Gross margins slip below 20% for some LED chipmakers

Siu Han, Taipei; Jackie Chang, DIGITIMES [Monday 2 May 2011]

LED chipmakers have announced financial performance for the first quarter of 2011, with Epistar and Formosa Epitaxy (FOREPI) both seeing less than 20% gross margins due to decreased capacity utilization and falling prices.

Epistar reported revenues of NT$4,565 million in the first quarter, an 11.77% on-year increase. However, comparing with 35.77% of gross margin in the same period last year, the gross margin for first-quarter 2011 fell to a record low of 14.84%, below market expectations. After-tax income was NT$348 million with earnings per share (EPS) of NT$0.41, both lower than the first-quarter 2010 levels.

FOREPI announced NT$1,105 million in first-quarter revenues, a 50% on-year increase. However, its gross margin fell to 15.38%, far less than 38.37% for the same period last year. After-tax income was NT$94 million, a 50% on-year decrease, with EPS of NT$0.20.

Epistar stated the yields in the first quarter were only around 50-60%, which will increase to 60-70% in the second quarter. Hopefully the gross margin of second quarter will increase due to full capacity and rising yields, said Epistar.

FOREPI also stated the first quarter was the worst of the year and the second quarter will see increases in both capacity and yields.

Genesis Photonics outperformed its peers in the first quarter. It announced revenue of NT$1,037 million, a 144% on-year increase. The gross margin for the quarter was 23.6% and after-tax income came to NT$127 million with EPS of NT$0.60.

The recent stock price for Genesis Photonics also has been showing a strong bullish trend due to the partnership it recently formed with China-based Potevio Group.

Genesis aims to be second largest producer of LED lighting chips in China

Siu Han, Taipei; Jackie Chang, DIGITIMES [Tuesday 14 June 2011]

Taiwan-based LED chipmaker Genesis Photonics indicated its goal is to become the second largest LED lighting chip producer in China. Its market share in China is expected to exceed international firm Cree by the end of 2011 to 2012, according to David Chung, chairman of Genesis.

According to Genesis, its 2010 capital expenditure was NT$3 billion (US$104 million), mainly for building manufacturing facilities. The capital expenditure for 2011 is expected to be around NT$2 billion. The number of equipments in Taiwan's manufacturing facility will increase to 75 units. Future gross margin will hopefully remain around 23% as the first quarter.

Chung pointed out the shipments of LED lighting chips to Japan, South Korea and China have accounted for 20-30% of total revenues. Shipments to China-based customers are anticipated to be steady throughout the third quarter and LED lighting applications will continue to increase.

According to Chung, the LED markets in Japan and China have been showing the fastest growth. Despite many international firms aggressively entering the market, Taiwan-based firms continue to enjoy a competitive advantage due to low costs.
