Metal-powered car breaks down in victory run
By Richard Valdmanis
NEW YORK, Oct 5 (Reuters) - When Dr. Sadeg Faris`s car
broke down in the hills of Pennsylvania this week, cutting
short a journey to Detroit, he did something that most drivers
wouldn`t: he held up his hands in triumph.
The car, powered by zinc, an element commonly found in
super-vitamins, broke down on Tuesday but also broke a Guinness
World Record for the longest run on a single charge by a
modified production vehicle powered by a fuel cell.
In its 217 miles (349 km) journey from West Orange, New
Jersey, the EVictory reached speeds of up to 75 miles per hour
(121 kph), and used only about $4 in fuel, the company said.
It "proved the viability of a new source of energy that is
clean, abundant and low cost," said Faris, president of
Hawthorne, NY-based EVonyx, a subsidiary privately-owned
research firm Reveo Inc.
The over 600 mile (965 km) journey to Detroit was designed
to highlight EVonyx`s progress in metal-power technology, which
the company says may one day replace costly and environmentally
damaging fossil fuels.
And while the car had an unfortunate leak of potassium
hydroxide from its "engine, forcing it to stop in Howard, Pa.,
EVonyx officials said the breakdown was irrelevant to the
technology`s promise.
"The same energy source (metal) can be used in a wide range
of applications from cell phones to power tools to cars, even
to factories," he said. "We feel this new technology will
revolutionize the way energy is generated and distributed."
While high oil prices and environmental concerns have led
to a rush toward alternative energy by a variety of companies,
EVonyx said it`s metal technology has advantages over the more
common hydrogen fuel cells.
"When introduced to the market in the future, (it) will be
both refuelable and rechargeable," according to a company
release -- meaning the metal fuel, namely zinc, can be replaced
in the cell and the zinc itself can also be recharged after it
is deionized.
Faris said he believes there is enough zinc already mined
to power the world for years without recharging. He added that
recharging, since it requires energy in itself, could be done
through clean methods like solar or wind power.
"The mission is to eliminate fossil fuels altogether," he
said. EVonyx`s technology removes energy from metal by using
oxygen and an electrolyte to provide a conductive path for ion
transfer.
The process produces no heat and uses no hazardous
materials. The only by-product is the rechargeable deionized
metal.
The metal-powered car demonstration was one of a number of
demonstrations the company plans over the next 12 months, and
since the car broke down, one of those demonstrations will
likely be another attempt at reaching Detroit -- the production
hub of gasoline-powered cars.
"We will probably try again, because we know this car has a
range potential of much higher than we achieved," said Faris.
