Malaysia, which holds the Asean chair this year, is looking into the possibility of working with China to jointly manufacture the Asean car. Minister of International Trade and Industry II Datuk Seri Ong Ka Chuan said Proton was looking into cooperating with China's automobile industry to realise the Asean car vision.

Ong said he visited Geely (officially known as Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co Ltd) last week to look into the cooperation. Geely, which has increased its production from 250,000 to 500,000 cars annually, recently acquired Volvo. "We are looking into the possibility of both Proton and Geely creating the Asean car. It will be a very big investment. "It will not only create opportunities for Malaysia but escalate our trade volume with China as well," he told reporters after the official launching of the 12th China-Asean Expo (Caexpo) 2015 here today.

Ong is leading the Malaysian delegation to the annual event, one of the biggest international exposition in China. A total of 149 Malaysian companies in lifestyle products, food and beverages, health and wellness, franchise services and education services, are participating as exhibitors at Caexpo. China, Ong said, was chosen because the country had huge automobile factories. "Also, in this industry, they place important emphasis on research, which we are supportive of the research mechanism, but cannot afford. "As such, it will be good for us to cooperate with China to develop the Asean car," he stressed. Ong added that it would also open up vast employment opportunities and bring in huge revenue for Malaysia.

It was reported in December last year that Proton Holdings Bhd had said it was ready to collaborate in the Asean car project after Indonesian President Joko Widodo had expressed interest in the idea that was proposed by Malaysia, and that the national car company was expected to be involved in the project. However, in March this year, Deputy International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Hamim Samuri told parliament that there had been no official discussions on the Asean car project. He had said that although there were proposals on the Asean car, the matter was not discussed officially as it would need the consent from all Asean leaders."

Volvo Cars, controlled by China’s Geely Automobile Holdings, inaugurated its new CNY420m (US$66m) R&D in Shanghai this week. The Volvo Car (China) R&D Centre will develop a new Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) to be shared by the next generation Volvo 40 and a forthcoming Geely compact model. It will be the first platform architecture to be shared by the two brands.

Peter Mertens, head of Volvo’s R&D, confirmed that Volvo’s leading edge technologies are being pooled into the new Shanghai facility. Chinese market requirements are being taken into account in the development of the new CMA which will be powered by the 1.3-litre and 1.5-litre Drive-E engine family."

Dabei ist mir eine kleine Diskrepanz der Gesamtverkaufszahlen aufgefallen. Geely gibt in ihrer offiziellen Bekanntmachung an, das bis einschl. August 313.205 Autos verkauft worden sind. Wenn man aber die Monatsergebnisse von Jan-Aug. addiert, komme ich auf 313.439 Fahrzeuge, also auf 234 mehr ....

@Fire72 Ich denke mal das die staatlichen Subventionen alle bekommen die keine Spritfresser verkaufen. Die anderen bauen halt mit dicken Motoren.

PS: habe das Gefühl das jetzt schon weniger chinesen hier auf Phuket sind. Sehr viele waren am Strand um Hochzeitsfotos zu machen.
Wenn Papa jetzt noch einen Geely zur Hochzeit kauft, können wir uns gemütlich zurücklege
