New RealNetworks software to improve Webcasts
embargoed for 0001 EST Monday Dec 11

SEATTLE, Dec 11 (Reuters) - Internet media software companyRealNetworks Inc. (NasdaqNM:RNWK - news) on Monday unveiled a new software package it says will dramatically improve the reliability of Web broadcasts.

The new product, called RealSystem iQ, will eliminate most delays common in video and audio feeds sent using current technology, Ben Rotholtz, general manager of Real`s products and systems division, said in an interview.

``What we are going to see here is huge efficiencies for content delivery networks, which will ultimately put smiles on the faces of consumers,`` Rotholtz said.

The software will be deployed among the sprawling networks that pipe content from Web sites to consumers. Such companies include Akamai Technologies Inc. (NasdaqNM:AKAM - news) and Digital Island Inc. (NasdaqNM:ISLD - news).

The software underpins Real`s best-known consumer product, the RealPlayer, for receiving video and audio on the Web. That product has 160 million unique registered users and is used on 88 percent of all home PCs, Rotholtz said.

The announcement comes as Real`s stock price has slumped from a year high of $96 a share to $14-5/16, its lowest level in nearly two years, part of a recent downturn among many Internet-related companies.

Rotholtz said that with the release earlier this year of Real`s latest technologies for converting video and audio into Web-ready form, Internet media quality was close to perfect -- at least under ideal conditions.

``The big question has been how do get it from here to here? On Ben`s local demo it looks great, but how will it play in Missouri?`` Rotholtz said.

      `SELF-AWARE` SERVERS

For example, today a company in Los Angeles that wants to send video over the Internet might end up first beaming it to a giant computer in Denver, which would then beam it back to smaller machines in Los Angeles and finally on to consumers.

RealSystem would let that content be sent directly to the Los Angeles machines, bypassing the lengthy detour to Denver, Rotholtz said.

``If there is one big sea change with RealSystem iQ it is that servers become self-aware and they interoperate,`` Rotholtz said. ``We`re moving from one-to-many to many-to-many.``

The package also features a new product called RealSystem Proxy, which copies content from its original Web site on to local machines closer to the user, cutting down on transmission problems and lightening the traffic burden on the main site.

When enough partners deploy the product, something Rotholtz said could happen within six months, it could spell an end to such headaches as not being able to view a Webcast because the network can`t handle all the traffic.

``Like a live concert, everybody that decides they want to access that concert will get in, they won`t get thrown off, and they will get a reliable, high-quality experience,`` Rotholtz said.

RealSystem 8 will be available in beta, or test, form initially but a final version would be available by the end of the year, Rotholtz said. Most existing Real customers would get the software as part of their current contracts.

RealNetworks Unveils RealSystem iQ - Transformational New Architecture For Intelligent Digital Media Delivery
Neuralcast Technology Makes `Origins` and `Edges` Obsolete; Offers Peer-to-Peer Capability for Streaming Servers, Increases Reliability And Scalability of Media Delivery
Industry Adoption Paves the Way for the Elimination of Media Delivery Congestion
SEATTLE, Dec. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- RealNetworks®, Inc. (Nasdaq: RNWK - news) today unveiled RealSystem® iQ, a new foundational architecture for digital media delivery. The standards-based RealSystem iQ dramatically increases the reliability of Internet broadcasts, scales to the largest audiences possible, and provides unprecedented flexibility and cost-effectiveness for media delivery network deployments.

``RealSystem iQ is another big step forward toward our longstanding goal of turning the Internet into the next great mass medium,`` said Rob Glaser, Chairman and C.E.O. of RealNetworks, Inc. ``By enabling peer-to-peer networks of streaming servers, RealSystem iQ results in Internet broadcasts that are smarter, faster and simply better -- and it sets the stage for digital media delivery to become a true mass phenomenon.``

``With RealSystem iQ, RealNetworks clearly is taking a major step forward in providing a more reliable way to deliver digital media to vastly larger audiences,`` said David Bishop, President and C.O.O. of MGM Home Entertainment. ``With the largest library of filmed entertainment in the world, MGM Home Entertainment is excited about advancements in digital media delivery that will allow us to deliver the kind of high-quality media experience our consumers have come to expect.``

RealNetworks today also announced that a wide array of content delivery networks (CDN) and technology partners are deploying and embracing RealSystem iQ. CDN customers include Deutsche Telekom, Digital Island, Enron Broadband Services, iBEAM, Intel IMS, Madge.web, Mirror Image Internet, NET-36 (a PamAmSat Company), and Speedera. Technology companies supporting RealSystem iQ include Adobe Systems, Avid Technology, CacheFlow, EMC, F5 Networks, Hewlett Packard, IBM, Inktomi, Intel, Lucent Technologies, Macromedia, Network Appliance, SecureMedia, and Sun Microsystems.

``AOL has deployed the RealSystem software through our network to provide a high-quality audio/video experience for our members,`` said Terry Laber, AOL Vice President for Systems Operations. ``We`re excited about the new innovations RealNetworks continues to bring to digital media delivery.``

``RealNetworks is the clear technological leader in providing digital media delivery systems,`` said Hans Wehner, Vice President Multimedia Distribution Services, Deutsche Telekom AG. ``We are excited to offer the quality of RealSystem iQ to our content customers in the future.``

      Key Advantages of RealSystem iQ

RealSystem iQ operates at many levels to eliminate congestion in the ``middle of the network.`` Previous technologies relied on origin servers to distribute media streams hierarchically to edge servers and then to consumers. RealSystem iQ with Neuralcast(TM) Technology fundamentally changes this ``one-way`` approach of origin-to-edge distribution. By creating honeycombs of distributed interconnected servers, RealSystem iQ empowers all servers to broadcast into the network, receive content from any other server, and deliver media to end consumers. Neuralcast Technology provides the uniform foundation for routing media from one server to many via standard network protocols. In addition, the architecture of RealSystem iQ can enable the transport and delivery of all media types.

As a result, RealSystem iQ offers unprecedented benefits to companies engaged in digital media delivery: media content can be injected at any point; media flows intelligently between servers in both directions; sound and picture quality are improved dramatically; service providers` costs are lowered; the network is designed to deliver nearly 100% reliability in transmissions over vast geographic areas; and audience size can scale to millions.

      Reliability

Content delivery networks are capable of achieving near-100% reliability by utilizing RealSystem iQ`s forward error correcting technology and its ability to send redundant media streams over different parallel network segments. RealSystem iQ`s terrestrial delivery capabilities are complemented by the integrated support of satellite delivery technology.

RealSystem iQ is the first Internet media delivery system to support both satellite and terrestrial media delivery within one distributed network architecture. With RealSystem iQ, media content can be transmitted up to a satellite and then multicast simultaneously to numerous RealSystem Servers located at ISPs and other content delivery locations, thus enabling incredibly large and efficient broadcasts. Satellite delivery has the added benefit of providing paths for delivery to remote locations that are not equipped with terrestrial networks capable of robust media delivery.

``RealSystem iQ`s ability to seamlessly support satellite and terrestrial transmissions is an important part of our implementation of streaming media via the NET-36 satellite to edge content delivery network,`` said Bill Moses, CEO of NET-36, a PamAmSat Company. ``With greater streaming capability and reliability, RealSystem iQ`s Neuralcast technology provides a superior system of digital media delivery.``

      Scalability

RealSystem iQ enables content delivery networks to dynamically distribute stream capacity at times of heavy traffic and quickly adjust to spikes in usage -- addressing the most pressing challenge for today`s networks. RealSystem Server 8, a core component of the new architecture, takes advantage of multi-processor servers and has achieved up to 100% capacity improvements.

``Developing an infrastructure for Internet broadcasting that is capable of reaching a worldwide audience both reliably and cost effectively, presents a huge challenge to network operators,`` said Jonathan Schwartz, senior vice president of corporate strategy and planning, Sun Microsystems, Inc. ``With up to twice the performance of previous versions, RealSystem iQ for our family of Sun Enterprise(TM) servers and storage delivers the performance and quality-of-service the market demands.``

      Flexibility

RealSystem iQ meets the demands of large and emerging broadcasters by providing a single standards based media delivery system that supports a broad range of media types and is configurable for any network. By supporting narrowband and broadband content, radio and music as well as high-quality video content can be broadcast cost-effectively over a single Internet media delivery system. RealSystem iQ facilitates consolidation of media delivery infrastructures through its support of more than 45 media types, including RealAudio®, RealVideo®, Apple`s QuickTime, Flash 4, and streaming MP3. RealSystem iQ`s distributed architecture is highly flexible and supports network configurations ranging from clusters for serving content to dense local populations, to national and international networks carrying Internet media over vast distances, without compromising the quality of the media experience for consumers.

RealSystem iQ lays the foundation for delivering media to devices beyond the PC and for creating the global network. As consumer device adoption grows, the structure of RealSystem iQ is uniquely able to address the media delivery needs of those devices and networks. In addition, RealSystem iQ provides the base framework enabling peer-to-peer relationships between individual content delivery networks. With RealSystem iQ, content delivery networks are now poised to link together to reach audiences of many millions. All of these capabilities of RealSystem iQ are built upon proven and widely-accepted industry standards including RTSP, RTP and SMIL.

``RealSystem iQ`s ability to deliver multiple media types, especially Apple`s QuickTime, shows true leadership from RealNetworks and is invaluable to us,`` said Cos Santullo, president and CEO, at Mirror Image Internet. ``As a result of our partnership with RealNetworks, Mirror Image is excited to deploy RealSystem iQ across our global Content Access Point network to offer customers an attractive business model and provide end users with the best media experience possible.``

      RealSystem Proxy 8

To boost the scalability, reliability and flexibility of specialized networks, such as enterprise and ISP networks, RealNetworks today also introduced RealSystem Proxy 8. RealSystem Proxy 8, another key component of RealSystem iQ, allows enterprises and ISPs to manage in bound bandwidth, reducing costs and ensuring media delivery quality through intelligent management of live and on-demand content requested by users in these networks. RealSystem Proxy 8 is particularly suited for organizations that have a large amount of digital media flowing into or over their network. RealSystem Proxy 8 is available directly from RealNetworks and from several Certified RealSystem Compatible licensees of the RealSystem Proxy SDK.
