Nuance and DST Systems Team Up for Voice-Driven Mutual Fund SystemsBaron Funds First of Many DST Mutual Funds Clients to Take Advantage Of New V-Commerce Service
MENLO PARK, Calif., May 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Nuance (Nasdaq: NUAN), the leader in voice interface software, announced today that DST Systems, Inc. (NYSE: DST) has added speech recognition capabilities to its mutual funds inquiry and transaction processing service. Baron Funds is the first to deploy the new V-Commerce(TM), or voice-driven e-commerce service.
DST`s innovative service employs voice interface software from Nuance and interactive voice response (IVR) technology from Edify Corp., a wholly-owned subsidiary of S1 Corp. It enables consumers to use intuitive spoken commands to obtain account information and fund quotes, as well as buy and sell funds.

"This enhancement isn`t just an aesthetic change to our existing touch-tone system," said Phil Stump, systems manager at DST.
"The addition of speech recognition has given the system the capability to add new features that would be too cumbersome in a touch-tone only environment. DST`s enhanced voice offering is a complement to our shareholder Internet product, and both systems are integral components in developing applications to support our shareholder self-servicing strategy."
Enterprises Reduce On-Hold Times and Speed Transactions
Corporations like Baron`s Funds receive a number of benefits from using speech recognition software. They improve customer service by offering more intuitive access to information and streamlining transactions. In addition, they can dramatically reduce costs by shortening on-hold time and overall call duration.

      Zukunftsaussichten:

Geordert in US , da Handel hier schwach.

      Hallo bull_shit,
Bin ganz Deiner Meinung.

SpeechObjects Gain Industry Support Proliferation of Reusable, Standards-Based Speech Components Drives Rapid Global Deployment of Speech Applications

      MENLO PARK, Calif., May 15, 2000 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Nuance (Nasdaq:
NUAN), the leader in voice interface software, today announced growing industry
and developer support for SpeechObjects(TM). SpeechObjects are reusable software
components that enable developers to rapidly create voice-driven applications.
To date, more than 250 SpeechObjects have been created by Nuance, a growing list
of partners and customers -- including BeVocal, Mapquest, Mitel, Redmond
Software, ShopTalk (formerly U-Access), Syntellect, and Xtime -- and the members
      of the Nuance Developer Network.

Developers can get started building speech applications by using Nuance`s 25
Foundation SpeechObjects. These components capture commonly used information
such as dates, times and credit card numbers and enable secure applications
through the use of voice authentication. They embody Nuance`s best practices in
voice interface design and can be combined to build a variety of applications.

To address the needs of the global market, Nuance will also make its Foundation
SpeechObjects available in multiple spoken languages. In the next several
months, Nuance and its international partners will bring localized versions of
the Foundation SpeechObjects to market. Brazilian Portuguese will be the first
localized implementation and will be available in the second half of 2000.

"We are thrilled to see how the availability of off-the-shelf SpeechObjects is
helping drive standards and time-to-market for voice applications," said Steve
Ehrlich, vice president of marketing for Nuance. "Just as the speech industry
has rallied around VoiceXML as a standard markup language for building speech
applications, we are seeing a complementary broad adoption of SpeechObjects."

      Jumpstart the Development Process

Using the JavaBeans component standard, SpeechObjects are portable across
platforms and can run against any speech recognition engine supporting the
public SpeechChannel API. This component-based development approach can enable
companies to cut their development times by more than 50 percent. SpeechObjects
are designed for stand-alone development and for use in conjunction with
third-party tools and other industry standards such as VoiceXML.

      Availability

The source code for the Foundation SpeechObjects is available through the
V-Commerce Alliance at www.v-commerce.com and the Nuance Developer Network at
      www.nuance.com.

SRI International Spin-off Nuance Goes Public; Innovative Technology and Funding Model Demonstrates Continued Success

MENLO PARK, Calif., May 15, 2000 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- SRI International, a
leading independent technology innovator, today announced that one of its
spin-off companies, Nuance (NUAN: NASDAQ), successfully completed an initial
public offering and recently announced record first quarter results.

SRI International has a 54-year history of innovation that includes
industry-defining technologies ranging from the computer mouse to wireless
networks. To move its technologies from the laboratory to the marketplace, SRI
licenses its technologies to start-ups such as Digital Island and forms spin-off
companies such as the newly debuted AtomicTangerine. SRI and its subsidiary
Sarnoff Corp. have formed more than 20 spin-offs in information technology,
biotechnology, healthcare, education and web-based services.

"The SRI business model is focused on high-value innovations and bringing those
innovations to market," said Curt Carlson, CEO for SRI International. "We create
the kind of industry-defining and first-of-a-kind technologies that can achieve
billion-dollar valuations - SRI is a technology incubator in markets ranging
from information technology to biotechnology and pharmaceuticals."

Nuance is the market leader in providing technology to create highly accurate,
natural language speech interfaces. As of December, more than 150 companies have
licensed Nuance`s software platform to run voice-enabled customer service
applications, and conduct V-Commerce(tm) (voice-enabled e-commerce), over the
telephone. AMR Corp.`s American Airlines unit licensed Nuance to drive its
voice-driven flight information system; United Parcel Service uses Nuance
      software to enable customers to track packages and schedule pickups via voice;
and brokerage Charles Schwab Corp. rolled out a voice-recognition system in 1996
that allows clients to get stock quotes by calling a toll-free number.

Nuance is also driving the emergence of the Voice Web, bringing the power of the
Internet to the more than 1.5 billion telephones around the world. Nuance has
partnered with companies offering voice portal services such as BeVocal and
Tellme Networks, as well as a host of content providers to enable telephone
access to Internet content, commerce and services.

      Dagegen existieren 1.000.000.000 Telefone Weltweit.

      UNBIASED CC remarks:
I just bought a little FONX...and am considering getting more. I listened to the CC to see if this was a good idea. Here are
the points I thought pertinent. I gathered my own conclusions, but I won`t post them here. This is neither hype nor heresy,
      just FYI...

      1. All debt was paid off over the last 18 months

      2. Still seeking private equity, as sales is not currently enough to support the monthly burn rate of about 1MM/month.

      3. FONX is the ONLY speech vendor in Microsoft`s Embedded Partners Program

      4. FONX is the ONLY speech vendor in Intel`s Developer Forum

      5. Outsourcing: $1.5-$1.8 million/month 18 months ago...currently $50K/month

      6. A PR firm will be retained at some point in the near future/short term. I read this as 6 months or so.

      7. FONX`s technology is unique in that it does not build upon public domain information, as does LHSP, Dragon, IBM, but
rather upon proprietary "neural network" technologies. Others in the industry cannot patent the public domain information,
but FONX has 4 issued patents, 11-13 pending, and 12 or so in progress.

      8. There have been comparison studies done of the technologies within the industry, but these were done by consumer
electronics companies and chip manufacturers, and have not been released publicly. FONX is working toward this, but
refers to the facts in #`s 3 and 4 to prove what those results imply.

      9. FONX technically has no competition in that their technology is unique and they are making product available NOW.
FONX believes LHSP to be a great company, with the ability to be dominant, BUT their PR`s promised embedded
products in the future - 6-12 months. LHSP`s algorithms currently require large processors and they have no ready
product for smaller RISC processors such as StrongARM. They will be in the embedded niche soon though.

      10. Nasdaq application might be filed within the next 12 months. (From my personal experience, it is another 3 months or
      so for approval)

One major point is that analysts predict the VR industry to be worth anywhere from $3-30 billion in 3-5 years, dependingon
whether the technologies can be made convenient and dependable. If anybody cares about my own conclusion, it is that
investing in just about ANY company with a decent VR product will be inherently profitable. At these prices, FONX may
      well be worth accumulating.

All in all, it was an educational call, not great or awesome, but perfectly acceptable.

A Basher`s Review of the CC

It you didn`t have your hopes high for specific information, you wouldn`t come away dissapointed. Carma ran a tight ship in
the polite controled tones of a radio talk-show host. After a fairly lengthy delay during which various Fonix boosters cut up
amongst themselves, Roger Dudley showed up. Roger turned out to be articulate and predictably optimistic but less than
informative where the crucial specifics are concerned.
15 questions had been scheduled beforehand which took up almost the entire QA session. NBK and another east coast
stockbroker type got to ask most of the 15 questions (I guess they`re pals with carma1) and their thrust dominated the
inquiry: will there be more dilution? - "Yes, but we hope it can be kept to a minimum etc." Someone did ask the crucial
question about independent evaluation of Fonix`s much hyped neural-net ASR. Roger said that yes, these tests have been
done by several OEMs, but confidentiality restrictions prohibit any comments etc. There was lots of that, begging off the
question because of SEC rules and private concerns about confidentiality. Like I said , the tone was upbeat but very, very
thin on specifics which is always the case with Fonix. However I did discover a hint about what sort of product Fonix is
      trying to sell.

Now some very specific questions were asked and some answers that I did not expect were given:

Here are my take on the call and my highlights:

      1. Significant revenue coming in at this point from Concierge and yes Panasonic ( not expected but welcome) but not
enough yet to sustain operation ( by the way this was a question that we were asked to skip no 13)

      2. This one is the truly great one MSFT is currently working on Product both internally and with third party that will utilize
Fonix ASR and TTS. Since fonix technology is not software base this definitely is a strong indication that there will be a
long term chip manufacturer agreement in place very soon to secure any platform development, my guess is Intel since
they will be the prime supplier of chipset to MSFT product line. He did say products..........

      3. PR agency they are looking at it as we speak and this an expense that they are willing to undertake even thru equity
      financing, great knews.

      4. Debt servicing and equity financing short term goal ie monthly is to bring cash burn rate to zero and he expects to reach
this level within twelve to eighteen months.

      5. 3 to 30 Billion that is not an industry worth that is an industry sales number, at it lowest level it is 15 times larger than
L&H current sales level, try a P/E ratio on that one.

      6. Competition as expected the answer is nobody else does it better (sounds like a James Bond movie doesn`t it), but
they know that it will get fierce if the market accept the products.

      7. The general public is not yet accustom to working ASR application or appliance, suspended disbelief if they can
succeed in generating usage, watch out.

      8. He is truly looking at a 12 month window for profit and he is consistant in his message as well as confident. The fix rate
convertible and the realisation that they have made mistakes in the past is music to my ears.

      9. There was an Asia and other potential partner that he asked us to skip, feel free to talk within yourselves.

      10. Lets not jump to conclusion on Pr`s tomorrow or even next week but lets agree on this they have built it and they will
      come.
