PLUG POWER, AND PROFIT, IN THE SAME SENTENCE
The fuel cells being made at Plug Power Inc. could generate profit for the upstate New York company by mid-2014, investors learned on Nov. 14.
Plug Power (Nasdaq: PLUG) has never turned a profit in its 16-year history.
The company is well-known among Capital Region residents for its stock's sudden surge, and then abrupt collapse, at the turn of the 21st century.
Plug Power went public at $15 a share in 1999, two years after it was founded.
The stock rocketed, fueled by the dot-com craze and hype about the young fuel-cell industry. The peak came in early 2000, at just shy of $150 a share.
The dot-com bubble burst. The fuel-cell mania fizzled (it was probably premature).
Fast-forward to Nov. 14. Plug's stock rose 21 percent—to 67 cents a share. Nasdaq has been warning Plug that it is in danger of being delisted.
Andy Marsh, the president and CEO of Plug Power, believes that won't be necessary. He expects the stock to climb above Nasdaq's $1 minimum on its own.
Speaking with investors on Nov. 14, Marsh laid out quite a positive forecast.
In just the last five weeks, Plug Power has booked orders worth $14 million. That's $2 million more than the orders booked over the first nine months of this year.
"It's clear Plug Power has the momentum back in material handling," Marsh said. He was referring to the company's primary source of revenue, fuel cells that power fork lifts.
One analyst asked Marsh how much better the fourth quarter could get.
"I think it easily could be 2 to 3 times higher," Marsh replied.
A growing business with tire company Bridgestone could become an account worth $7 million or $8 million a year, Marsh added.
Next month, Marsh said, Plug Power will reveal new customers, and new revenue tied to hydrogen fueling services, and fuel piping.

No risk no fun
