notes I took from the Conf Call
(I don`t hold JDSU, I hold EXTR...but I thought you`d like to see it)
Outlook for JDSU and manufacturers for the industry look great.
Growth will continue into the next quarter and beyond.
786$m in sales ...
continuing surge and demand in industry.....
Alcatel, Lucent and Nortel customers....sales to nortel grew faster than their overall sales....
unexpectedly high growth in sales....
strong operating cash flow....
Infrastructure development - proceeding as planned.
now CEO -
re: customers - booked orders in the hundreds of millions of dollars....shipping all kinds of products....
new product flow is excellent....puts more pressure on their manufacturing
another `head` - didn`t get name
re: near term demand.....80 sales engineers worldwide...
they do NOT see inventory builds.....do not see double bookings, or size of orders, or no stretch-out for delivery orders
already placed.
Customer orders for their products are keeping up with their output growth. Want to reduce lead times so they can be even
more responsive to their customers.
Total customer base is sufficiently broad.
Demand remains strong - do not see or can find any meaningful evidence of an industry slowdown.
expansion plan --- on pace to increase capacity 4 fold in any 18 mo period (more physical expansion..)building in almost
every location worldwide.
Outsourcing - using Celestica and looking for more outsourcing partners.
[lost signal for about 2 mins, now back]
significantly higher backlog....
Must increase guidance for sales growth -
Margin guidance remains unchanged.....
Tax rate 34% for 2001
Earnings per share - was 17 - think it will be 2-3 cents higher for quarter..... 70 cents for year they are increasing to 80
cents
Growing rapidly...
Biggest challenge is to expand capacity fast enough to serve customers.
Questions:
UBS Warburg - re: demand from top 3 customers and MEMS product....
customers - serve full range of customers in the industry; our 3 big customers ... no single customer dominates the
equation...moving along nicely....Remain capacity constrained, therefore ability to deal with variations in demand is quite
good. Within a quarter will have that ability...
Goldman Sachs - congrats... leadtime and inventory builds..
Substantial amount of time (sales) with customers. Give jdsu visibility in their needs. Because we are capacity
constrained, they discuss with their customers constantly...they know their requests and demands are real, so we have a
real level of conversation and requests.
JP Morgan - congrats....re: Metro space and new players in the marketplace - comments on Cisco, JNPR, SCMR....
answer: Comfortable that the market is starting to move rapidly....(didn`t really answer question! hmmm)
CIBC World Markets - asks about customers and Metro.....
answer: gross margin is number that represents product mix, yield improvements (their gross margin IS within their
guidance)...
CSFB - re: operating margins and last few quarters... and competitive landscape (mentions Lucent and Alcatel)
answer: trending pretty consistently - changes not significant. Market is still growing, we welcome competitive environment.
We`re firing on all cylinders.
SSBarney - re: characterize systems placement and systems growth....guidance for optical components
answer: optical segment is growing very attractively, entire industry expects that to continue. The merchant segment is
expanding more rapidly than the captive segment.
Supply/demand is going to remain tight for the next several quarters and beyond - that`s why they need to continue growth.
First Union - congrats - re: passives growing more than actives and on Lucent that came in better than alot of people
expected - what drove that?
answer: biggest reason for passive/active was ETEK acquisition. Steady supply of amplifiers to Lucent.
Chase H&Q - long question on products
All our acquistions in Telecomm space are being brought along in this growth.
Adams, Harkness - congrats and re:
[ damn thing keeps disconnecting! Didn`t hear what he said]
CEO now saying.....book to bill very solidly above 1.
SG Cowen - great quarter ...re: constraints on optical component side and carrier spending plans
answer: Talking to our customers, and to our customers customers. Delivery remains very strong.
Dain Rauscher Wessels..congrats re: Lucent
answer: provide any suppliers what they need to meet their needs.... (only got half this)...
WR Hambrect re: operating efficiencies
answer: Trends across board in productivity that stem from operating efficiency improvemnts continue unabated. Feel very
good. Very close to our target of head count growth (employees)
ABN Amro congrats and re: guidance and expectations for Lucent and nortel for this 1/4....
answer: don`t provide guidance for customers...pushing our next generation filter technology and active in AWG arena..will
be 100% effective and competitive. AWG is going to be an impt player.
Epic Partners... congrats and re: shipping products and the market
answer: just starting to get products re: Metro market
Paine Webber - re: capacity constraint
answer: This is noise level...they have 30 facilities around the world, in total we do get a few percentage points difference
from quarter to quarter. Last was ETEK... now is starting to average out a bit. Growth guidance for dec quarter is for
sequential growth in the high teens.
UBSWarburg - re: lead times on filters and amplifiers...and
Nortel question
THe lead tiems for our passive WDM devices remain the same that they`ve been he past 2 quarters. 8 weeks and have not
changed over the last couple of quarters. Will not comment on Nortel at all. Guidance includes their judgements about
Nortel and everybody else. Guidance is based on interactions with Nortel at the engineering and procurement level that is
as current of this week.
