      @Hallo Motorolens !! :yawn:

Was Morgen ist weiß nämlich keiner genau.

      @Börsenratte

      Ich kann Dich trösten.
      jetzt alles aufs Sparbuch.

      werden.

      @All

Also geht man hin, verkauft was das Zeug hält.

12/01 06:17 FEATURE-Tech firms that made TVs smart are set to lose edge

By Lucas van Grinsven and Jana Sanchez

LONDON/AMSTERDAM, Nov 30 (Reuters) - The TV set is rapidly becoming the smartest device in the home after a decade of false starts, and a host of technology companies is eager to cash in.

But will these firms turn the promise into profits?

Technology companies may have made smart TV possible, but they could have drawn the short straw, specialists said.

Chips and software run a big risk of becoming commodities, while the most valuable assets sit with network operators and the producers of movies, sports and television shows.

Technology companies are the first to acknowledge that the smart TV industry is very different from the PC era in which microprocessors and software makers ruled unrivalled.

Germany`s set-top box maker Grundig [GRNG.UL] put it very clearly when it told a set-top box conference in London this week that it is "at the bottom of the food chain".

"We get squeezed all the time," said Martyn Gough, director of Digital Strategy at Grundig.

Others agree, such as Dan Sutorius, marketing director of Motorola`s <MOT.N> set-top box unit. "Content is king," he said.

Ironically, smart TV has only been made possible by the technology companies which have delivered powerful chips, superfast fibre optic data networks and vast computer memory.

      TECHNOLOGY ADVANCES MADE TELEVISIONS SMART

Experiments with smart television started as early as 1990 in the U.S., but failed because of huge costs and technology constraints. Until recently, the set-top box, a computer which sits atop the television, served only to receive and unscramble the cable or satellite television signal.

But computer technology has made leaps in the past 10 years, with computer memory and microprocessors almost halving in price every year, meaning that operators can give away cheap set-top boxes that will turn any tube into a computer.

Consumers can then surf the Internet, send e-mail or shop in electronic malls. Set top-boxes will let viewers store shows, fast-forward, skip ads, order movies and play games.

Smart television has such potential that cable networks, terrestrial television network providers and satellite TV companies are each investing hundreds of millions of euros.

Very soon they will be joined by operators who will offer smart TV over supercharged copper telephone wires, a technology known as Digital Subscriber Line (DSL). British Sky Broadcasting <BSY.L>, already a European powerhouse in satellite TV, was reported this week to be preparing to launch DSL early in 2001.

These operators, such as pan-European cable operator UPC <UPEC.AS>, France`s Canal Plus <CNLP.PA>, Britain`s ONDigital <CCM.L><GME.L> are best placed to reap the rewards from their investments, said analyst David Mercer at Strategy Analytics. "If the companies that control the networks don`t make money, no one is going to make money," he said.

Adrian Dowle of C-Cube <CUBE.O>, a chip producer for set-top boxes, agrees "only the content providers will be making money. The rest are screwed because these boxes have to be offered for free to consumers, meaning the technology has to be cheap."

TECHNOLOGY COMPANIES FIGHT FOR SLICE OF CAKE

But technology companies claim they can still make decent returns in the next few years by adding features and tailoring to complex networks which have not been standardised yet.

With only about 25 million out of the total one billion television households using digital interactive TV services worldwide, the market is still in its infancy.

But which technology providers will benefit most is unclear, Jack Myers of Myers Reports said. "There are so many competitors and so much confusion, it`s difficult to assess the likely outcome and winners," he said.

In chips for instance, IBM told Reuters this week it is confident it can grab a 35 percent market share for key set-top box microprocessors by late 2003, from its current 10 percent.

It will steal share from established players such as ST Microelectronics <STM.PA>, because the industry is making a transition from simple decoders to complex digital boxes which need to be upgraded instantly.

In set-top boxes, the two U.S. leaders, Scientific-Atlanta <SFA.N> and Motorola, add value by selling end-to-end solutions.

This situation is different in Europe where market leaders Pace <PIC.L>, Philips <PHG.AS> and Nokia <NOK1V.HE> fight for orders with a dozen rivals and face continued stiff competition.

      NOT ANOTHER MICROSOFT

Then there`s software. Analysts are struggling to predict which middleware -- the software that builds the framework inside a set-top box -- will dominate.

ING Barings analyst Spencer Wang, says predicting the eventual winner is too difficult this early in the game.

"I see consolidation coming. You will probably have two to three major players out of the current five or six," he said.

"OpenTV <OPTV.O> is clearly the market share leader. Liberate <LBRT.O> has deployed about 400,000 boxes. Microsoft <MSFT.O> is playing catch-up," Wang said.

Market leader OpenTV <OPTV.AS>, with an installed base of 11 million boxes, has locked in the big satellite TV operators, but more complex software may be needed for true interactive TV.

Microsoft, used to the luxury of a virtual monopoly in PC software, has commitments from cable operators for about 15 million boxes, but faces big delays in rolling out software to UPC <UPEC.AS> and U.S.-based AT&T <T.N>.

"There are a lot of barriers to Microsoft getting a foothold in this market," said Gartner Group analyst Paul O`Donovan. Operators and consumer electronics makers fear Microsoft, because it would limit choice.

This plays into the hands of Liberate which recently struck a deal with America Online <AOL.N> that added to its clout.

European players, including CanalPlus Technologies, Rupert Murdoch`s NDS <NNDS.ED>, but also PowerTV <SFA.N>, are seen as less likely to prevail. PowerTV, the software division of set-top box maker Scientific Atlanta is seen as too close to its parent company to sell to other hardware makers, analysts said.

There is also a host of applications that sit on top of this middleware. Because of the fragmented nature of the market, operators can shop around for cheap yet exclusive services.

"It`s a highly fragmented market. Competitive operators want exclusivity and don`t need inter-operability," said Guy Bisson, editor of market research journal Screen Digest. (additional reporting by Scott Hillis in Seattle)

Motorola says sees US$50 billion 3G market in Asia
HONG KONG, Dec 4 (Reuters) - Telecommunications equipment and chip maker Motorola Inc. (NYSE:MOT - news) said on Monday that it is talking to wireless carriers throughout Asia to sell its network systems for high-speed third generation (3G) wireless services.
Bo Hedfors, President of Motorola`s network systems segment, which builds the equipment running wireless communications systems, told Reuters the opportunities presented by 3G services would create a US$50 billion market in Asia over the next four years.
``The business model for 3G is valuable,`` Hedfors said in an interview, ``We value the total 3G market globally as being US$200 billion, US$112 billion will be in Europe, and about US$50 billion is in Asia.``
Hedfors said that Motorola was talking to carriers in Hong Kong, China, Singapore, Thailand, as well as Australia.
Although he declined to comment on where those discussions were heading, he said: ``China is going to be aggressive in building 3G-type services.``
As the global wireless market moves toward 3G services, which offer faster connections capable of carrying video and CD-quality sound, carriers will have to upgrade their systems using technology offered by companies like Motorola and Japan`s NEC Corp. .
The high price of upgrading, plus the added burden of paying for government licences in some countries, have weighed on telecoms stocks worldwide in the second half of this year.
Hedfors said that Motorola, which is the world`s number two manufacturer of cellular phone handsets, was in a strong position to offer both network and handset services as 3G technology begins deployment in 2001.
Hedfors said that 3G systems installation would begin in Europe in the second quarter of 2001.
Motorola`s network systems business is expected to grow by as much as 25 percent in the current business year, the company said earlier this year.
Shares of Motorola closed at US$18.56 trade on Friday on the New York Stock Exchange, less than a third of its split-adjusted peak of US$62.56 set in March.

:Motorola and Oracle Unveil Blueprint for Wireless E-Business Applications
      SCHAUMBURG, Ill. & REDWOOD SHORES, Calif.--(BUSINESSS WIRE)--Dec. 5, 2000--

Industry leaders to create secure, scalable UNIX-based

platform; Blueprint speeds deployment, eases development

and lowers cost for carriers, Internet service providers,

      enterprises, and application vendors

Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT - news) and Oracle Corporation (Nasdaq: ORCL - news) today announced the first release of MObileBlueprint Version 1.0, a reference blueprint designed to help customers, such as carriers, Internet service providers, enterprises and application vendors create mobile e-business applications and deliver them to a growing selection of wireless Internet communication devices around the world. This collaboration between these two industry leaders will provide a systematic framework for customers to deliver existing e-business applications quickly and easily to a broader wireless market, and reduce time and cost for those customers that wish to develop new e-business applications intended for wireless devices.

Using five key components -- WAP and Voice Server interoperability validation, a Wireless Internet Platform core, an application development environment, configuration/deployment guidelines, and system requirements -- MObileBlueprint will help carriers, Internet service providers and enterprise customers create an open-standards UNIX-based platform for wireless applications with the security, reliability and scalability associated with Motorola`s and Oracle`s leading technologies.

``Motorola and Oracle are committed to developing wireless voice and data platforms and applications that meet the critical communication needs of enterprises around the world,`` said Janiece Webb, senior vice president and general manager of Motorola`s Personal Networks Group. ``Pairing Motorola`s leading Internet wireless technology with Oracle`s Internet software capabilities will provide businesses with creative solutions that improve productivity and allow for flexibility in the lives of mobile workers.``

The first of the five key components -- the validation of the Motorola WAP and Voice Servers with Oracle9i(TM) Application Server Wireless Edition -- is expected to be completed in early 2001, followed in summer 2001 by the remaining four key components, including the creation of a wireless Internet platform core based on key technologies from each company. This wireless Internet platform core will integrate key elements of Motorola`s Mobile Internet Exchange(TM) (MIX(TM)), including WAP & Voice Servers, TrueSync(TM) SyncML Server, and the Operations, Administration & Maintenance (OA&M) core, with Oracle9i AS Wireless Edition, including the Oracle8i(TM) Database and Oracle® Internet Directory. The application development environment, configuration/deployment guideline, and system requirement components are also expected to be completed by summer, 2001.

``This unique development blueprint and subsequent wireless enterprise applications will help create new business opportunities for our customers worldwide,`` said Michael Rocha, senior vice president, Platform Technologies Division, Oracle. ``This collaboration with Motorola not only allows us to extend our enterprise offerings to the wireless market, but will also allow us to increase the speed and ease of deployment for our customers, and lower their overall cost of using our joint technologies.``

This announcement represents an extension of an ongoing alliance between the two companies, announced in February 2000, when OracleMobile, a division of Oracle that builds and hosts wireless applications for businesses, began using Motorola`s MIX platform as part of their hosting services. The MObileBlueprint alliance will continue to encompass joint technology, marketing and business development.

      About MObileBlueprint

MObileBlueprint Version 1.0 from Oracle and Motorola will define an architecture and a set of guidelines for the design and implementation of wireless applications delivery systems and for the development of the applications themselves. MObileBlueprint will also provide application vendors with application development kits based on each company`s technologies. The MObileBlueprint solution was created to provide a systematic framework for wireless carriers, Internet service providers and application developers who must address the challenges of interconnecting disparate subsystems, while providing their end users with the most reliable and scalable wireless business applications possible. By leveraging core technologies from Motorola and Oracle, MObileBlueprint enables the creation of an ``untethered`` enterprise, featuring reduced complexity, increased flexibility, and increased manageability for the mobile business professional (a.k.a. ``road warrior``).

      Availability

MObileBlueprint Version 1.0`s overall architecture roadmap can be previewed immediately at www.MObileBlueprint.com. This website -- jointly operated by the two companies -- will be updated as each key component of the architecture is implemented and released. The validation of the Motorola WAP and Voice Servers with Oracle9i Application Server Wireless Edition is expected to be completed in early 2001, scheduled to be followed in Summer 2001 by the remaining four key components.

In addition, a joint Motorola and Oracle development center located in Redwood Shores, CA is scheduled to be open in January 2001 for future testing and validation of products.

      Joint Marketing and Business Development

Motorola and Oracle plan to complement this joint technology development by teaming up to ``mobilize`` the developer community to create innovative wireless enterprise applications, through joint marketing and business development activities. Tapping into expertise in the areas of WAP, VoiceXML, SyncML and Bluetooth, the companies together will drive the creation of innovative e-business applications that function on a broad range of wireless devices, such as Web-enabled phones, two-way personal information communicators and personal digital assistants (PDAs). The ability to manage inventory, sales orders and financial transactions ``on-the-go,`` using wireless Internet devices, represents the future of mobile business applications. Motorola and Oracle plan to commit resources -- including financial support, technology resources and field engineering personnel -- in an effort to make these new enterprise applications a reality for corporations worldwide.

      About Motorola`s Mobile Internet Exchange

Motorola`s Mobile Internet Exchange (MIX) platform is a wireless Internet end-to-end solution. MIX is both network/architecture independent and is a set of feature servers of Motorola`s Aspira(TM) architecture. MIX is comprised of servers- a Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) server for data and a Voice Server for voice - software applications and content. The software applications and access to content, provided by the Myosphere(TM) suite of applications reside on the MIX platform. Additional information is available at www.motorola.com/mix.

2netFX and Motorola Announce Multicast HDTV-over-IP Streaming From 10 to 36 Mbps at Streaming Media West Show
HD Encoder Brings Practical Delivery Rates for HDTV to Standard Corporate Networks
SAN JOSE, Calif., Dec. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- 2netFX announced today that HDTV-over-IP is now available for purchase. The addition of a live high definition encoder from Motorola that is compliant with industry standard protocols, now enables High Definition Television (HDTV) content to be stored for later delivery or multicast in real time over standard corporate data networks, satellite and the Internet. The new technology will be demonstrated next week at Streaming Media West in the 2netFX Booth #630.

``Through the past months of beta testing, our streaming HDTV-over-IP has proven itself for a wide range of applications. Now with the addition of the new digital compression techniques the Motorola HD encoder provides, it truly represents a tremendous breakthrough in multimedia distribution,`` said Eric Yao, Chief Technology Officer at 2netFX. ``HDTV can be easily delivered over switched broadband networks and can effectively multicast HDTV programming over a cyberspace medium to a virtually unlimited number of viewers.``

Marty Stein, Motorola`s senior director of marketing for commercial business systems comments ``Our goal at Motorola, is to design products that conserve bandwidth whenever possible and to maintain good broadcast quality at the lowest possible bit rates.`` He continues, ``I feel that we have lived up to our goal in combining our HD broadcast encoder with HDTV-over-IP from 2netFX.

According to Yao, the HDTV-over-IP streaming technology, was over three years in development. With the help of TeraLogic and 3Com, 2netFX can now provide a vast array of advanced e-business applications for broadcast companies, telecom carriers, businesses, distance learning and institutions that use data networks to deliver services to employees, customers, and users.

Yao added that this breakthrough technology will transform the entertainment and information broadcast industry by offering a replacement for expensive and complex analog television transmissions. Using 2netFX software, HDTV digital video transmission will offer higher quality, greater interactivity, and flexibility than analog at a lesser cost and with lower bandwidth utilization.

HDTV is a digital television standard that offers high-resolution, superior video and DVD-quality sound distribution over cable TV lines and satellite TV systems. The new 2netFX technology permits the same HDTV standard (using the identical MPEG-2 MP@HL file format and compression standard specifications) to be used over commonplace corporate data networks and the Internet.

HDTV-over-IP enables Internet Service Providers, cable television companies and telecommunication carriers to base new services on HDTV technology, offering HDTV network services with higher resolution than today`s video technologies, plus real-time quality of service.

This is a major advancement in the presentation of multimedia content and sets a new direction for leveraging the enhanced capabilities that broadband enables. Julia Rasekhi, Alliance Manager for 3Com`s Solutions Lab states, ``HDTV-over-IP is an extremely useful tool that people will use to create a visually stunning and content-rich, online e-Network experience. We expect it will also rapidly facilitate the general acceptance of HDTV.``

Combining the innovative technologies of four leading companies paves the way for broadcasters, carriers, and service providers to offer compelling high-definition, broadband digital video and data services to the masses. Raghu Rao, director of marketing for TeraLogic, said, ``The collaboration between 2netFX, 3Com, and TeraLogic gives us a clear technology leadership in enabling the distribution of HDTV content over a standard IP network.``

Yao added, the four companies envision long-distance applications for next-generation high-speed Internets, such as Internet2 or MMDS/LMDS wireless access systems for homes. He added that 2netFX is also partnering with AirSwitch, World Wide Packets and others to deliver HDTV content to a multitude of homes that are now being equipped with 100 MB to 1 GB ethernet connections.

      About HDTV over IP:
-- HDTV-over-IP runs over an industry-standard Ethernet LAN, using 3Com
networking equipment, such as SuperStack II Switch 3900 system and
Fast EtherLink network interface card for a desktop computer.
-- The HDTV video streaming was enabled by a Microsoft NT-based server
(Linux is also available), TeraLogic`s Janus single-chip HDTV decoder
board and software, as well as a specialized 2netFX HDTV-over-IP video
streaming server and client software. The software adheres to
Microsoft`s standards-based DirectShow streaming video architecture.

      Celestica-Motorola Deal Worth $1 Billion

TORONTO (Reuters) - Electronics manufacturer Celestica Inc. (NYSE:CLS - news) said on Wednesday it struck a deal with Motorola Inc. (NYSE:MOT - news) that included a supply agreement worth more than $1 billion over a three-year period.

Headquartered in Schaumburg, Illinois, telecommunications equipment and chip-maker Motorola said it signed the deal to remain competitive and consolidate manufacturing operations that would allow it to cut costs by laying off employees.

Celestica said in a statement it will provide electronics manufacturing services for a broad range of Motorola wireless telecommunications products, such as cellular phones, messaging devices, two-way radio products and related accessories.

And Celestica will acquire Motorola`s manufacturing assets in Dublin, Ireland, and Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, for $70 million subject to post-closing adjustments. It is expected that about 1,200 employees will join Celestica, the company said.

``Motorola must remain nimble in order to stay ahead of the marketplace and grow our position as a technology leader,`` said Christopher Galvin, Motorola chairman and chief executive.

The agreement is expected to close in the first quarter of 2001, and Celestica said it will manufacture some Motorola cellular phone handsets, messaging devices, two-way radio products and accessories for at least three years at the Mt. Pleasant facility and two years in Dublin.

Motorola said it would eliminate 2,870 jobs out of a total of 130,000 as a result of manufacturing consolidation. Motorola said Celestica would offer jobs to about 650 of Motorola`s 1,400 workers in Dublin and 550 of the 670 Mt. Pleasant employees.

Motorola added that of the 800 employees at its Boynton Beach, Florida, operations, who will also be affected, 100 will be eligible to transfer to the Fort Worth, Texas, facility and another 250 will be eligible to transfer to its office in Plantation, Florida
