NEW YORK (CBS.MW) - Nortel shares rose Monday on reports that it was in talks to craft a $100 billion merger deal with Corning.

A report in the Wall Street Journal said the deal under discussion calls for Nortel (NT: news, msgs) to sell its optical-parts unit to Corning (GLW: news, msgs).

The deal would involve a stock swap resulting in Nortel owning 50 percent of Corning. But Corning would be the acquirer and maintain its independence.

A deal isn`t imminent and the talks may still break down. One big sticking point is Corning`s base of fiber-optics customers, some of which are competitors of Nortel.

The two companies are attempting to sort out governance issues that would address concerns by Corning clients.

Spokespeople for both companies declined to comment to the Journal, which listed "people familiar with the matter" as sources.

The possible deal reflects the consolidation pressure in the optical-parts business, and the desire by companies to tap into the high valuations of firms such as Lucent`s (LU: news, msgs) Microelectronics unit, which is valued at about $50 billion as it plans an initial public offering.

Two weeks ago, JDS Uniphase (JDSU: news, msgs) edged out Corning to buy SDL in a stock swap deal valued at $41 billion at the time.

Shares of Nortel rose 2 9/16 to 83 13/16 in Europe, according to Madoff Securities. On Friday, the stock rose 2 1/2 to 81 1/4.

Corning shares jumped 8 1/8 to 283 3/4 on Friday ahead of the news.

Nasdaq Ausblick: Geringe Aufschläge - Fusiongerüchte bei Nortel und Corning

NEW YORK (dpa-AFX) - Technologiewerte werden am Montag mit geringfügig höheren Eröffnungskursen erwartet. Unter den Anlegern dominiert nach wie vor eine abwartende Haltung, sagten Händler. In dieser Woche werden die Quartalsergebnisse von 135 Unternehmen aus dem Standard&Poor´s-Index und von acht Dow-Titeln erwartet. Im vorbörslichen Globex-Handel präsentierte sich der September-Termin des Nasdaq-100-Futures bis 14.02 Uhr mit einem Plus von 0,15% bei 3.945,0 Punkten.

Nortel haben im europäischen Handel nach Gerüchten über eine faktische Fusion mit Corning leicht zugelegt. Wie das Wall Street Journal berichtete, könnte die kanadische Nortel ihre Glasfaseroptik-Sparte an Corning für mehr als 100 Mrd. USD verkaufen. Technisch wäre Corning der Käufer, doch tatsächlich erhalte Nortel im Gegenzug mehr als die Hälfte der Anteile an Corning.
