Africa oil withdraws from Ethiopia’s block 7 and 8
—August 29, 2014 by Samuel Kamau Mbote

Africa Oil has announced it will be withdrawing from blocks 7 and 8 in the Somali region where it has 30 percent interest together with New age which is the operator with 40 percent and EAX with 30 percent.

The company says its decision has been informed by its concerns over the commerciality of the reservoir as well as doubts over the quality.

This is despite some hope exhibited by the El kuran-3 well on block 8 that was completed in the first half of the year and showed had some oil and gas shows.

“The Company has informed the Ethiopian Government and its partners that it intends to withdraw from Blocks 7 and 8 in the Somali region. Although the El Kuran-3 well did demonstrate some oil and gas potential, the Company does not feel it is warranted to continue efforts at this time due to concerns over reservoir quality and commerciality,” the company said in a statement.

Elsewhere in Ethiopia the company says it will be continuing with plans to acquire 2D seismic in the Rift Basin area while in the South Omo block Africa Oil and its partners say they will be entering into the next exploration period.

Africa Oil has 30 percent interest in the South Omo basin together with its partners Tullow Oil (operator) and Marathon Oil with 50 percent and 20 percent respectively while in the Rift basin Africa oil (operator) and its partner Marathon have a 50 percent interest each.

      "Kenya @the forefront of "dramatic growth in oil +gas" " - MRA - Aug 26, 2014

      - Vicky Sidler -
      www.miningreview.com/kenya-at-the-forefront-of-the-dramatic-…

"A large delegation of senior Kenyan officials has flown to Perth this week to gain invaluable knowledge from their Western Australian counterparts on how to deal with resource riches created by their rating as one of world’s most exciting new oil and gas destinations.

Kenya is right at the forefront of the dramatic growth in international interest in East Africa’s oil and gas potential, following a string of onshore and offshore oil and gas discoveries.

While the East African nation and its neighbours are welcoming the tremendous opportunity that oil and gas drilling success has brought to their countries, a number of major issues have arisen, including an urgent requirement to upgrade their legislation covering the resources sector, along with their taxation laws.

East Africa Oil & Gas Australia (EAOGA) Conference

In Perth to participate in the inaugural East Africa Oil & Gas Australia (EAOGA) Conference being staged at the Hyatt Regency on Thursday and Friday August 28 and 29, the Kenyan delegation of Senators and advisors are also holding meetings with a number of leading experts in resources law and community expectations while in Western Australia.

According to Stephen Kuria, an organiser of EAOGA 2014 Conference and Chairman of the Kenya-Australian Chamber of Commerce, the Kenyan delegation views its visit to Western Australia as a vital step in the process of updating its oil and gas and mining laws.

“Western Australia has a tremendous amount of experience in oil and gas and mining and is well recognised around the world as a leading producer of LNG, along with gold and iron ore,” Mr Kuria said.

“With East Africa now considered as the newest significant region in the LNG race and Kenya’s oil and gas sector opening up at an incredible rate because of recent oil and gas discoveries, the Nation is keen to ensure that it is prepared for the many changes, economic and culturally, that being an oil and gas ‘hot spot’ brings with it,” he said.

Mining education and environmental and social issues

While in Perth the Kenyan delegation, which includes Senators Paul Wamatangi, Catherine Mukitte, and Dr Wilfred Machage, is meeting with Western Australian Government representatives from the Department of State Development, Department of Resources and Industry Development, and the Department of Mines and Petroleum, while they will also receive a special presentation on mining education and environmental and social issues at the Bentley Campus of Curtin University.

The Kenyan visitors will also attend a special dinner hosted by the Kenyan High Commissioner, HE Isaiya Kabira, which will also be attended by WA Minister for Mines and Petroleum, Bill Marmion and WA Minister for Commerce, Michael Mischin. They will also be flying to Kalgoorlie for a tour of the “Super Pit”.

The dramatic effect of the forecast oil and gas riches on Kenya will also be a major topic for discussion at EAOGA 2014.

Dr Machage, will provide a presentation on “Lapset, Transport and Infrastructure in East Africa” on the morning of the second day, while later in the day, Mwendia Nyaga, Chief Executive Oil & Energy Services and former MD of Kenya National Oil, will discuss “The East African status of the upstream oil and gas industry”, and Isaiya Kabira, the High Commissioner of Kenya in Australia, will present on “Government Policies, Regulation and Bidding Rounds –Kenya”.

“Kenya has a very close relationship with Australia and many Australian resource companies have been long time explorers there, and have been successful in making some important discoveries.

“So we are really pleased with the strong support we have received for EAOGA 2014 from both the Kenyan, Western Australian and Australian governments,” Mr Kuria said. "

Africa Oil, Marathon Oil initiate drilling of Sala-2 appraisal well
—August 28, 2014 by Samuel Kamau Mbote

Africa Oil and its partner in block 9 Marathon have announced the start of drilling of the Sala-2 appraisal well following the discovery of gas in the Sala -1 well.

The sala-2 appraisal well according to a statement from the partners is designed to test the updip extent of this main reservoir sand.Sala-2 will particularly focis on gas tested at low rates at the lower interval of Sala-1.

Sala-1 drilled a large 80 square kilometer anticlinal feature along the northern basin bounding fault in the Cretaceous Anza graben and encountered several sandstone intervals which had oil and gas shows.

An upper gas bearing interval tested dry gas at a maximum rate of 6 mmcf/d from a 25 meter net pay interval while the lower interval tested gas at low rates of dry gas from a 50m potential net pay interval.

Earlier this month the operator Africa Oil said that the company, its partner (Marathon Oil) and the government were still discussing the probability of an appraisal well that would offer a clear picture of gas reserves on the block.

“Plans being discussed include an up-dip location to confirm the areal extent of the gas zones tested where the full net sand interval can be intersected above the gas-water contact. The partnership is also considering a down-dip appraisal location to test an on-lapping stratigraphic wedge on the flanks of the structure which is of the same age as the zones in the nearby Ndovu-1 well which had oil and gas shows,” Africa Oil said in a statement.

Africa Oil also said it was considering drilling an appraisal well on the crest of the large Bogal structure to confirm the large potential gas discovery which is estimated to have closure over an area of up to 200 square kilometers.

The gross best estimate of prospective resources for Bogal are 1.8 trillion cubic feet of gas based on a third-party independent resource assessment. Africa Oil currently has two optional slots on the Great Wall drilling rig used to drill the Sala-1 well that are available for this appraisal program.

The Sala-1 discovery was particularly important as it significantly derisked the Anza basin.

Tullow Oil, Africa Oil discovers more oil in North Western Kenya

—August 28, 2014 by Samuel Kamau Mbote

Tullow Oil plc and its partner Africa Oil have announced a new round of successful results from a series of exploration, appraisal and testing activities conducted in Blocks 10BB and 13T onshore Kenya.

      Amosing-2 appraisal well

The Amosing-2 well in Block 10BB is the first appraisal well on the Amosing field discovered in January 2014, and was drilled from the Amosing-1 well pad. The well was deviated 1,350 metres towards the northeast and downdip from the discovery well to calibrate the oil-water contacts of the several oil pools identified in Amosing-1. The Amosing-2 well encountered up to 30 metres net oil pay. As planned, the well was then sidetracked back to some 400 metres from the discovery well to provide additional insight into reservoir distribution in the area and for use in interference testing, planned to start later in 2014. The Amosing-2A sidetrack encountered up to 90 metres net oil pay in several oil pools.

The Sakson PR5 rig drilled Amosing-2 to a final depth of 2,878 metres and the Amosing-2A sidetrack to a final depth of 2,165 metres. The rig will now be moved to explore the southern extent of the South Lokichar basin to drill the Ekosowan-1 well in September 2014, 11.9 km south east of the Amosing-1 well.

      Ngamia-3 appraisal well

The Ngamia-3 well in Block 10BB continued the appraisal of the Ngamia field. The well was successfully drilled 1.6 km north of the Ngamia-1 discovery well and encountered 150 metres of net oil pay in both Auwerwer and Lokone reservoirs. The well has been suspended for likely use in future interference testing, appraisal and development activities.

The Marriott PR46 rig drilled Ngamia-3 to a final depth of 2,700 metres. The rig will now be moved to continue the appraisal of the Ngamia field, drilling the Ngamia-4 and Ngamia-5 wells which are planned to be used in an interference testing programme in the Ngamia field.

      Etom-1 exploration well

The Etom-1 well in Block 13T is the most northerly well drilled to date in the South Lokichar basin, 6.5 km north of the previous Agete-1 discovery. The well encountered approximately 10 metres of net oil pay, extending the proven oil basin significantly northwards. Based on this result the ongoing 550 sq km 3D seismic survey in the South Lokichar basin has been extended to cover a further 247sq km in this northern area, including several similar prospects which are scheduled to be drilled in 2015.

The Weatherford 804 rig drilled the Etom-1 well to a final depth of 2,000 metres. The well will be suspended for use in future appraisal and development operations, following which the rig will move to drill the Kodos-1 well in September 2014 to test the first of several prospects identified in the neighbouring Kerio Basin.

“We are quite pleased with the Etom discovery which extends the proven petroleum system to the northern portion of the Lokichar basin and derisks several large prospects in that area. We are also encouraged that the Ngamia and Amosing appraisal wells have found thick reservoir and pay intervals that will give us further confidence that these two fields to anchor our development project and look forward to the results of the extended wells tests to confirm the reservoir performance,” says Africa Oil CEO Keith Hill.

      Ewoi-1 flow test

The SMP-105 testing/workover rig recently completed testing activities at the Ewoi-1 well. The well demonstrated good permeability in the water-bearing Lokone reservoirs and a programme to target these updip is under consideration. Flow rates from the Auwerwer reservoir DST were limited to around 50 bopd, potentially due to the high wax content and shallow depth of this DST.

The lightweight rig is currently testing the Twiga South-2A appraisal well where two to three tests are planned.

“Etom-1 has successfully extended the South Lokichar rift bounding fault play northwards and we look forward to testing the southern area of the basin with Ekosowan-1. Continued success in appraisal of the Ngamia and Amosing fields reinforces our belief that the South Lokichar basin holds very considerable potential which we hope to replicate in additional basins. The next basin-opening test will be in the neighbouring Kerio Basin, with the Kodos-1 well expected to spud in early September,” he said.

According to exploration director at Tullow Oil Angus McCoss the company now looks to testing the neighbouring Kerio basin which it hopes will replicate the success seen in the South Lokichar basin.

The Kodos well is the first well to be drilled in the highly prospective Central Kerio basin in Kenya Block 10BB and will target a three way dip closed feature against the main basin bounding fault similar to the Ngamia/Amosing/Twiga trend in the Lokichar Basin.

The Ekosowan well is located on the western ‘string of pearl’ prospects in the Lokichar basin and is directly south of the Ngamia and Amosing fields which have demonstrated the thickest net pay and reservoir in the basin. Both wells are expected to be completed in the fourth quarter.

Two additional new basin opening wells are planned to spud before the end of the year in the North Kerio Basin (Epir-1) and the North Turkana Basin in Block 10 BA (Engomo-1).

Tullow Operates Blocks 10BB and 13T with 50% equity and is partnered by Africa Oil Corporation, also with 50%.

Africa Oil Operational Update and Conference Call

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwired - Aug. 28, 2014) - Africa Oil Corp. ("Africa Oil" or the "Company") (TSX:AOI)(OMX:AOI) is pleased to provide an update on its operations in Kenya and Ethiopia.

The Etom-1 well in the Lokichar Basin on Block 13T (Kenya) has reached a total depth of 2000 meters and has discovered oil in the primary Auwerwer and Upper Lokhone target formations. The well encountered a range of between 5 and 20 meters of potential net pay sands based on wireline logging and drilling data. Oil has been recovered in MDT sample chambers which appears to be of similar quality to the oil found in the discoveries to the south. There is an additional 400 meters of porous sands in the Auwerwer and Lokhone Formations which also confirms the extension of thick reservoir sections into the northern portion of the basin. Oil and gas shows were noted throughout during drilling of the well confirming the extension of the petroleum system to the northern portion of the basin. Based on these positive drilling results, the partnership has agreed to extend the current 3D seismic survey over the northern portion of the basin where several additional large prospects have been identified by 2D seismic. The well has been suspended for potential future drill stem testing. Africa Oil holds a 50% working interest in this block, which is operated by Tullow Oil plc ("Tullow") which holds the remaining 50% interest.

Drilling on the Ngamia-3 and Amosing 2/2A appraisal wells also in the Lokichar Basin on Block 10BB (Kenya) has also been completed. The results of these wells appear to confirm the thickness and lateral extent of the Auwerwer sands at both locations and also has extended the known oil column significantly downdip which will extend the proven field areas. The range of thickness of Auwerwer reservoir quality sands in all six penetrations of these two structures is between 146 and 220 meters and the sands appear consistent over the field areas. Net pay was encountered over multiple reservoir zones over a gross interval ranging from 500 to 1500 meters. Pressure data seems to indicate that there could be pressure communication between many of these reservoirs. The upcoming extended well test programs on both of these fields will be designed to evaluate reservoir connectivity and help constrain estimates of flow rates and recovery factors for field development planning which are expected to commence early in 2015. Africa Oil holds a 50% working interest in this block, which is operated by Tullow which holds the remaining 50% interest.

Well testing has been completed on the previously announced Ewoi discovery on the eastern flank of the Lokichar Basin in Block 10BB (Kenya). The main zone of interest tested approximately 50 barrels of oil per day from the lower Lokhone sands which were relatively thin and of moderate reservoir quality. Data from the well may suggest that the wellbore may have been located in a downdip position and the Company is considering updip appraisal opportunities on this structure. The lightweight rig is currently testing the Twiga-2A appraisal well where two to three tests are planned.

The Company plans to move the two rigs that are completing drilling operations on the Etom and Amosing locations to the Kodos and Ekosowan locations and both are expected to spud in September. The Kodos well is the first well to be drilled in the highly prospective Central Kerio basin in Kenya Block 10BB and will target a three way dip closed feature against the main basin bounding fault similar to the Ngamia/Amosing/Twiga trend in the Lokichar Basin. The Ekosowan well is located on the western 'string of pearl' prospects in the Lokichar basin and is directly south of the Ngamia and Amosing fields which have demonstrated the thickest net pay and reservoir in the basin. Both wells are expected to be completed in the fourth quarter. Two additional new basin opening wells are planned to spud before the end of the year in the North Kerio Basin (Epir-1) and the North Turkana Basin in Block 10 BA (Engomo-1).

The Company has also spud an appraisal well on the previously announced Sala gas discovery in Block 9 onshore Kenya. The Sala-1 drilled a large 80 square kilometer anticlinal feature along the northern basin bounding fault in the Cretaceous Anza graben and encountered several sandstone intervals which had oil and gas shows. An upper gas bearing interval tested dry gas at a maximum rate of 6 mmcf/d from a 25 meter net pay interval. The Sala-2 appraisal well is designed to test the updip extent of this main reservoir sand. A lower interval at Sala-1 also tested gas at low rates of dry gas from a 50m potential net pay interval and will also be accessed at this up-dip location. Africa Oil is the Operator of Block 9 with a 50% working interest. Marathon Oil Kenya Limited B.V. has the remaining 50% interest.

In Ethiopia, the Company continues to advance plans to commence a 2D seismic program in the Rift Basin Area Block which is expected to start later this year. The Company and its partners have also indicated their intent to enter the next exploration period in the South Omo block. Due to the extensive drilling and seismic program, no additional work commitments will be required during this period. The partnership plans to evaluate the four wells drilled to date to determine if additional drilling is warranted and, if so, which portion of the block is considered most prospective. The Company has informed the Ethiopian Government and its partners that it intends to withdraw from Blocks 7 and 8 in the Somali region. Although the El Kuran-3 well did demonstrate some oil and gas potential, the Company does not feel it is warranted to continue efforts at this time due to concerns over reservoir quality and commerciality.

Africa Oil CEO Keith Hill stated, "We are quite pleased with the Etom discovery which extends the proven petroleum system to the northern portion of the Lokichar basin and derisks several large prospects in that area. We are also encouraged that the Ngamia and Amosing appraisal wells have found thick reservoir and pay intervals that will give us further confidence that these two fields to anchor our development project and look forward to the results of the extended wells tests to confirm the reservoir performance. Our development activities are progressing in support of a Lokichar basin oil development project sanction at the end of 2015/early 2016. We have an exciting exploration portfolio in the new basin opening wells, of which we plan to drill 6 by the end of next year. We are confident that our early successes will be repeated in at least one additional new basin as we move forward to develop the large reserves we have discovered to date."

The Company will hold a conference call to discuss these latest results on Thursday, August 28, 2014 at 7:30 a.m. PDT or 10:30 a.m. EDT or 4:30 p.m. CEST). A presentation will be available for viewing on the Company's website: http://www.africaoilcorp.com/s/presentations.asp
