      MSFT eyeing CMRC stake? CSFB

--11:36 am - By Tomi Kilgore

Commerce One (CMRC: news, msgs) is powering up 3 3/16, or 8 percent, to 42 15/16. Analyst George Gilbert at CS First Boston said in a research report that Microsoft (MSFT: news, msgs) may want to become part of the previously announced Commerce One/SAP alliance. Gilbert said that he "wouldn`t be surprised to see Microsoft invest in Commerce One in order to promote Windows 2000, BackOffice, and to position some of CMRC`s participating marketplaces as part of Windows.Net. Gilbert noted that Microsoft has been "woefully absent" from growth opportunities in the business-to-business arena. As part of the SAP/CMRC alliance, announced on June 14, SAP (SAP: news, msgs) said it would acquire $250 million worth of unregistered stock in Commerce One. Microsoft adding 7/16 to 79 7/8 and SAP is trimming 3/16 to 46 13/16.
