PARK RIDGE, Ill. — Stepping up the race to bring e-mail to vehicles, two of the world`s biggest carmakers have formed partnerships to develop better voice-recognition systems.
Ford Motor Co. will invest $20 million in Lernout & Hauspie to develop speech technologies while General Motors is teaming with General Magic Inc. and Nuance Communications to continue work on voice-recognition systems. In a separate move, Delphi Automotive Systems has allied with Lernout & Hauspie to put voice recognition in a Palm V handheld computer and docking station that links cars to the Net.
The race to create more effective speech systems is now seen as critical for automakers. Several of them, most notably Ford and GM, have said they are devoted to an "eyes-on-the-road, hands-on-the-wheel" philosophy as they work to incorporate e-mail capabilities into automobiles.
"When the Web first emerged, people talked about GUIs [graphical user interfaces]," said Mike Peterson, director of the Virtual Advisor program at OnStar, GM`s provider of cellular-based information services. "Now, as voice recognition emerges in automobiles, everyone`s talking about VUIs (voice user interfaces)."
(12/21/99, 2:53 p.m. EST)
REDWOOD CITY, Calif. — Phone.com Inc., the pioneer of Wireless Application Protocol (WAP), has made a stock offering worth approximately $285 million to acquire @Motion Inc. (Redwood Shores, Calif.), a developer of voice portal technology. Phone.com plans to integrate @Motion`s Internet Voice Portal technology into the MyPhone personal portal and the Up.Link Server suite WAP 1.1 platform.
The goal of Phone.com (formerly known as Unwired Planet Inc.) is to create a unified phone/PDA platform capable of handling WAP, short message service, and enhanced circuit voice capabilities such as unified messaging and voice recognition. The resultant integrated product will compete in part with products from vendors such as General Magic Inc. and Wildfire Inc. Phone.com picks up 40 employees with its acquisition of @Motion, 30 of whom are engineers.

mein Kursziel gilt weiterhin.

Hallo GMGC Fans,
Wer selbst sehen will:
http://quotes.freerealtime.com (Anmeldung erforderlich).

Ignition Makes First Investment
With a Stake in Start-Up etrieve
By REBECCA BUCKMAN
Staff Reporter of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL
Ignition Corp., the new, high-profile company that funds wireless Internet
start-ups, is expected Monday to announce its first investment: A stake in
etrieve Inc., a small Hillsboro, Ore., firm that lets people retrieve and
respond to e-mail messages over the phone.
Ignition, formed earlier this year by several ex-executives of Microsoft
Corp. and Craig McCaw`s telecommunications businesses, is leading a
$13 million investment in etrieve, a company founded two years ago by
two former Intel Corp. officials. Other investors include Softbank Venture
Capital and Madrona Venture Group.
Etrieve`s service, based on hot "text to speech" technology, will launch
Monday. It is the latest high-tech response to people`s urge to check their
e-mail while they are out of the office, and is targeted at busy professionals
who rely on e-mail more than traditional voice mail.
But unlike some other mobile messaging programs, which also allow users
to dial a central phone number and have their e-mail messages read to
them in a computer-generated voice, etrieve works with a user`s e-mail
address and synchronizes with Microsoft`s ubiquitous Outlook mail
program, said etrieve Chairman and Chief Executive Mike Maerz.
The service also lets users prioritize the messages that will be read to them,
filtering out unneeded missives. Its technology allows users to listen to
lengthy e-mail attachments, something not possible with wireless messaging
devices such as the popular Blackberry product made by Research in
Motion Ltd., analysts said.
By using a cellular phone to listen to messages, "you don`t have to be
looking at a screen if you`re driving your car," said Elliott Hamilton, a senior
vice president of telecommunications-research firm Strategis Group in
Washington. Users also can verbally respond to messages over the phone;
the responses show up on recipients` computer screens in an audio file.
Companies offering similar services include Onebox.com, recently bought
by Phone.com Inc., and the Portico Virtual Assistant service from
General Magic Inc. "Everybody`s playing around with different models,"
said Yankee Group analyst Mark Lowenstein. "No one knows which one
will be the successful one."
Etrieve could get a boost, though, from the involvement of Ignition. The
quasi-venture capital firm, based in Bellevue, Wash., has scrutinized 300
business plans in the wireless Web arena since March, said managing
director Jon Roberts. The company -- capitalized with $140 million from
outside investors and the firm`s founders -- has already made a handful of
investments in small companies, Mr. Roberts said, but etrieve is the first
one with a product ready for launch.
Ignition is searching for companies with wireless technology that can be
brought to market, not services that are dependent on yet-to-be-built
broadband networks, Mr. Roberts said. Ignition wants to form "deep
partnerships" with its companies, instead of offering financing and a vote on
the board, he added.

looking at a screen if you`re driving your car," said Elliott Hamilton, a senior
vice president of telecommunications-research firm Strategis Group in
Washington. Users also can verbally respond to messages over the phone;
the responses show up on recipients` computer screens in an audio file.

IBM) abgeschlossen hatte, zeigt also doch, wie bereits beschrieben (historie) Signalwirkung.
Gegenwart
Nuance Communications Inc. (NASDAQ: NUAN).

General Magic: Compelling Growth, Attractive Valuation: We believe General Magic`s stock is significantly
undervalued relative to peers in the speech recognition and voice applications market. For example, speech-

SOS in Swedish
Stockholm, Sweden; Sept. 7 — Dit, dit, dit...dah, dah, dah...dit, dit, dit; it`s a pattern instantly recognized by anyone who
ever learned Morse Code: SOS, the universal distress call. Now, that distress-call concept is being used by Sweden`s
Autoliv and Volvo, who have teamed up to make what are reputedly the world`s safest cars even safer. They have
introduced "Volvo On Call."
It`s a GPS-based (Global Positioning Satellite) system that sends an SOS at a critical time when seconds really count -
right after an accident. Crash statistics graphically show that the first moments after a serious accident can mean the
difference between life and death. That`s where Volvo On Call comes into the picture. If you`re in a serious crash and can`t
act, the system fires off a distress call instantly.
The system, which is a joint development of Autoliv, Volvo and Ericsson, continually stores the GPS location of your car
much like the "black boxes" in aircraft store critical information. That means that your location is known to within a few
square feet.
In a crash serious enough to deploy any of the vehicle`s airbags, the system automatically sends a text message to the
Volvo On Call alarm center. At the same time, a cellular-phone voice line is opened to the vehicle so that an operator can
attempt to talk to you and get more information. (In areas with limited cellular coverage, a satellite link is included in the
system.) If you are unable to respond, the center notifies the nearest emergency-response center to dispatch an
ambulance.
The system`s integrated cell phone automatically stores your position. That way, the Volvo On Call center still can get your
position, even if the GPS unit is destroyed or disabled in the crash, or if communication with the GPS satellite is lost. The
phone uses the latest Ericsson technology, which has been crash tested to beyond the g-loads sustained in automotive
accidents. It also has its own back-up system with an integrated antenna and emergency battery. So it can function if the
situation is catastrophic enough that main power from the car`s electrical system is severed.
The system also has an "SOS" button for alerting the center in the event of other emergencies, such as an assault.
Another button gets assistance in the event of traffic jams, breakdowns or simply getting lost; and the system can locate a
stolen vehicle even if the phone is switched off.
Volvo On Call was rolled out as an option on the S60, the Swedish offering for younger, upscale buyers. It also will be
offered on the S80, V70 and Cross Country models.
In related news, General Motors has extended its OnStar system in a technology transfer with Toyota. The
Lexus LS 430, Toyota`s new flagship sedan, will have "Lexus Link," a specially personalized version of the
time-tested system first offered on Cadillacs. In addition to the standard OnStar features, Lexus Link will offer
premium services such as a taxi assist if you need a ride to a hotel, plus other concierge services if your Lexus
is undriveable. The LS-430 will be available in October.
Honda also has embraced OnStar technology. Earlier this year, they announced that they will offer the GM
system in both Honda and Acura lines. Look for it in the 2002 Acura RL luxury sedan.
In the four years since General Motors introduced this trend-setting technology, the convergence of cellular
telephony and global-positioning information has revolutionized automotive safety. GM, for instance, currently
offers OnStar on 31 models across their entire product lineup. Other manufacturers have similar systems; and
now Volvo, Honda and Toyota are adding the technology to their offerings. This proliferation is only going to
increase, because it`s very comforting to know that, from a simple breakdown to a life-threatening crash, these
systems can find and help you when the chips are down. —

GMGC is a sales channel for Speechworks.
GMGC as a professional services firm (in part, and a growing part) is a sales channel for all of the speech technology
companies. I have run a professional services firm (facilities management) for twenty years and can tell you that many
companies with $billions per year in revenues (including Microsoft) have been perfectly willing to call us their "partners."
They call on us to sell; they are not all that interested in hearing our advice on how to develop their products. Our demise
would be of little concern to them; someone would soon take our place. But for now we are a channel for them for a few
tens of millions each year, and so they are nice to us.
GMGC will be making decisions for big clients on whose technology to include in the total solutions that GMGC engineers
(using components from Nuance, Speechworks, etc.).
The Nuance and Speechworks relationships are useful but they will not be looking to GMGC for development assignments
for VR or TTS. GMGC cut research by 2/3 over the past year. Engineering solutions is much different than developing
technologies. The more "total" your solutions are, the less of your own proprietary technology you have to put into them.
GMGC should have weekly opportunities for the next four months to do PR on their relationships, on first IBM channel
sales, and on the roll-out of product to their (almost only) paying customer, Onstar. I am counting on those items to fuel the
stock momentum until February. By Q2 2001 the concept stock period will be over(about time after eleven years), and
revenue growth will become the focus for valuations.
GMGC, an aging debutante of VUI society, should use these next two quarters to get some wealthy geezers to hand over
some equity investment dollars (secondary public offering perhaps). Her condition is not so desperate that she has to be
married off, but that could happen too.
GMGC is in a far better position than at year-end 1999 (as the stock soared on Onstar news) because of IBM and other
relationships. However, technology valuations are sharply reduced after a huge NASDAQ selloff, so returning to the $15
level by March (for a fourth time in five years) will take some good fortune.

I think your Microsoft analogy is legitimate. There are plenty of companies that Microsoft has "partnered" with over the
years. Some have been relegated to the ash-heap of history. Other partners include companies like Intel, and a whole host
of others who have got rich beyond their wildest dreams, purely off the self-interest of the behemoth, Microsoft. Was
Microsoft doing these partners a favour? No, it was helping itself, and to that end was making its useful partners very rich
in the process.
All of which leads to fundamental point that General Motors, IBM, Nuance and Speechworks are all giant or soon to be
giant companies that need GMGC as a partner because GMGC is the best VUI, bar none, in the marketplace. This does
not mean that every transaction of every company will involve General Magic technology, but the company needs only a
small piece of the multi-billion dollar speech technology pie to legitimately justify a valuation in the $20-$30 range.
Barring a total market collapse, I am betting we will see those prices in the next 12-16 months.
I would hate to be short.

Hi Wazzowik!

Automotive Leaders Meet to Discuss a Potential $50 Billion Industry.........
Sep 19, 2000 06:59 AM ET
SAN JOSE, Calif., Sep 19, 2000 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- EyeForAuto, (
www.eyeforauto.com ) announced today the industry leaders on telematics speaking at
the EyeForAuto USA 2000 event. The Conference takes at the Fairmont Hotel in San
Jose on Nov 29 - Dec 1.
Attendees and speakers at EyeForAuto USA 2000 will discuss the latest hot topics in
telematics and wireless applications for automotive manufacturers, suppliers and
associated companies.
"Automotive telematics is the hottest new technology for automotive customer
relationship management, driver assistance and road safety for manufacturers,
automotive suppliers and technology companies by 2002," Says Toby Webb, CEO of
EyeForAuto.
"Consumers and automotive companies alike are beginning to realize that wireless
communication for vehicles opens up a whole new medium of entertainment and
interactivity for drivers, and a whole new profit opportunity for manufacturers, auto
suppliers and content and technology providers. By 2010, this is likely to be a $50 Billion
industry, and companies that are not involved now will miss out in a huge emerging
market."
"We`re already seeing the major Manufacturers setting up spin off telematics divisions to
deal with this whole new market in the coming months and years. This is not a side issue
for both the automotive industry or mobile content providers -- we`ll see more and more
partnerships in the next few months, in just the same way as we did with automotive
online CRM last year," says EyeForAuto`s Webb, an industry expert in the field.
Attendees of the Conference will discuss the key issues with CEOs and other Senior
Executives from ATX Technologies, Lear Corporation, Onstar Communications,
Mercedes-Benz USA, Toyota Motor Sales USA, Motorola Telematics Communications
Group, Johnson Controls, Siemens Automotive, Collins and Aikman Corporation,
Webrasca Mobile Technologies and Denso North America to name a few. Case studies
of both manufacturers and technology providers will provide an insight into where the
industry is moving in 2001 and beyond.

Gruß und stay long

Hier findet man eigentlich jede

Press Release
General Magic Announces magicTalk Voice Ecosystem: Empowering Customers With Freedom of Choice
Comprehensive Community of Leading Technology Partners Allows General Magic to Create Customized End-To-End Voice Solutions From Best-Of-Breed Providers
SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 19, 2000-- General Magic, Inc. (Nasdaq:GMGC - news), a leading voice application service provider, today unveiled at SpeechWorks Conversations User Group Conference and Internet Telecom Expo, its magicTalk(TM) Voice Ecosystem, a community of strategic business partners that expands magicTalk`s voice platform and hosting capabilities and enables General Magic to rapidly design, deliver, and host best-of-breed customized voice solutions for customers in the enterprise, telecommunications and Internet markets. A network of top-tier industry players, the magicTalk Voice Ecosystem is comprised of the leading companies in telephony and speech technology including Dialogic, Fonix, IBM, Nuance and SpeechWorks.
``The magicTalk Voice Ecosystem is the natural evolution of the open architecture of our voice platform,`` said Danny Lange, chief technology officer at General Magic. ``Whether a customer is looking for the most robust solution, the most cost efficient, or easiest to scale, General Magic offers its customers access to the most current and innovative technologies available. Our initial relationships have focused on the key players in telephony and speech technology, but we fully expect to expand the Voice Ecosystem to include companies who offer content services, business applications and network infrastructure.``
``General Magic has been a relentless innovator in speech for years, blending personalization and user interface design far beyond the generic, vendor-based shells that newer players have adopted,`` said Mark Plakias, vice president of voice and wireless at the Kelsey Group. ``The Ecosystem approach addresses the two most important issues for companies with high-volume potential -- transparency to the recognizer in use, and scalablity.``

Gartner Says GM In-Vehicle
Internet Access Has Potential
to Generate New Revenues
SAN JOSE, Calif.-- With Internet access becoming more mobile,
automobile manufacturers have a great opportunity to receive additional
revenue with in-vehicle Internet access, according to Gartner Group Inc.
And General Motors is now planning to make inroads into offering Internet
access in its automobiles.
The company announced its Telematics strategy that will ultimately offer
Internet access in cars for the first time. The company will increase the
breadth of its satellite-based OnStar communications service through the
“Virtual Advisor” and the offering of the “Infotainment” system in selected
Cadillac models.
“Operating in a mature market, car manufacturers are looking for new ways
to generate revenue,” said Thilo Koslowski, senior analyst in Gartner`s
e-Business Services group with lead responsibility for the automotive
sector. “Subscription-based services like GM`s OnStar is a very promising
idea to create revenue. Although other car manufacturers are planning to
offer similar services to consumers, GM currently is the leader in this area.”
Beginning in the fall of this year, the “Virtual Advisor” will allow drivers to
perform voice-activated personal calling and give them access to
Web-based information like stocks, sport and traffic news. The
“Infotainment” system will be able to read e-mails to the driver, display the
e-mail text on a screen and offer download capabilities to a handheld
computer. In addition, the “Infotainment” system will offer navigation support
and an advanced audio system. To ensure vehicle safety, both the OnStar
“Virtual Advisor” and the “Infotainment” systems will be voice controlled.
A recent Gartner survey based on 40,000 household interviews showed that
70 percent of the households who bought a new car in the last six months
have a cell phone and 65 percent have active Internet users. By
comparison, in the average household, cell phone penetration is 50 percent,
and active Internet users is 48 percent.
“Our research shows that most car buyers are comfortable and experienced
in using new interactive communication technologies in their daily life,” said
`Koslowski. “Since most people spend a significant amount of time
commuting in stop and go traffic every day, in-vehicle voice operated
Internet access might be a useful alternative to the `passive` radio. The
ability to listen to a business related e-mail while commuting might help to
reduce a person`s workload in the office. While driving home a person can
check the latest online weather report and call their family to discuss
weekend plans -- all voice activated and hands free.”
Gartner research also showed that among all new car buyers, those
consumers who spent between $50,000 and $55,000 on their last car
purchase show the highest Internet and cell phone penetration with 94.2
percent and 93.7 percent, respectively, which validates GM`s plans to
initially introduce the new systems primarily in its premium brands.
Additional information on the automotive online industry is available to
subscribers of Gartner`s e-Business Services. These programs are part of a
wide range of Gartner services examining the e-business industry. These
programs are designed to help senior executives, strategic planners and
investors capitalize on emerging opportunities by providing research and
analysis on electronic commerce and Internet marketplaces. Additional

IBM setzt nun Spracherkennung in seinen WEB-Servern ein:

Intel to sell servers for voice-powered Web sites
By Michael Kanellos
Staff Writer, CNET News.com
September 26, 2000, 4:40 p.m. PT
Intel will sell new servers that will allow consumers to retrieve stock quotes, weather updates or pricing information from Web sites using just a phone.
The new servers, part of the NetStructure line of server appliances, essentially simplify and improve how Web sites can be navigated by verbal commands rather than typed commands. With this sort of technology, consumers can ask for technical assistance from support desks through cell phones, and a computer with an automated human voice will spit back the answer.
Technically, Intel is selling a server "blade," a computer board populated with processors and the necessary software that slides into an existing server. The blade, however, functions like an ordinary server appliance.
"Think of it as voice navigation of the Internet," said John Miner, vice president and general manager of Intel`s communications products group. "You need to reach all customers, not just those using visual access devices."
Potential markets include automotive applications, where voice commands are the only practical and safe way to operate a device.
Along with the hardware, Intel will also market network design and other consulting services. Seven months ago, the company quietly created a professional services organization designed to promote the NetStructure line. The strategy mirrors larger consulting build-ups at, among others, Sun.
"We have a set of product services that go with all of our NetStructure servers," said Miner.
Equipment for creating voice-enabled web sites are already available. Tellme and Telera, for example, already use voice-activated servers from Intel, noted Howard Bubb, a vice president in the Communications Product Group. One of the goals with the new servers is to take the pain out of adopting voice activation by condensing all, or most, of the necessary technology into a prepackaged server.
A dual processor Voice Portal Platform server, for instance, can converse with up to a 100 consumer simultaneously and understand thousands of words. Three to four years ago, voice-activated servers could only handle roughly 24 callers and understand 20 words.
Installing a dedicated server for voice traffic also eases the burden on centralized servers, which are getting swamped by increasing traffic demands.
"The Internet isn`t well planned," said Miner.
While Intel will sell the servers to corporations, a major target audience will be application service providers and hosting companies. "It is so much more economical to share these resources than having every corporation own its own gear," said Bubb.
One of the key elements of the new servers is software from Dialogic that improves how data is shuttled between a digital signal processor and the main processor inside the server, said Bubb. Intel acquired Dialogic last year. Bubb was the former CEO.
Since 1998, Intel has been aggressively trying to expand its operations beyond PC processors. Last spring, for example, the company created an online hosting service. Intel has spent over $6 billion and bought more than 20 companies in the process.
While the results have been mixed so far, the NetStructure line seems to be one of the more successful efforts. Intel has already released roughly 30 products and services under the brand, which emerged in February.

Internet, Internet Everywhere
It started at our desktop computers, spread to TVs, cell phones, and handheld
devices. Now the Net is coming to our automobiles too… (Instock, New York)
New York City - Oct 3 - Recently Motorola`s chairman, Christopher Galvin, gave the
keynote speech for a group of several hundred professional money managers in
New York. Such a large audience, representing billions of dollars of investment
capital, offered a great opportunity to get the word out about what’s new and
exciting at Motorola. With so many topics to choose from, it is noteworthy that he
decided to talk about the company’s work in telematics, or bringing the Internet to
automobiles.
While some people view their cars as a place for quiet meditation, many people are
figuring up how many work hours are lost each week while they commute. This
loss is about to be rectified. Wireless technology is transforming the car into a
multimedia data center and productivity tool.
With the Internet-connected car, drivers will be able to get where they are going
faster. Mr. Galvin spoke about a variety of examples. A global positioning system
will pinpoint our exact location, while an Internet-based traffic map processes data
from roadside sensors to alert us of any problems on the road. Is there a traffic
jam up ahead? No problem, the Internet connection will provide real-time navigation
assistance to suggest the best route to avoid traffic. Once we reach our
destination, the navigation software will direct us to an empty parking space. We
will be able to check on our flight, dinner reservations, or a variety of personalized
concierge services from the Net.
Who thinks their car radio could use a little improvement? High-speed wireless
connections will offer a large variety of clear, crisp, uninterrupted music and talk
through Internet radios built into the car. Motorola already has a prototype installed
in the S-Class Mercedes.
All of this will not all happen for at least two more years, but this year the
consumer is expected to spend $4 billion to connect their cars. Estimates are for
that number to jump to anywhere between $15 billion and $24 billion by 2005.
Car designers are now trying to figure out how many gadgets they can install on
the car before drivers become too distracted. They are looking for better, easier to
use functions. GM is going to introduce a better version of OnStar, called a Virtual
Advisor, which will let users access information from a personal Web page using
voice commands. Mercedes-Benz is offering a similar service that will display the
information on a screen. Delphi Automotive Systems will have a mobile phone
productivity center, to dock a Palm Pilot or cell phone in any of three locations in the
car, and command the units to perform certain tasks.
Once we are all connected, proximity marketing will be an interesting way for
advertisers to reach us. The driver will be able to push a button when he passes a
particular store or restaurant and receive the specials of the day. It might even
dispense electronic coupons. Who doesn’t like a good bargain? Ready or not, the
car of the future is coming fast.

Hallo Leute,

@er99ich

I met and spent 20 minutes with Kevin Smith who is PR Manager for SAAB. He was summoned by the first
gentleman I spoke with, who was from GM. Encouragingly, I explained that I was a vested party in General Magic
and wanted to see the demo of Virtual Advisor. He clearly recognized the name General Magic...in fact his
associate standing next to him introduce us to Kevin as people "who know of ONSTAR through General Magic."
Kevin clearly knew of General Magic...and that was really a great feeling as a year ago no one did at the show.
SAAB had the assignment to demo Onstar. I have the PR they were handing out regarding ONSTAR and the
Virtual advisor.
Now onto the good stuff..in my very pleasant convesations with Kevin Smith, I learned the following:
Indeed ONSTAR is rolling out in the Northeast in the Q4...the plan for SAAB is to introduce ONSTAR and Virtual
Advisor only when the entire nation has the ONSTAR rollout. Kevin says that SAAB is planning the roll out on
February 1st. (yes!)
ONSTAR will be a KEY promotional element of this years consumer Auto Show tour this coming year, starting in
January in Detroit. The booth will include a BATCAVE with a BATMOBILE and a consumer demo of a fully
functional ONSTAR and VIRTUAL ADBVISOR. (yes!)
SAAB has made the hardware for the ONSTAR system standard in all 2001 cars...they plan to sell 40,000+ in
2001. The basic system will be free for 1 year. Now, here`s where it gets real interesting. The virtual advisor is
packaged with personal calling. Personal calling is provided by VERIZION. You cannot get personal calling
without virtual advisor and vice versa. SAAB owners will be given 30-60 free minutes for determining if they
want to pay for the seervice after that (a la AOL). Kevin felt that well over 50% would retain at a fee. Their PR
specifically states that their clientele have the highest level of internet use. When you make a personal call you use
minutes; when you use Virtaul Advisor you use minutes. Verizion is the central supplier so GMGC must have a
very close relationship with VERIZION (yes!)
The demo cars were all parked offsite as they had just completed a major press initiative where they took the
press on real rides thru Vegas to see first hand how well the virtual advisor works. I asked how it went. Kevin
smiled and said, "flawless." (yes!)
I asked Kevin about competition. He literally laughed. Visteon`s system is at least a year away and other as much
as three. (yes!)
Kevin just gushed with great info on how they see the Virtual Advisor growing in the future...he gave many
examples of things that have been discussed hear many times and things that I would never have thought of....like
renting a book to be read to you as you drive...or rent an album as you drive all through the virtual assistant.
Overall...wow! If I think of anything else, I`ll post.

SOURCE: Ask Jeeves, Inc.
Ask Jeeves, Nuance and General Magic Create Alliance to
Deliver Conversational, Natural Language Voice Applications
to Corporations
Leaders in Natural Language Question Answering, Speech Recognition and Voice Applications
Combine Forces to Move Beyond Menu-Driven Applications And Humanize Voice-Driven Services
EMERYVILLE, Calif., Nov. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Ask Jeeves, Inc. (Nasdaq: ASKJ - news), today announced an alliance with
Nuance (Nasdaq: NUAN - news) and General Magic (Nasdaq: GMGC - news) to enable corporations to deliver information
to their customers via the telephone using a conversational, question answering format. By combining the highest level of
expertise in natural language processing, speech recognition and voice applications and hosting, the alliance will improve
the accuracy of voice-enabled systems and provide companies with the ability to voice-enable their Web investments as
well as other business-critical information. Ask Jeeves anticipates making the resulting voice applications available to
companies in Q1 of next year. Ask Jeeves has also agreed to collaborate with both Nuance and General Magic to co-market
the voice applications they develop to Fortune 1000 corporations including telecommunications carriers and voice portals
worldwide.
The integration of Ask Jeeves` powerful natural language technology and its unique ability to understand how consumers ask
questions with Nuance`s leading speech recognition technologies and General Magic`s voice application development and
hosting services will create the next generation of voice applications for companies worldwide. The ability to voice-enable
corporate Web sites and combine natural language processing with IVR systems (interactive voice response systems)
presents an enormous opportunity for companies to rely less on cumbersome phone trees and to reduce customer dependence
on expensive, human operated call centers. Corporations will be able to provide intuitive, voice-driven customer support
using the content they have already invested in and developed. This advanced, automated voice solution will become a
critical component of the next generation call centers providing higher ROI and better customer satisfaction.
Soon, customers will be able to ask questions in full sentences via the phone such as, ``Where can I find out about after hours
trading?`` or, ``Where can I buy a laser jet printer?`` and get immediate and relevant answers from the companies they are
calling.
``As we discovered with Ask.com and with our more than 125 corporate customers, people prefer to ask for the information,
products and services they are looking for in full sentences, not keywords. With Nuance and General Magic, we will bring
that same human method of interaction to the telephone,`` said Rob Wrubel, CEO of Ask Jeeves. ``By creating one knowledge
base of questions and answers for corporations and enabling multiple modes of access to it through the PC, handheld devices
or telephones -- we efficiently link an enterprise`s employees, customers and suppliers with the information they seek
anytime, anywhere.``
``This partnership has the potential to refine the accuracy of speech recognition -- and may make a significant improvement
in companies` ability to voice-enable their Web investments and other business-critical information,`` said Gerard O`Shea,
CRM Services analyst at the Yankee Group. ``This is an important step in liberating customers from traditional models of
PCs, browsers, and search engines. With more and more people around the world using cell phones to interact with
corporations for everything from m-Commerce to customer service, corporations can not afford to come to the table late.``
Connecting People with Answers
Both Nuance and Ask Jeeves currently help hundreds of blue-chip companies, such as American Airlines, Ford, Microsoft
and TD Waterhouse to conduct business online. Through the combination of natural language processing and voice
recognition technologies, these companies will soon be able to voice-enable access to their Internet content and other
business-critical information. Their customers will be able to use the telephone to access 24-hour support and e-commerce
information and to navigate information quickly and easily by simply asking questions in conversational, natural language.
``Ask Jeeves has the largest knowledge base in the world with more than five billion questions that consumers have asked
over more than four years,`` said Ron Croen, president and CEO of Nuance. ``By leveraging Ask Jeeves` customer
intelligence and natural language technology, we will create the de facto standard for searching and navigating large amounts
of information that enterprises, portals and carriers have built using any telephone connection.``
Leveraging General Magic`s expertise in building personality-rich voice user interfaces, companies will also be able to
match their visual brands with auditory brands. General Magic will host these business solutions in its 24/7 Network
Operations Center, allowing businesses a faster time to market. General Magic will work closely with Ask Jeeves to build
an intuitive interface on its magicTalk platform that seamlessly integrates Ask Jeeves` natural language question answering
technologies and services with Nuance`s speech recognition technologies.
``General Magic`s dedication to delivering a superior voice user experience, coupled with the natural language technologies
of Ask Jeeves and Nuance, provides a powerful new solution for businesses to provide high quality customer service,`` said
Steve Markman, chairman, president and CEO of General Magic. ``Customers quickly recognize the value of conversational
user interfaces compared to the frustration of today`s menu-driven phone systems and will value the companies who
incorporate this level of service.``
Ask Jeeves` relationships with Nuance and General Magic will result in the availability of voice-driven products for the
more than 125 corporate customers worldwide that rely on Ask Jeeves for essential e-commerce and e-support services. In a
joint marketing agreement, the companies will co-distribute the solution to enterprises and voice portals worldwide. By
utilizing a larger, combined sales force, the seamless solution will be deployable and sellable by either party. Aided by Ask
Jeeves technology, Nuance will include the enhancements into its core speech recognition engine and grammars.
The Global Opportunity
While many of the world`s Fortune 500 companies have made enormous investments in their Web sites, their ability to
provide multiple modes of access to the content they`ve developed is a critical next step. For example, although Japan has
the world`s second-largest number of Internet users, with 14.5 percent of the total global online population, only 28 percent
of Japanese households had PCs in 1999. The majority of Japanese instead rely on telephones, and in particular mobile
phones, to conduct commerce and access information, products and services online. Rather than cumbersome keypad
interaction, Ask Jeeves` voice applications will enable conversational telephone interaction, dramatically increasing its
reach to customers worldwide.
About Ask Jeeves

By

Ask Jeeves, Nuance, Gen`l Magic Team Up on Voice Web
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Ask Jeeves Inc. (NasdaqNM:ASKJ - news), the
information source Internet junkies depend on to answer almost any question
users type in on its Web site, has joined forces with Nuance Communications
Inc. (NasdaqNM:NUAN - news) and General Magic Inc.
(NasdaqNM:GMGC - news) to help businesses answer spoken questions.
The three companies said on Monday they were working on products to
provide more sophisticated telephone information systems that would allow
people to get answers to questions they would normally have to ask a person
or search for on the Internet. They will sell the products to companies who
want to completely automate their customer service or change automated
systems that require typing in choices on a telephone keypad.
Ask Jeeves said it will use Nuance`s speech recognition technology to
provide answers to spoken questions.
For example, a person could say into the telephone, ``I`d like to eat in an Italian restaurant.``
The product the company is developing could process the request and a computer-generated voice would
make suggestions.
General Magic and Ask Jeeves will market and sell their voice applications and services to other companies.
These services would let customers get information over the telephone by asking for it, instead of having to use
a telephone keypad to zero in on the information they need.
General Magic will build the voice-user interface and provide hosting for the conversational, natural-language
voice applications for companies. The service will allow companies to eliminate large call centers that are
currently used to answer customer questions.
Nuance shares rose $14-1/16, or 16 percent, to $101-15/16 on Nasdaq. Shares of Ask Jeeves rose $1-5/8,
or 11 percent, to $16-11/16 in Nasdaq trading. Shares of General Magic rose 17/32, or 12 percent, to
$4-29/32 on the Nasdaq.

General Magic Revises Expectations for Fiscal Year 2000
SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 19, 2000--General Magic, Inc.
(Nasdaq:GMGC - news), a leading voice application service provider, today announced revised revenue expectations for
the year ending December 31, 2000.
The company said it expects to report revenue of approximately $11 million for the fiscal year 2000, about $1 million below
previous estimates.
``While our results for the fiscal 2000 year fell short of our expectations, we will have achieved in excess of a 500%
increase over the 1999 fiscal year,`` said Steve Markman, the company`s president and chief executive officer.
The company learned today that one of its customers, Global Services Network, Inc., did not secure additional funding

funding delays, which are consistent with the general slowdown in the availability of financing for emerging companies,
revenue from these sources is no longer expected in the current quarter.
``We are optimistic that we will continue to win new business opportunities,`` continued Markman. ``We are building
industry leading voice applications in an emerging market. We believe strongly that our products and services will enable
the company to be a leader in this space.``
General Magic is reviewing its 2001 growth targets and expects to give guidance early in the new year.
