CHICAGO — Hoping to capitalize on the buzz over using homegrown alcohol fuel instead of gasoline, auto rivals General Motors and Ford Motor both said here Wednesday that they're teaming with energy companies on projects that could make so-called E85 a mainstream fuel instead of a boutique rarity.

GM marketing executive Brent Dewar holds the yellow gas cap that will mark vehicles that operate on E85.

Ethanol Industry Welcomes Continued Support of Bush Administration
Energy Secretary Bodman Reiterates Administration’s Commitment to Ethanol

Washington, DC – The Renewable Fuels Association (RFA) today welcomed the continued, full-throated support of the Bush Administration, and in particular Secretary of Energy Samuel Bodman. In remarks yesterday, Secretary Bodman underscored the important role ethanol can play in breaking America’s oil addiction and specifically called on automakers to produce more flex fuel vehicles (FFV), capable of using ethanol blends up to 85 percent (E85).

"It should be our common goal that E85 become a nationwide fueling option," Bodman said. "In the coming days, I will be asking that we do more to make consumers aware of the flex-fuel option both when they are considering a new car purchase and for existing owners of flex-fuel vehicles."

Secretary Bodman’s remarks are part of a continued emphasis the Bush Administration has put on growing America’s renewable fuels industry. President Bush singled out ethanol in his State of the Union Address as an integral part in ensuring America’s energy security. Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns and Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Steve Johnson have both toured the country promoting renewable fuels, including remarks at the 11th Annual National Ethanol Conference in February.

“The commitment the Bush Administration has shown towards America’s renewable fuels industry has been vital to ensuring the continued increased use and production of clean-burning, oil-import reducing renewable fuels like ethanol,” said RFA President Bob Dinneen. “Coupled with the bipartisan support of Members of Congress, President Bush has changed the debate about renewable fuels from ‘Are renewable fuels worth it?’ to ‘How much can we produce and how soon can we do it?’ That shift is not only good for the ethanol industry and our nation’s farmers, but it means cleaner air, better economic conditions, and greater energy security for all Americans.”

Currently, 97 ethanol biorefineries nationwide have the capacity to produce nearly 4.5 billion gallons annually. There are 33 ethanol biorefineries and nine expansions under construction with a combined annual capacity of more than 2 billion gallons.

      Our Family of Companies

Kinergy Marketing is the ethanol sales and distribution arm of Pacific Ethanol, Inc. Formerly an independent company founded by PEI's Neil Koehler, Kinergy has a strong and rapidly growing base of customers who appreciate our commitment to exceptional service. Because the demand for ethanol in California far exceeds the production capacity of existing and proposed ethanol plants in the state, Kinergy will continue to sell ethanol produced in the Midwest as well as selling all the ethanol that PEI produces in California. Shipping ethanol from the Midwest by rail to intermediate storage and then out by truck to gasoline distribution terminals can be complicated, but we have made ourselves experts in transportation logistics, and our emphasis on superior service has led to close relationships with both suppliers and customers. Driven by the increasing demand for ethanol as well as the growing reputation of the company, Kinergy's annual revenues have jumped from $15 million in 2002 to over $100 million in 2005. The company's market area has also expanded from California to include customers in Arizona, Nevada, and Oregon.

GMC Yukon, Yukon XL and Sierra. GM has sold more than 1.5 million flex-fuel vehicles that run on both gasoline and E85.

Ford Motor Co., DaimlerChrysler AG and Nissan Motor Corp. are also offering flex-fuel vehicles this year.

GM is getting support in the pilot project from California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. California EPA secretary Alan Lloyd said expanded use of E85, a fuel that is a blend of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline, could improve air quality, reduce carbon dioxide emissions and help achieve energy independence.

While energy companies have been reluctant to embrace E85 at a time of record profits from oil sales, Chevron Technology Ventures, a subsidiary of oil giant Chevron Corp., will team up to test consumers' acceptance of E85.

Pacific Ethanol, a renewable fuels producer based in Fresno, Calif., said it will open its first ethanol plant in Madera, Calif., later this year. The company plans three more ethanol plants "in the near future," said Pacific Ethanol spokesman Tom Koehler.

With widespread use of E85, California's use of alternative fuels could grow from 900 million gallons today to 2 billion gallons in five years, Koehler said. There is currently only one E85 filling station in California, Koehler said.

Environmental groups have been at odds with the auto industry over plans to offer "flex-fuel" vehicles because, they say, automakers earn credits by selling flex-fuel vehicles that enable them to sell more gas guzzlers.

Longtime critics such as the Union of Concerned Scientists and the Natural Resources Defense Council are supporting GM's pilot project, even while pressing for other improvements on fuel economy.

Without greater vehicle efficiency, there won't be enough land to grow the crops necessary to fuel American vehicles, said Roland Hwang, senior policy analyst with NRDC.

Presse: Toyota will in USA ab 2008 Ethanol-Fahrzeuge verkaufen

In France, ethanol is produced from grapes that are of insufficient quality for wine production. Prompted by the increase in oil prices in the 1970s, Brazil introduced a program to produce ethanol for use in automobiles in order to reduce oil imports. Brazilian ethanol is made mainly from sugar cane. Pure ethanol (100% ethanol) is used in approximately 40 percent of the cars in Brazil. The remaining vehicles use blends of 24 percent ethanol with 76 percent gasoline. Brazil consumes nearly 4 billion gallons of ethanol annually. In addition to consumption, Brazil also exports ethanol to other countries.

Sweden has used ethanol in chemical production for many years. As a result, Sweden’s crude oil consumption has been cut in half since 1980. During the same time period, the use of gasoline and diesel for transportation has also increased. Emissions have been reduced by placing catalytic converters in vehicle exhaust systems which decrease carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon, and nitrogen oxide emissions. To address global warming concerns, the amount of carbon dioxide produced while burning fossil fuels must be reduced. Ethanol-blended gasoline and ethanol-blended diesel are being considered as viable alternatives to further lower emission levels.

      2008: 15 Cent / Liter____________2008: 10 Cent / Liter
      2009: 21 Cent / Liter____________2009: 18 Cent / Liter
      2010: 27 Cent / Liter____________2010: 26 Cent / Liter
      2011: 33 Cent / Liter____________2011: 33 Cent / Liter
      2012: 45 Cent / Liter____________2012: 45 Cent / Liter
