Press Release
PSINet To Add 30 Million Monthly Point of Sale Transactions Through Alliance Data Systems
ASHBURN, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 12, 2000--PSINet Transaction Solutions, a wholly owned subsidiary of PSINet Inc. (NASDAQ:PSIX - news), today announced that as of December, its point of sale network will carry 30 million more monthly transactions to Alliance Data Systems (ADS).
The agreement represents a 70 percent increase in transactions to ADS, which has been a customer of PSINet Transaction Solutions since 1992.
The rise in transactions resulted from Alliance Data Systems` acquisition of the networks services business of SPS Payment Systems and their decision to move the traffic from that acquisition to PSINet`s transaction network.
``We appreciate the ongoing growth that has occurred during our eight-year relationship with ADS and are pleased that they chose our network for these new transactions,`` said Rod Lyman, president and chief operating officer at PSINet Transaction Solutions. ``We look forward to providing Alliance Data Systems with new services that will assist them in meeting the emerging transaction processing needs of their merchant customers.``
A point-of-sale transaction occurs when a shopper uses a credit or debit card to make a purchase or obtain cash. The ``swipe`` of the card sends a request for payment electronically through the PSINet Transaction Solutions network to a processor, which routes the transaction to the bank or company that issued the shopper`s card. The issuing bank or company returns an electronic message to the point of sale, authorizing funds to complete the sale or withdrawal.
PSINet Transaction Solutions` secure point-of-sale network in 1999 carried more than 6.7 billion transactions from merchants, debit card users, and other points of sale to banks and processors, such as Alliance Data Systems.
Based in Dallas, Alliance Data Systems is a leading provider of electronic transaction services, credit services, and loyalty and database marketing services. It manages nearly 74 million consumer accounts and processes nearly two billion transactions annually. Alliance Data Systems employs more than 5,000 associates at more than 20 locations in the United States, Canada and New Zealand. For more information about the company, visit its Web site, www.alliancedatasystems.com.
PSINet Transaction Services, headquartered in Reston, Virginia, is a wholly-owned PSINet subsidiary. Formerly Transaction Network Services, Inc., it offers secure, global communications services for transaction-oriented applications over IP and X.25 networks. Additional company information is available on the PSINet web site, www.psi.com/tnsi.
Headquartered in Ashburn, VA, PSINet is an Internet Super Carrier offering global eCommerce infrastructure and a full suite of retail and wholesale Internet services through wholly-owned PSINet subsidiaries. Services are provided on PSINet-owned and -operated fiber, satellite, Web hosting and switching facilities providing direct access in more than 900 metropolitan areas in 28 countries on five continents. PSINet information may be obtained by e-mail at info@psi.com, by accessing the Web site at www.psinet.com or by calling in the U.S., 800/799-0676.
This release contains information about management`s view of the Company`s future expectations, plans and prospects that constitute forward-looking statements for purposes of the safe harbor provisions under The Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1995.
Actual results may differ materially from those indicated by these forward-looking statements, as a result of a variety of factors including, but not limited to, competitive developments, risks associated with the Company`s growth, the development of the Internet market, regulatory risks and other factors that are discussed in the Company`s Annual Report on Form 10-K and other documents periodically filed with the SEC.
