      U.S. Army Selects Spectrum's SDR-4000 for Software Defined Radio Research

      COLUMBIA, MARYLAND--(MARKET WIRE)--Dec 14, 2006 -- Spectrum Signal Processing (USA) Inc., a subsidiary of Spectrum Signal Processing Inc. (TSX:SSY.TO - News)(NASDAQ:SSPI - News), today announced that its flexComm(TM) SDR-4000 platform has been selected by the Space and Terrestrial Communications Directorate of the U.S. Army Communications-Electronics Research, Development and Engineering Center (CERDEC) for software defined radio research and development.

      The SDR-4000 is a rugged 3U CompactPCI® software defined radio platform that is comprised of two main hardware components: the PRO-4600 modem processing engine and the XMC-3321 dual transceiver input/output mezzanine module. RapidIO(TM) provides a high bandwidth interconnect fabric between these cards, as well as the input/output functionality to ensure the efficient use of the processing resources. Software development tools provided with this platform include Spectrum's quicComm(TM) hardware abstraction layer, which facilitates algorithm partitioning and programming, and a real-time operating system. The platform can be optimized for program specific size, weight, power consumption, cost and ruggedization requirements.

(TSX:SSY.TO - News)(NASDAQ:SSPI - News) today announced that its flexComm(TM) SDR-3001 software defined radio (SDR) platforms have been selected by a leading global telecommunications software and service provider for internal research and development into Multiple Input/Multiple Output (MIMO) technology.

      MIMO technology refers to the use of multiple transmitters, antennas and receivers in a wireless communication system to increase spectral efficiency. MIMO allows more data to be transferred within the same spectral bandwidth and/or to increase transmission quality of service. The ultimate goal of adopting MIMO technologies is to improve cost efficiencies in radio networks.

      "The benefits of MIMO technology can outweigh the additional costs, including multiple RF front ends and additional processing, necessary to support MIMO systems," said Leonard G.
