cynic, to which her companion fairly screamed: "YES HE CAN, he`s got a percentage."

At the entrance, fans without tickets pleaded for spares, but apologetically, lest they be mistaken for touts and beaten to death.

The fear of anti-climax made the crowd initially jittery and the organisers seemed to feel it too; the outline of Richard Curtis could be seen hovering anxiously in the wings on stage. It took a while for people to find their voice. When Bono said "eight of the most powerful men on earth are meeting in Gleneagles in Scotland", a huge cheer went up and then abruptly stopped, as people wondered if they should rather be booing. "God bless you, Africa," said Bono, more straightforwardly, and so it began.

This was the soundtrack of the past 20 years of people`s lives. It was almost too much. There was criticism of the line-up in the days before the concert - too many old white rockers at the expense of more modish acts - but when it came to it, the only stars who could unify a crowd of that size were the ones whose songs had been around so long everyone knew them.

Annie Lennox, not the biggest name on the bill, was the most rapturously welcomed. With all the high talk of "togetherness", the crowd didn`t want buffed and starry acts like Mariah Carey, but rather performers who looked as if they had, in common with the rest of us, the odd regular, human experience, even if it was just ageing.

The weirdest sequence of the night was Jon Bon Jovi live from Philadelphia to Brian Wilson in Berlin to Snoop Dogg in London, and then a short film about starving children in Africa. The crowd could not shift registers quickly enough and ragged cheers spilt over as horrendous imagery flashed up on the giant screens. "No," chided Sir Bob, coming on stage afterwards, "I don`t think we clap that, do you?", before telling off the press for being a bunch of dirty cynics.

"Fock off, Bob!" someone called out, fondly.

If there was something in the evening to be cynical about, it was the divide between the ordinary ticket holders and the corporate, media and celebrity guests who got to hog the first 50 rows or so, and to whom the food dilemma occasionally boiled down to such flashes of clarity as, "If we eat all the food in the bag, darling, then the bag will be lighter."

It was good old Madonna, three years shy of 50 and bouncing around like it was still 1985, who tackled the issue head on. Looking down at the privileged front rows, which included Boris Becker, the Beckhams and most of BBC light entertainment, she said icily: "Is this the gold circle?" Then she made everyone clap hands to Music and when the photographers carried on snapping, screamed at them to put down their cameras and, "Play the fucking game; I`m not leaving till you do." They looked at each other to see who would break first. And then, sheepishly, they did as they were told.

There were, of course, lots of warm, fuzzy and nonsensical statements from the stage, and it fell to Ms Dynamite, never one to shirk her duty, to remind everyone that "at the end of the day, we as a nation have robbed, killed, stolen and tortured the third world", and that if there was a debt to be paid, we owed it.

"Er, I don`t think so," sniffed a woman standing behind me. "It`s them lot killing each other."

The celebrity surprise guests were greeted with varying degrees of bemusement and applause. There was a surge forward when Brad Pitt came out, but he is not the untarnished hero he once was and people couldn`t resist shouting "how`s Jen?"

Kofi Annan`s presence should have blown all the other Live 8 surprises out of the water, but then Philadelphia topped it by dragging the Delaration of Independence, under glass, out on stage; it`s a shame no one thought to unfurl the Magna Carta at our end.

The schmaltzy hand-waving mood inspired by REM was checked by the appearance of Bill Gates, introduced by Geldof as "the greatest philanthropist of our age". He was greeted with calls of "Windows is shite, mate" and "We want Warren Buffett!" - a reassuring sign that the crowd hadn`t totally lost its head.

And so it went on, huge waves of sentiment tempered, every now and then, with gentle notes of caution.

"It`s a bit sad they couldn`t get a few more black performers," said Yeti Bellow, a dentist from south London who had to explain to her 14-year-old nephew who "that Beatles guy" was. "They said no one would have heard of them, but that`s rubbish. Look at the R&B charts." Still, she thought, the event could only be a good thing.

As people left wearily after midnight, dragging their feet and looking stunned, the cliche of the previous week - Sending a Message - seemed suddenly full-bodied.

Live 8 stars mount `final push`

An international line-up of stars has joined the call to eradicate poverty at Edinburgh`s climactic Live 8 concert.
Almost 60,000 music fans gathered at Murrayfield Stadium for the Live 8 The Final Push gig, as G8 leaders arrived for talks in Gleneagles.

The concert was opened by local heroes The Proclaimers singing 500 Miles and featured Bob Geldof and George Clooney.

Host Lenny Henry said: "Tonight is a night of celebration as we attempt to make poverty history."

Jazz pianist Jamie Cullum sang the Beatles classic, All You Need Is Love, with Natasha Bedingfield, who also sang her hit These Words.

Scottish favourites Wet Wet Wet performed another Beatles song, With A Little Help From My Friends and their biggest hit, Love Is All Around.


Bono said millions supported the campaign to end poverty

Pop band McFly were followed by Big Brother presenter Davina McCall who came on stage accompanied by a delegation of children from C8, the children`s version of G8, which began on Sunday.

She said: "In Africa every single minute 20 children die needlessly just because they were born poor. It can be stopped."

Comedian Eddie Izzard introduced South African band 1 Giant Leap.

He later filled in for technical problems by leading the crowd in a sing-along including "Flower of Scotland".

Girl group Sugababes were followed on stage by U2 star Bono who delivered a message to the G8 leaders.

He said that he had been to Gleneagles and given G8 leaders permission to spend money "ending extreme poverty in our lifetime".


Hollywood star George Clooney supported the event

Holding a small case up to the audience, Bono added: "In this box are 38 million people who are ready to go to work on this issue, and that`s just the Live 8 campaign.

"When you add to that 157 million people who signed up for the global action against poverty in 75 countries, I would call that permission to spend your money."

He then introduced former South African president Nelson Mandela who appeared on a giant TV screen at the back of the stage.

Hollywood actor George Clooney appeared in person on the Murrayfield stage.

Clooney introduced former Eurythmics star Annie Lennox who sang two songs before telling the G8 politicians: "Do nothing at your peril."

Film actress Susan Sarandon brought Live 8 organiser Bob Geldof onto the stage.

The former Boomtown Rat told them: "We told them (the G8 leaders) we`d come and we came."

Fellow Live 8 chief Midge Ure followed Irish band The Thrills on the bill.

As heavy rain began to fall, Ure performed a version of the Ultravox hit Vienna with Eddie Izzard on piano.

Supermodel Claudia Schiffer then came on stage with a message for the Chancellor of her native Germany. She said: "Gerhard Schroeder, we are watching you. Since you woke up this morning, 30,000 children have already died.

"I myself have got two kids and I am so lucky to live in England.

"Therefore, on behalf of all the African mothers, I beg the politicians to do something now."

Feeder, Embrace, Neneh Cherry and Youssou N`Dour were next on the bill.

Other performers inlcuded Beverley Knight, Texas, Kathryn Jenkins and Snow Patrol.

Fran Healy from Travis said: "Every single performer I¿ve spoken to has said that the atmosphere here is even more electric than it was at Hyde Park on Saturday.

"The Scottish crowd is a force to be reckoned with! We¿ve got it easy over here and we forget that sometimes."
