Die etwas reisserische Überschrift ist nicht meine Erfindung, sondern die Selbsteinschätzung der Firma.

lässt ihre Organisation mit Hilfe von Cognos aufmöbeln.

Ich halte die Firma für äusserst aussichtsreich. Zu ihren Partner gehören u.a. Microsoft, Oracle
und SAP. Auf ein Kursziel will ich mich nicht festlegen, weil ich kein Hellseher bin. Aber ich glaube,
dass der Bereich, für den Cognos Software erstellt, in der nächsten Zukunft ein unheimliches
Potenzial hat. Stichworte: ERP, Data mart, e-bussines, e-applications.

Hallo, Leute,
bin in dem Titel seit Mitte Mai 2000 aufgrund einer Empfehlung von Börse online drin(bei 37,5 E), weil mich die Fundamental-Daten wirklich überzeugt haben, ebenso der Langfrist-Chart. Meine Meinung: Kaufen und liegen lassen. Bestätigt wurde ich in meiner Meinung als kürzlich die Quartalszahlen rauskamen. Seitdem sind die Umsätze kontinuierlich angestiegen. Ich denke mal, daß hier 60 - 70 $ in diesem Jahr noch drin sein sollten. Konkurrenzfirmen sind E:Piphany (EPNY), Exchange Applications(EXAP), Business Objects(BOBJ)und Micro Strategy (MSTR). Haben sich alle recht gut entwickelt.

... habe heute eine kurze Produktdemo gesehen. Nicht schlecht - aber kann der neuen MicroStrategy-Palette konzeptionell IMHO nicht das Wasser reichen. Wer Wert auf innovative Technologie legt sollte lieber in MSTR investieren (hat auch interessanteres Kurspotential). Hätte ich Cognos, würde ich den Gewinn jetzt mitnehmen und MSTR kaufen: gleiche Branche, besseres Produkt.

Danke für den Hinweis auf MSTR, die finde ich auch sehr interessant; werde mich mal näher
mit denen beschäftigen.

Was das Kurspotenzial angeht bin ich mit Dir der Meinung, dass MSTR interessanter aussieht,
zumindest für die nächsten 4-6 Monate. Welches Produkt besser ist, weiss ich nicht, ist auch nicht
wichtig, ich denke, beide sind Spitze, beide haben ihre Kunden bzw. Partner, beide sind dick im Geschäft.
Ein kleiner Unterschied: COGNOS macht schon Gewinne!

Aber in Einem muss ich Dir vehement widersprechen: Gewinnmitnahmen bei Aktien mit intaktem
Aufwärtstrend??!!! Sowas macht man nicht, die lässt man laufen.

Desweiteren habe ich noch einige zeitungsberichte über erfolgreich gelaufene projekte mit amerikanischen behörden gefunden, u. a. die navy und die schulbehörde. jedesmal war die rede von einsparungen von mehreren millionen us$.
In amerikanischen community boards waren heute gerüchte über bevorstehende aquisitionen zu lesen.
hinzu kommt noch, daß cognos mit 56%w achstum in seinen BI-Lizenseinnahmen im ersten quartal 2000 (geendet 31.05.00) deutlich schneller und stärker als der Markt für BI wächst. die gardner group prognostiziert ein jährliches marktwachstum von 30% bis 40%.

naja, um die lange rede endlich abzuschließen. die oben aufgeführten informationen über cognos haben mich jedenfalls dazu bewegt, mir den wert nach langem zuschauen dann doch ins depot zu legen. und ich bin mir sicher, das war eine gute entscheidung.

Ich würde mich über weitere, fundierte diskussionesbeiträge zu cognos freuen.

ich habe mich mit Cognos als Firma an sich noch nicht beschäftigt, sondern kenne nur das Produkt. Das ist eigentlich nicht schlecht, aber bei weitem nicht der Überhammer. Die grossen Konkurrenten sind vor allem die Datenbankhersteller wie Oracle und Microsoft, auf deren Datenbanken die Cognos Produkte laufen. Von dieser Seite ist wohl noch zusätzliche Konkurrenz zu erwarten. Allerdings hat die Fa. in Deutschland einen recht guten Vertrieb, das macht auch was aus. Aus meiner "Anwendersicht" wären aber eher Oracle und Microsoft zu bevorzugen, weil die auch die datenbanklösungen gleich dazu liefern.

tja, ich habe leider nur die möglichkeit, das unternehmen per se zu betrachten, da mir für die produkte einfach das technische know-how fehlt.
aber, nachdem ich mir die rezensionen der kunden angeschaut hatte(www.cognos.com), war ich eigentlich der meinung, cognos habe ein absolutes top-produkt. ich verstehe die cognos software als ein tool, das in bestehende datenbanken oder erps integriert werden kann. sind die lösungen von cognos nicht plattform unabhängig?
naja, jedenfalls hoffe ich, daß noch viele, viele, viele anwender meine sicht teilen .

Wenn Du Dir diesen Chart anschaust, wirst Du feststellen, dass COGN seit (mind.) einem Jahr
auf dem 100-Tage Durchschnitt nach oben wackelt. Der GD38 steigt ebenfalls.

Mittelfristig sehe ich keine Gefahr! Dass Kurse auch mal etwas zurückgehen, ist normal, auch nach guten Meldungen.
Wichtig ist doch die Story, die in dieser Firma steckt, und die ist O.K.

Also: Keine Panik!

Von Panik weit entfernt. Aber daß Kurse direkt im Anschluß an eine gute Nachricht fallen? Na, ich weiß nicht. Und
der letzte Kursanstieg Anfang September fiel auch nicht ganz so hoch aus, wie der davor. Sicher kein Grund zur
Panik, uns sicher auch längst kein Grund zum Verkaufen, aber etwas genauer hingucken werd´ ich schon.
Grundsätzlich glaub´ ich auch an die Story, nochmehr aber an den Chart.

Cognos Gets Salt River Project Impromptu, PowerPlay Pact

OTTAWA (Dow Jones) Cognos Inc. (COGN) will provide a Web-based business intelligence product to the Salt River Project in Arizona to be rolled out to more than 800 employees enterprise-wide.

The value of the agreement wasn`t disclosed.

In a news release, Cognos said the project`s employees will use Cognos Impromptu Web Reports and PowerPlay for financial reporting and analysis, as well business measurement and planning. It said implementation of this agreement "will be the first step in supporting an enterprise data warehouse project for SRP."

The Salt River Project is a multipurpose reclamation project of about 4,200 employees serving electric customers and water shareholders in Arizona .

Cognos provides enterprise business intelligence products.

TWST: Would you begin by telling us what you include in your coverage?

Mr. Bradley: My coverage is strictly Canadian software and IT services companies. The specific companies I cover are (in descending market-cap order) CGI Group (GIB), BCE Emergis (IFM:TSE), Cognos (Nasdaq:COGN - news), Open Text (OTEX), Hummingbird (HUMC), Geac (GAC:TSE), COGNICASE (COGI), and DataMirror (DMCX). I also cover a number of smaller cap companies, which are of interest to Canadian managers but probably of little interest elsewhere.

TWST: What should investors keep in mind when they`re looking at Canadian companies?

Mr. Bradley: First, the reality is that in the Canadian software sector there are relatively few large software companies - by large I mean companies with annual sales in excess of C$100 million - and in the strict software sense that really means Cognos, Open Text, Hummingbird, Geac. All of these companies generate the vast majority of their business from outside Canada, so although they are Canadian companies, you`re not really being exposed to the vagaries of the Canadian economy with them. In the case of the four I named, 95%-97% of the revenues they derive are outside Canada - the bulk of those revenues being in the US. In fact, their future prospects are very much tied to the US, not the Canadian economy.

As you go further down the list, the dependence on export revenues becomes less true. But for most software companies in Canada, once established, they rapidly exhaust the Canadian market. They look south to the US market to develop their business further; then typically, once they`ve developed their business in the US, they tend to go to Europe, given that most companies have some capability of dealing with more than one language. Obviously, in the Canadian context the other language is French, and that capability tends to take them to Europe at some point because product localization and adapting to local market conditions is not unfamiliar to them.

Overall, the market capitalizations are relatively small by US standards. Even a company like Cognos` market cap is only US$2.5 billion. That`s large cap for Canada but probably small cap in a NASDAQ context. And these stocks tend to be less liquid in trading on the TSE than the equivalents would be in the US. However, most of the major companies I follow are actually interlisted, NASDAQ and TSE.

TWST: How did the Canadian software stocks perform in 2001?

Mr. Bradley: At the beginning of 2001 most of them were on a downward trend, really based around the negative guidance being given about future growth prospects. In the immediate aftermath of September 11, most of my companies experienced difficulties in closing sales, so they issued even more cautious guidance at that time than previously. However, from September 21 onward - which really was the bottom as far as these companies is concerned - they`ve performed very well indeed. Cognos, for example, has doubled in value - it was trading just below C$20 around the end of September; it`s now trading over $40. And Open Text and Hummingbird have both moved up about 40% over the same period. There has been a bounce in the market up to much higher levels, but clearly nowhere near the levels these companies were trading at, say, in the early part of 2000.

TWST: Now that you`ve named some of your favorite stocks, let`s look at them in detail. What`s the rationale behind Cognos?

Mr. Bradley: There are a number of factors, but let`s start with the management team, because that`s what you`re really investing in. In Cognos` case there is a stable management team with, in most cases, long tenure at the company. These people both understand the products that the company has developed and they understand the market that they`re selling them into. Off that platform, Cognos` particular products - business intelligence products, tools that help you understand the data that you have sitting in the information systems scattered over your organization - fit very neatly with the way that IT typically works in most commercial enterprises. Once in a while an organization makes a Herculean effort to implement a new corporate-wide system, and then in the years following it attempts to maximize the benefits of the investment. And one of the biggest benefits an organization can get is to extract information from all the data that`s sitting in those systems, and that`s where Cognos` business intelligence tools come in. They allow you to look at, analyze, collect and distribute all that data. The leverage that you can get is very high and the costs are clearly not as great as putting in the original transaction processing system. The benefits are very quick to achieve and very obvious and that`s a pretty easy thing to go and sell to organizations. As a result of these factors, Cognos is by far the largest vendor of business intelligence tools worldwide and it has a massive and happy customer base. The company has been profitable over the last 27 quarters. It`s seen good, solid growth in revenues. Revenues on a compounded annual growth rate over the last five years are now 26%. It`s a perennial good performer, has an excellent management team and, as I say, its products fit the market very well. It`s gone through a number of adjustments during its life: it originally was selling products for application development, then shifted into business intelligence, and is now moving on to analytical applications, basically business intelligence in a box that can speed the time that organizations can get BI implemented and working for them. So a great company, all around.

Research In Motion, Cognos In Mobile Alliance

CHICAGO -(Dow Jones)- Research In Motion Ltd. (RIMM) and Cognos Inc. (COGN) have reached an agreement for Cognos to develop mobile business intelligence applications for RIM`s BlackBerry device.

In a press release, the companies said the first output of this alliance is support for Cognos NoticeCast using BlackBerry Wireless Handhelds. Cognos will demonstrate the NoticeCast application at Comdex this week.

Cognos NoticeCast provides a way to monitor and alert information in transactional or operational systems such as enterprise resource planning, supply chain management, customer relationship management or any relational data store.
