heute“ glauben an einen deutlichen Kursanstieg der Aktie von Psion
(WKN 877326).
Obwohl die Aktie nicht am Neuen Markt notiere, ähnele der Kursverlauf
zahlreichen Papieren, die in diesem Handelssegment umgingen. Seit dem
Frühjahr sei der Titel stark unter die Räder geraten.
Inzwischen sei wieder das Niveau vom Jahresbeginn erreicht worden. Die
Briten hätten sich auf die Produktion von Taschencomputern spezialisiert.
Um die Position auf dem nordamerikanischen Markt zu stärken, beabsichtige
Psion, die in Kanada ansässige Teklogix International zu übernehmen.
Die künftige Tochter habe sich als Softwareentwickler einen Namen gemacht.
Zu den Stärken gehörten entwickelte drahtlose Netzwerkverbindungen. Der
Kaufpreis in Höhe von 365 Millionen US-Dollar werde nicht vollständig in
bar gezahlt. Ein Großteil der Akquisition gehe via Aktientausch über die
Bühne. Psion habe im vergangenen Jahr einen Umsatz von 150 Millionen Pfund
Sterling oder knapp 240 Millionen Euro erreicht. Teklogix habe es auf
Erlöse von 148 Millionen Euro gebracht, habe aus relativer Sicht aber
einen höheren Gewinn erwirtschaftet.
Mit der Softwareschmiede Symbian hätten die Briten einen hohen Trumpf im
Ärmel. Die von dieser Tochter entwickelte Betriebssoftware solle Standard
für die nächste Generation von Handys und tragbaren Computern werden.
Damit entstehe für den Branchenriesen Microsoft ein neuer Konkurrent.

Psion today announced its half year results to the London Stock Exchange. As part of the announcement Psion included a statement about Symbian`s progress which is included in its entirety below:
"Symbian`s resources and scale of operations grew substantially during the
period. Psion`s share of Symbian`s losses for the period increased to
£4.7m (1999 - £2.7m) as employee numbers rose to 520, excluding external
contractors. In April, Symbian announced that Sony had signed as a
licensee of its platform.
The major focus of development during the period has been on EPOC Release
6.0 (ER6.0), the first integration of voice functionality and data on
Wireless Information Devices. ER6.0 is functionally complete although
continued beta testing in conjunction with licensee hardware has meant that
Symbian`s final release will now be made later in the third quarter.
Product shipments are expected to commence in the first quarter of 2001.
As described previously, a further release of EPOC, ER6.1, to facilitate
packet data on GSM networks (GPRS) and enhanced Bluetooth and WAP 1.2
functionality is scheduled for release to its first licensees by the end of
this year. Products based on ER5 from Psion and Ericsson are shipping
currently and a further Smartphone product from Ericsson will ship shortly.
ER6.1 will lead to hardware shipments from the middle of 2001 and beyond.
The market for Wireless Information Devices remains to be established by
the Symbian licensees. The shareholders of Symbian have decided that
subject to good progress in the establishment of volume products and to

PSION COMMITS TO V.92 STANDARD ON PC CARDS
Psion Connect has become the world’s first PC Card manufacturer to commit to the recently announced V.92 standard. Psion Connect could be incorporating this standard across its range as early as quarter one 2001.
V.92 has significant advantages over the current V.90 standard and moves analogue modems nearer to digital speeds and capabilities.
Users of the new modems will notice several differences. Current connection times of around 30 seconds can be reduced by up to 70% because of quicker modem handshake time, so users wait less time to go online.
A feature known as ‘modem on hold’ (MOH) allows users to stay connected to the Internet while making or taking a telephone call, saving the need for an extra phone line. Missed calls or having to connect back on to the Internet could well be eliminated as a result.
The V.92 standard has been ratified by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU). It is also supported by Cisco Systems, Conexant, 3Com, Lucent Technologies and Motorola.
The new V.92 modems will initially be based on the Psion Gold Card series, a multi million selling modem that is the number one best-seller in Europe.

Danke für die Infos zum NetPad. Habe ich noch nichts von vernommen bisher. Auch die Internetadresse ist mir neu. Du scheinst nah am Unternehmen zu sein, oder sind meine Quelle im Internet so unzureichend?

Citrix MetaFrame nutzt Citrix ICA® , einen Industrie-Standard, auf dessen Basis Client-Systeme aller Art die
Anwendungsverarbeitung auf den Server verschieben können. Dabei werden nur sehr geringe Anforderungen
hinsichtlich der Netzwerk-Bandbreite gestellt. Das erweitert ganz offenkundig die Reichweite von Windows NT-, Windows 2000- und Solaris Server-basierten Anwendungen auf PCs, Mac® -Computer, Linux- und
UNIX-Workstations, Web Browser-fähige Geräte, Laptops, Set-Top-Boxen, PSION Geräte und andere
Netzwerk-Systeme.

Dies ist ein äusserst intelligenter Schachzug von PSION.
1) Auf NT laufen immer noch die meisten Server-/Client Geschäftsapplikationen - weltweit -
=> Das Psion-eigene EPOC-Betriebsystem ‘kann’ nun auch mit denen kommunizieren.
Je mehr Dienste auf dem Psion nutzbar sind, desto breiter ist der dann zur Verfügung stehende
Massenmarkt.
2) ‘Intelligent’ ist auch die Art mit dem das EPOC mit NT Verbindung aufnimmt.
Durch Citrix-Metaframe wird dem NT quasi ein Windows-Betriebsystem vorgegaukelt
(die sehr ressoucen-fressende, fehleranfällig WINDOWS-Betriebsystem können somit
umgangen werden!).
3) Metaframe geht sehr sparsam mit der Speicher- u. Übertragungskapazität um.
Daher:
A) sehr kleine, mit wenig Hauptspeicher ausgestattete Geräte können zum Einsatz kommen.
(=preiswerte Geräte),
B) auch mit der Übertragungsmenge an Daten geht Metaframe sehr sparsam um. Was wiederum
dem Surfer - der nach übertragenen Datenmengen künftig bezahlen wird (Stichw.:UMTS) -
zum zweiten Male zugute kommt (=weniger Gebühren, bei schnellerer Übertragung).
C) Metaframe gibt es als ausgereiftes Produkt in der gängigen (stationären) PC-Welt schon seit langem.
Selbst IBM bekennt sich dazu und bietet professionelle Produkte für sehr grosse
Geschäftsanwendungen an.
Ich denke, daß die Tragweite dieser Meldung in der Fachpresse und den künftigen Dienstanbietern
(bspw. drahtloses Internet-Banking) noch gar nicht erkannt worden ist.
Dies ist ein in barer Münze umzurechnender, entscheidender Wettbewerbsvorteil !
Am Rande noch bemerkt, dies ist auch eindeutig ein Angriff auf Microsofts WIN-CE-Betriebsystem.
Alle Achtung, wenn die sich das zutrauen (und so quasi durch die ‘Hintertür’) !!!

Geringe Übertragungsraten behindern Verbreitung der Wap-Technologie
Mobil ins Internet mit Taschencomputern
DAVID PRINGLE
Der britische Computerhersteller Psion Plc. hat in Europa und den USA den ersten Taschencomputer mit schnurlosem Zugang zum Internet vorgestellt. Der Revo Plus verwendet die so genannte Wireless Application Protocol-(Wap) Technologie, die für Mobiltelefone entwickelt wurde.
WSJ HB LONDON. Bisher sind Kunden beim Kauf von Wap-fähigen Telefonen zurückhaltend. Dafür gibt es mehrere Gründe: teure Geräte, zu kleine Bildschirme, die umständliche Eingabe über die Zifferntasten und sehr geringe Übertragungsraten. Trotzdem ist Psion überzeugt, dass das neue Gerät dazu beitragen wird, das Interesse am drahtlosen Internet wieder zu wecken. Gleichzeitig will das Unternehmen – Nummer zwei in Europa hinter Weltmarktführer Palm Inc. – seine Marktposition bei den kleinen so genannten Handheld-Computern verbessern.
Der Revo Plus soll zwischen 400 und 500 Euro kosten. Das Gerät hat einen größeren Bildschirm als die meisten Handheld-PCs und eine vollständige, sehr gedrängte Tastatur. Analysten kritisieren jedoch, dass der Revo Plus Defizite des mobilen Internet nicht beheben konnte – etwa die mangelnde Sicherheit. Psion-Sprecher Anthony Garvey empfiehlt denn auch nicht, derzeit Bankgeschäfte über Wap-Geräte auszuführen. Der Revo Plus verfüge aber über eine separate Zugangssoftware, die die Internet-üblichen Verschlüsselungstechnologien anwendet. Das Herunterladen einer normalen Web-Site dauere – im Gegensatz zu der speziell aufbereiteten Wap-Seite – allerdings mehrere Minuten.
Zudem seien die meisten Wap-Seiten auf sehr kleine Bildschirme zugeschnitten. Carsten Schmidt, Analyst bei Forrester Research, sagt, das größere Display bringe deshalb keine Vorteile. Psion erwartet jedoch, dass die Zahl der für die größeren Bildschirme der Taschencomputer entworfenen Seiten zunimmt, zumal auch andere Hersteller der Handheld-PCs bald Wap-fähige Versionen auf den Markt bringen wollen. Palm will seinen elektronischen Organizern in Europa Wap noch in diesem Jahr als Standard beifügen; die US-Firma Hewlett-Packard Co. und die japanische Casio Computer Co. wollen einige ihrer Geräte mit der Technologie ausstatten.
Europäer zeigen bisher wenig Enthusiasmus, via Handy ins Internet zu gehen. Der Grund: Die Übertragungsgeschwindigkeit ist sehr gering. Sieben europäische Hersteller von Mobiltelefonen melden wesentlich niedrigere Verkaufszahlen von Wap-Handys als erhofft; die Deutsche Telekom gab an, dass ihre Wap-Handy-Kunden durchschnittlich nur einmal pro Woche ins Internet gehen.
20 000 Revo Plus sollen wöchentlich hergestellt werden
Psion will wöchentlich 20 000 Revo Plus herstellen. Das Unternehmen preist den Minicomputer als schnurloses Internet-Gerät an, er hat jedoch kein eingebautes Modem. Der Kunde muss ihn via Infrarot oder Kabel mit einem herkömmlichen Handy verbinden, um unterwegs im Internet surfen zu können. Garveys Begründung: Ein Modem würde „dem Gerät zu viel Energie entziehen“.

Der britische Computerhersteller Psion Plc. hat in Europa und den USA den ersten Taschencomputer mit schnurlosem Zugang zum Internet vorgestellt. Der Revo Plus verwendet die so genannte Wireless Application Protocol-(Wap) Technologie, die für Mobiltelefone entwickelt wurde.
WSJ HB LONDON. Bisher sind Kunden beim Kauf von Wap-fähigen Telefonen zurückhaltend. Dafür gibt es mehrere Gründe: teure Geräte, zu kleine Bildschirme, die umständliche Eingabe über die Zifferntasten und sehr geringe Übertragungsraten. Trotzdem ist Psion überzeugt, dass das neue Gerät dazu beitragen wird, das Interesse am drahtlosen Internet wieder zu wecken. Gleichzeitig will das Unternehmen – Nummer zwei in Europa hinter Weltmarktführer Palm Inc. – seine Marktposition bei den kleinen so genannten Handheld-Computern verbessern.
Der Revo Plus soll zwischen 400 und 500 Euro kosten. Das Gerät hat einen größeren Bildschirm als die meisten Handheld-PCs und eine vollständige, sehr gedrängte Tastatur. Analysten kritisieren jedoch, dass der Revo Plus Defizite des mobilen Internet nicht beheben konnte – etwa die mangelnde Sicherheit. Psion-Sprecher Anthony Garvey empfiehlt denn auch nicht, derzeit Bankgeschäfte über Wap-Geräte auszuführen. Der Revo Plus verfüge aber über eine separate Zugangssoftware, die die Internet-üblichen Verschlüsselungstechnologien anwendet. Das Herunterladen einer normalen Web-Site dauere – im Gegensatz zu der speziell aufbereiteten Wap-Seite – allerdings mehrere Minuten.
Zudem seien die meisten Wap-Seiten auf sehr kleine Bildschirme zugeschnitten. Carsten Schmidt, Analyst bei Forrester Research, sagt, das größere Display bringe deshalb keine Vorteile. Psion erwartet jedoch, dass die Zahl der für die größeren Bildschirme der Taschencomputer entworfenen Seiten zunimmt, zumal auch andere Hersteller der Handheld-PCs bald Wap-fähige Versionen auf den Markt bringen wollen. Palm will seinen elektronischen Organizern in Europa Wap noch in diesem Jahr als Standard beifügen; die US-Firma Hewlett-Packard Co. und die japanische Casio Computer Co. wollen einige ihrer Geräte mit der Technologie ausstatten.
Europäer zeigen bisher wenig Enthusiasmus, via Handy ins Internet zu gehen. Der Grund: Die Übertragungsgeschwindigkeit ist sehr gering. Sieben europäische Hersteller von Mobiltelefonen melden wesentlich niedrigere Verkaufszahlen von Wap-Handys als erhofft; die Deutsche Telekom gab an, dass ihre Wap-Handy-Kunden durchschnittlich nur einmal pro Woche ins Internet gehen.
20 000 Revo Plus sollen wöchentlich hergestellt werden
Psion will wöchentlich 20 000 Revo Plus herstellen. Das Unternehmen preist den Minicomputer als schnurloses Internet-Gerät an, er hat jedoch kein eingebautes Modem. Britische Radiosender werden künftig Spiele, Videos und Web-Sites zusammen mit ihren digitalen Audio-Programmen ausstrahlen. Möglich macht das ein digitaler Radiowellen-Empfänger des Londoner Hardware-Herstellers Psion Plc.: Der Wave Finder wandelt die von den Radiostationen gesendeten digitalen Daten in Bilder und Texte um, die auf einem Computermonitor dargestellt werden können.
* Daten werden aus der Luft "gefischt" -> keine Gebühren für Telefonverbindung !!!
* Nutzung z.B. zum Senden von Videos an sehr viele Nutzer gleichzeitig (Kapazitäten der Mobilfunknetze wären überfordert)
* Nachteil: Kunde kann nur das herunterladen, was die Radiostation gerade sendet
* Psion will in spätestens zwei Jahren ein digitales Radio mit Bildschirm im Jackentaschenformat vorstellen (Datenübertragungsgeschwindigkeit: 1,5 Megabit pro Sekunde

Hört sich sehr gut an. Weißt du ob es sich um ein patentiertes Verfahren handelt, oder wer sonst noch diese Entwicklung vorantreibt?
