@Ernestobroke
WITH `BUY` RECOMMENDATION AT ABN AMRO

Sycamore Head`s Vision Not Meshing With Market Realities
By Scott Moritz

Sycamore`s (SCMR:Nasdaq - news) co-founder and chairman, Gururaj "Desh" Deshpande, is used to playing the maverick. Even so, it`s getting mighty lonely in Sycamore`s corner these days.
Sick of Sycamore?
Investors flee optical black sheep
Hellbent on remaking the optical Internet, Deshpande has no time to heed the teachings of old telcos. So he`s refused to have Sycamore`s new-generation Internet equipment certified by the industry`s equipment-standards body. In doing so, Deshpande has forsaken selling gear to the Bells, which are among the biggest spenders in a business suddenly chock-full of sputtering, cash-strapped upstarts. Now, with the economy slowing and telcos pinching their pennies, observers are wondering whether Sycamore`s futuristic but costly networking revolution can prevail.
That picture is stark enough, considering Sycamore shares have fallen by two-thirds from their spring highs. But the risk is only heightened when you`re a start-up competing with deep-pocketed outfits like Nortel (NT:NYSE - news) and Ciena (CIEN:Nasdaq - news) for the business of big spenders like Verizon (VZ:NYSE - news) and SBC (SBC:NYSE - news).
Changes
Back in the roaring tech days of last year, investors gushed over Chelmsford, Mass.-based Sycamore`s growth prospects, as scores of lavishly funded new telcos raced ahead to build this century`s communications railroads, the optical Internet. Today, however, funding has dried up and investors are worrying about Sycamore`s James Dean attitude.
Still, Deshspande isn`t budging. To him, Sycamore`s optical switching technology is an agent of change working outside the boundaries of traditional electronic and first-generation optical phone gear. Deshpande likens Sycamore to the PC makers that crumbled the mainframe computing empire.
"It doesn`t make sense for us to go backward," says Deshpande. "If we make our PC look like a mainframe, we are not going to win the game. That`s silly and that`s absolutely not our strategy."
Desh does mesh
This is a crucial time for Deshpande and Sycamore. The executive`s apparent inflexibility hasn`t played well on Wall Street, as Sycamore`s own standards initiative has lost a couple of key players. Now, as more equipment buyers find they have less money, Sycamore has to prove its technology is indeed revolutionary while assuring investors that the industry will beat a path to its door.
Sycamore makes optical transport and switching equipment. These are the computers that send, manage and redirect data-bearing laser beams through fiber-optic networks. Like its upstart networking rivals Ciena and Corvis (CORV:Nasdaq - news), Sycamore has taken a new path in optical architecture known as mesh networks.
In simple terms, mesh trumps the current ring topology, both in capacity and efficiency. Rings, which are based on synchronous optical networking, or SONET, technology, use duplicate, fixed-fiber routes to move traffic. The redundant unused fiber provides a backup in case the first route is cut by a backhoe, for example. Mesh, which allows traffic to take any number of routes between two points, offers similar reliability but uses wave-division multiplexing, or WDM, a prismlike method of splitting light into component colors, thereby multiplying the amount of information that can travel through a given strand of fiber.
No `I` in Desh
The rules that Deshponde won`t play by in this case are equipment interoperability standards -- simply, an open format that gives new devices the ability to talk with old devices. The old-line phone companies, such as the regional Bells and AT&T (T:NYSE - news), use Telcordia, formerly Bellcore, as their agent to coordinate the equipment certification process, known as OSMINE, for operations systems modification of intelligent network elements. Getting the stamp of approval takes about eight months and costs nearly half a million dollars. In return, your software and hardware get blessed, meaning they should dovetail with everyone else`s. Certification amounts to a license to peddle your gear to the big spenders.
But Deshponde says certification kills innovation.
"Say six months down the road you get a brand-new laser that works so much better than everyone else`s," Deshponde says. "If it takes three years to get that laser certified, then the Bells have lost all the advantage of the innovation. You need the OSMINE intentions, but you don`t need to comply with every word of it."
Sycamore flouted convention by attempting to chart a new course. The company is one of more than 100 tech firms working on a standard called ODSI, for optical domain service interconnect. But the group, which is attempting to strike its own equipment compatibility standard, was dealt a setback earlier this year when two key optical switch makers -- Ciena and closely held Tellium -- opted out.
"We still have very active participation from the other partners," says Deshpande. "With this initiative, we will have it in a year; by then the rest of the world will know it`s possible and demand it."
Deshponde is unwavering in his certainty about where network technology is headed, and his track record has proved he can at least create something that his competitors want.
The defections were a "serious test, but it is tough to bet against Desh," says a Boston-based hedge fund manager, referring to Deshpande`s track record of building data networking company Cascade and selling it to Ascend, which is now a part of Lucent (LU:NYSE - news).
The Uncertainty
But Deshponde`s high road is far from the easiest road. Not only has Sycamore made it nearly impossible for the old-line telcos to buy its gear, but all buyers must also worry about the expense and complexity of making the equipment compatible with their existing network equipment, say observers.
"Customers know that the lack of standards adds significantly to the cost of the products they buy," says the hedge-fund manager. "As network operators become increasingly focused on [returns on their investments], standards-based equipment potentially has bottom-line advantages."
Having less cash necessitates making the most of each equipment purchase, and that works in Sycamore`s favor, says Deshponde. The flexibility of mesh networks and the ability to provide capacity immediately give Sycamore customers the potential to squeeze more sales out of their networks. (See TheStreet.com`s recent chat with Deshponde.)
However, skeptics say when the cash gets tight, telcos are more inclined to squeeze more performance out of their existing gear than sink a fortune into flashy new state-of-the-art systems.
At this point, Sycamore needs to show how traffic will get onto its metro and core network equipment. Access devices, the sort of stuff that needs to sit next to and talk to all the old phone gear, is a missing element of Sycamore`s strategy, says Gina Sockolow, a networking analyst with Brean Murray. Sockolow has a hold rating on Sycamore, and Brean Murray has no banking ties to Sycamore.
Sycamore has a "proprietary railroad," says Sockolow, who is waiting to see whether the company opens up its technology or is forced to slash prices.
As history has shown, railroads that run lots of trains tend to succeed. Those that don`t end up as tourist attractions.

Was will man mehr.
Was wird erwartet ?

Was habt Ihr gehört???
Was habt Ihr gehört???
Hi!

Indikatoren zeigen unterschidliche Bild. Zahlen abwarten dann entscheiden ob rein oder raus. Ich bin aber optimistisch für Sycamore. Mein Loss-Stopp 29,50
@bukabuka, der hat wohl gegriffen!
Was machen wir jetzt?

5-10 jahren.

@dosto,
genau so ist es, am 20.01. für 54,50 raus, habe ich doch gepostet, und am 13.02. für 23,90 rein!
Und nun? 3x darfst DU raten! Schlaumeier
Aktuell wieder 31% +!!! Und was rätst Du jetzt???

@100KV,

kommando.
cmrc, juniper, millenium, nokia, telefonica, corning,
infospace. steht alles irgendwo hier drin.
gruss dosto
der keinen großartigen rebound bei scmr sieht.

@dosto, danke erst mal!
nunquam retrorsum!

mir war ein bißchen langweilig
bin trotzdem richtig erstaunt-kein einziger aufschrei
nichtsdestotrotz, wünsche dir reichlichen segen davon, denn

@dosto,
hast wohl nicht ganz unrecht gehabt! HUT AB!!!
