China's Auto Industry Eyes Subsidies For Electric, Hybrid Cars

Beijing’s noxious smog is a reminder of why China needs to step up investments in clean energy. This includes promoting electric and hybrid cars as an alternative to gas-guzzling cars idling on clogged city roads. The much-praised Toyota Prius is supposedly sold in China, but I’ve never spotted one on the road in Beijing. As for BYD, the domestic battery maker turned automaker, its electric cars have yet to find a market outside of public procurement in its home base of Shenzhen. It suffered a bout of terrible publicity last year when a battery-powered e6 taxi caught fire in a collision. Relatives of the dead driver later sued the company, which claimed that the car wasn’t at fault.

China’s government set a target last year of producing 500,000 alternative-energy cars by 2015. Bloomberg New Energy Finance reports that 12,791 electric and hybrids shipped in 2012. That’s a fraction of the 14.6 million passenger cars sold last year in the world’s largest auto market. If at first you don’t succeed, try try again. Automobile industry officials are currently seeking to expand the subsidy program for electric cars to 25 cities, up from five cities in a three-year program that expired last year and kicked in nearly $10,000 per car sold. China – and other car-loving countries – would love to jump ahead to that stage, but hybrids are better than nothing. Even better would be higher fuel standards for conventional cars. Beijing and other cities have raised standards, but the vast majority of cars aren’t covered. The chairman of China’s National Development and Reform Commission, which regulates fuel prices, hinted this week that it may adjust prices so that refiners can pass on the cost of upgrades, a key sticking point. Right now, market prices may be higher than retail prices, providing a subsidy to consumer that passes on losses to refiners.

Allerdings könnte auch Qoros damit ein Marktöffner für chinesische Autos sein.
D.h. die Vorurteile und Ablehnungen gegen chinesische Autos aufweichen.
Sollte qualitativ noch ein großer Unterschied sein, wird Li nichts anderes übrig bleiben, sich ein grosses Stück des fetten Kuchens schnellstens mit Volvos Hilfe zu reservieren.
Erfahrungsgemäß zieht eine erfolgreiche Firma rasch Konkurrenten an, die auch einen Teil des Gewinns haben wollen. Li hat ja alle Werkzeuge, die dafür nötig sind. Er muß nur aufs Gas drücken.

Ich mag es nur schwer eingestehen, aber ich befürchte, dass der QOROS 3 mit seinem Markteintritt bei Geely & Co. im EC7/EC8-Segment ganz schön wildern wird, da der bolkottierte Preis zwischen 90.000 - 110.000 Yuan ein ziemlicher Kampfpreis ist. Gefühlt glaube ich, dass der QOROS 3 dem EC7 und EC8 zudem qualitativ z. Z. weit überlegen ist...ansonsten hätten sie ihn auch nicht in Genf ausgestellt ....

The Qoros 3 Sedan has been launched on the Geneva Motor Show, alongside the the Qoros 3 Estate Concept and the Qoros 3 Cross Hybrid Concept. The Qoros 3 sedan will be launched on the Chinese car market in the second half of this year, priced from 90.000 to 110.000 yuan.

Launch in Europe is planned for late 2013 but Qoros didn’t say for which countries, they did however say the price will range from 12.000 to 14.000 euro. Qoros is a brand of Chery-Quantum, a joint venture between Chery Auto of China and Quantum LLC of Israel.

Two engines: a 1.6 with 126hp and 155nm, and a 1.6 turbo with 156hp and 220nm, both mated to a six-speed manual or a 6-speed DCT. Qoros is also working on a three-cylinder 1.2 turbo with 130hp but that engine will be launched later. All three engines are based on existing Chery power plants. Size: 4615/1839/1445mm, wheelbase is 2690mm.

Infotainment system based around a large touch screen, with connectivity for iPod and other fancy phones. Flat-bottomed steering wheel is very sporty. Hand brake close to driver’s leg for hardcore rallying in town.

By far the best design from any Chinese automaker so far, and a brand that can seriously threaten the Europeans on their own land. May there be battle! More on the other Qoros cars soon.

Conti Tech eröffnet Forschungs- und Entwicklungszentrum in China

Continental Conti Tech hat heute ein neues Forschungs- und Entwicklungszentrum in China eröffnet. In Changshu sollen künftig Produkte der Lagerungs- und Schwingungstechnik entstehen - in enger Zusammenarbeit mit Kunden wie Geely, Great Wall Motor Company, General Motors, Shanghai Volkswagen und Qoros. Rund acht Millionen Euro hat das Unternehmen in das RandD-Center investiert, in dem bis Ende des Jahres 30 Ingenieure arbeiten werden.

Den Ausschlag für den Aufbau weiterer Forschungs- und Entwicklungskompetenzen in Asien gab ein Auftrag vom Automobilhersteller Qoros, der sich in diesen Tagen erstmals offiziell auf dem Genfer Automobilsalon präsentiert. Der Geschäftsbereich Vibration Control hatte im Jahr 2010 den Zuschlag erhalten, mit Motorlagern an der Entwicklung der zentralen Plattform für den Bau des ersten Serienfahrzeugs der Automarke mitzuarbeiten.

Das neue Forschungs- und Entwicklungszentrum liegt 100 Kilometer entfernt von Shanghai in der Provinz Jiangsu, dem Standort mehrerer Automobilhersteller. Von Changshu aus können neben China auch die asiatischen Märkte in Korea, Japan und Indien gut bedient werden. (ampnet/jri)

Following its acquisition of Swedish luxury vehicle brand Volvo two years ago, Geely Group has made another strategic transaction that analysts say will bring benefits from intellectual property rights.

Zhejiang-based Geely recently announced it bought Manganese Bronze Holdings, manufacturer of the iconic London black cab, for 11.04 million pounds ($16.7 million), China Intellectual Property News reported.

The acquisition covers all business and core assets of MBH including patents and trademarks as well as a manufacturing plant and equipment.

It also includes MBH's stock of unsold vehicles, according to the announcement.

Geely said it will rebuild the globally known brand while gaining a more robust foundation for technological innovation and brand promotion through MBH's patented technologies.

"I am delighted that Geely has successfully secured the future of the London Taxi Company, ensuring the continuing manufacture of a world famous, fully accessible and instantly recognizable vehicle synonymous with London," Boris Johnson, the city's mayor, told Xinhua News Agency.

After the acquisition, Geely said innovations will focus on research and development of "green" and mid-size cars.

Geely is now a patent giant in China's auto industry with about 14,000 Chinese and international applications, more than 8,000 of which have been granted.

Geely's takeover of Volvo also enlarged the company's patent inventory for safety and environmental protection technologies.

The wide range of intellectual property rings is fueling the company's rapid growth, said Geely.

But it is not the first Chinese carmaker to value IP in an overseas acquisition.

In 2009, Beijing Automotive Industry Holdings Co bought the IP assets of Saab Automobile for $200 million, including whole-vehicle and parts design standards, turbocharged engine designs, gearbox technologies, and test measures and standards.

BAIC brought the assets back to China on two 1,000-gigabyte hard disks and paper documents weighing 3.5 tons.

Overseas mergers and acquisitions in China's auto industry have increased in recent years, and all have a common core value - continuously rising attention to IP, said industry insiders.

Merger and acquisition experts said it illustrates improvements in the capacity of local automakers as well as the quickening pace of the nation's "going-out" policy of international acquisitions.

"To learn, digest and absorb the world's advanced technologies is an urgent need for Chinese vehicle producers," said Huang Yonghe, an expert at the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers

"China's automakers lag behind their foreign competitors in technological accumulation, so transactions of IP assets is a very good way of narrowing the gap," he added.

China, lagging behind its target to put electric vehicles on roads, should expand its subsidy program to include other types of fuel-efficient cars such as hybrids, according to Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co.

“The criteria to qualify for subsidies should be based on the fuel consumption and emissions of the vehicle, instead of what kind of technology they use,” Li Shufu, chairman of Zhejiang Geely, which owns Volvo Car Corp., told reporters at the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference in Beijing today. “The government should expand subsidies to include more types of vehicles, including all sorts of hybrids.”

Li’s comments come as automakers await for the new central government under incoming Premier Li Keqiang to introduce a plan to promote alternative-energy vehicles and alleviate pollution. Including gasoline-electric vehicles under a subsidy program would be a boon for companies such as Toyota Motor Corp. (7203), maker of the Prius hybrid.

“There’s a lot of uncertainty around the political transition,” Max Warburton, a Singapore-based auto analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein & Co., said in a phone interview. “You’ve had a bit of a battle of personality at the top of the Chinese government, between pro-electric vehicle and electric-vehicle skeptics. It’s not quite clear who’s going to be in charge in a few months’ time.”

A three-year trial program that ended last year provided subsidies of as much as 60,000 yuan ($9,650) for electric vehicles and 50,000 yuan for plug-in hybrids. Automakers sold a combined 12,791 such vehicles in 2012, according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance, lagging behind the central government’s target for 500,000 units in cumulative sales by 2015 and 5 million by 2020.

The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers has suggested to the central government to increase the number of trial cities to help promote the development of alternative- energy vehicles, according to Ye Shengji, a deputy secretary general of the auto group.

As the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and National People's Congress prepare to meet later this month, Geely Automobile Chairman and CPPCC Member Li Shufu has announced new proposals for boosting environmental standards. According to a report appearing in the Beijing Youth Daily today, Mr. Li has one proposal advocating the introduction of stricter standards governing air quality, and another regarding the establishment of a unified system for the taxi industry.
Mr. Li (pictured) has been a key figure in the debate for more stringent environmental standards in China for the last seven to eight years. He has already proposed a set of air quality standards for automobile interiors last year. This year, he will be focusing his efforts on general air pollution. He believes that poor air quality is the chief culprit behind a lot of problems in China, and it can't be solved by the efforts of a few municipal governments. Mr. Li recommends that the country's current Environmental Protection Law be reevaluated to ensure there are no loopholes or other areas of concern. Mr. Li is also a proponent of emissions trading as a method to reduce the total amount of carbon emissions in the country.
Meanwhile, Mr. Li also has concerns about the country's taxi industry. He advocates the establishment of strict, universal standards for the industry based on observations of taxi markets both inside and outside of China. The standards should aim to promote the development and sales of environmentally friendly taxis, as well as encourage more diversity in the taxi industry.
Mr. Li also has a proposal for tax reform that he plans to submit.
