Das der Kurs von Globe nicht in die Puschen kommt, kann man auch nicht immer Malawi als Location anlasten.

Shares in Mkango Resources jump 30% on assay results from Songwe project in Malawi

Mkango Resources' assay results - from the stage-one drilling program at the Songwe project in Malawi - show significant near-surface zones of rare earth mineralisation as well as zones of higher grade mineralisation and elevated heavy rare earth enrichment.

“We’re encouraged by the results versus the previous exploration programs; this is the first stage of drilling and we’ve expanded the mineralization laterally and to depth,” Mkango Resources Chief Executive William Dawes told RareMetalBlog. “We are getting some good levels of heavy rare earths, particularly dysprosium, in some of the holes…and extending not only through the carbonatite but through the fenite as well...so, yes, we’re pleased.”

Mkango shares, briefly halted in the run-up to the release of Wednesday’s assay results, were trading 30.1% higher midday at 69 Canadian cents each.

Mkango’s assay results were limited to ten of 13 completed drill holes; results from the three remaining holes should be available in about three weeks. Eight of the 10 holes that were drilled were inclined (60-70 degrees) and collared on the northeastern slopes of Songwe hill, which rises approximately 230m above the surrounding plain.

Significant zones of rare earth mineralization included 57.5m grading 3.8% TREO, 38.8m grading 2.5% TREO, 41.9m grading 2.1% TREO and 57.0m grading 1.9% TREO.

For full results of the latest assays, please refer to Mkango’s press release HERE.

Mkango is also about halfway through a mineralogy study of the results, which Dawes said should be completed within the next few weeks.

The chief executive said the positive drilling results pave the way for stage two of the drilling program, which should start in mid-November.

Mkango has committed to 3,000 metres of drilling, but that could be ramped up to 5,000 to 6,000 meters of drilling, depending on the team’s progress, Dawes said.

Much of the groundwork has already been done, such as building access roads, including one to the top of the project’s 230-meter hill. Drilling pads are in place as is the team's camp – all the basics that should make the second stage of drilling proceed quickly and smoothly. A smaller rig is also being brought in so the team can drill from the road.

Baosteel Group Pays $1.95 Billion for Stake in Niobium Miner

Sept. 2 (Bloomberg) -- Baosteel Group Corp. and CITIC Group teamed up with three Chinese companies to pay $1.95 billion for a 15 percent stake in the world's biggest niobium producer as demand for the raw material grows.

Baosteel, China's second-largest steelmaker, CITIC, Anshan Iron & Steel Group Corp., Shougang Corp. and Taiyuan Iron & Steel Group Co. agreed to buy the stake in Brazil's Companhia Brasileira de Metalurgia e Mineracao, according to an e-mailed statement from Baosteel.

Buying the stake gives the companies a share in a company with 82 percent of the global market for niobium, according to Posco, the South Korean steelmaker that bought a stake in March. Rising prices of rare metals from niobium, which can be used to strengthen steel, and indium, used in liquid-crystal displays, to lithium, chrome and magnesium, have increased competition for supplies.

“Worldwide demand for niobium recorded an annual growth rate of some 10 percent from 2002 through 2009, buoyed by growing need for high-grade steel,” the Baosteel statement said. “Demand for niobium is projected to grow faster than the expansion in world crude steel production.”

The Brazilian producer, established in 1955, mines and produces niobium, a key material used to make steel for cars, building and oil pipelines. The deal follows the purchase of a similar-sized stake in the closely held company by a group of Japanese and South Korean companies in March.

The companies that bought that stake include Posco, South Korea's National Pension Service , Nippon Steel Corp., JFE Holdings Inc., Sojitz Corp. and Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corp.

“Such investment has a very relevant strategic value for all parties,” according to the Baosteel statement. “Brazil holds the largest part of total known niobium reserves in the world, according to data from official agencies, and CBMM is thought to hold rights to the best niobium reserves in Brazil,” the statement said.

Portuguese company retained to probe feasibility of power plant for Malawi niobium project

      By: Marcel Chimwala
      16th September 2011

ASX-listed resources group Globe Metals & Mining has retained Portuguese multidisciplinary engineering group Mota-Engil to conduct a feasibility study on generating power for Globe’s Kanyika niobium project, in the northern Malawi district of Mzimba.

Globe’s African projects manager, Dries Kruger, says Mota-Engil will be exploring the feasibility of generating power at a mini hydroelectric plant on one of the large rivers near Kanyika. “The process is part of the definitive feasibility study for the Kanyika project and is of utmost importance because availability of electricity for the mine forms a crucial part of the feasibility study.”

Recently, Chinese Exploration & Mining Company (ECE) invested $48-million in Globe for a 53% equity stake in the ASX-listed company.

Meanwhile, all aspects of the feasibility study are now in full swing, including the environmental- and social-impact assessment (ESIA) process, mine design and infrastructure and power studies.

Kruger explains that the ESIA process is progressing well, with two rounds of public consultation meetings having been completed.

However, he says one of the biggest challenges is the design of a metallurgical process to economically extract niobium metal from ore. Globe has committed significant resources towards the development of an optimum processing process and currently has four programmes under way to ensure the best strategy is selected.

The company is also undertaking a bulk ore sampling programme at Kanyika, with the samples sent to laboratories in South Africa, Australia and China.
Globe is aiming to complete the feasibility study in 2012 and start production in 2014.

“We are optimistic about this project because the niobium market remains positive, with prices steadily increasing and predicted to increase further in the foreseeable future,” says Kruger.

Globe is also exploring for uranium at Livingstonia, in northern Malawi, and for rare earths at Machinga, in the south of the former British colony.
