ANTEC Delivers Scaleable Node and Return Digital Transmitter in One Package; Pushes Fiber Closer to the Home Allows Greater Bandwidth out of the Home
DULUTH, Ga., May 2 /PRNewswire/ -- ANTEC (Nasdaq: ANTC - news), a leader in the hybrid fiber/coaxial (HFC) broadband transport industry, today announced that it is incorporating a 2.5-GHz return digital transmitter into its Laser Link® Proteus(TM) Scaleable Node.

``The return digital transmitter minimizes the amount of active elements in the network, thereby reducing the number of components that need to be monitored and maintained,`` said Bryant Isaacs, President, ANTEC Network Technologies. ``It`s more cost-effective because you are not putting as much equipment out in the field, and it`s more efficient because a digital signal can travel further before `parasitics` degrade the signal. Most importantly, the return digital transmitter is a more robust way to get signal from the customer back to the headend or hubsite.``

The Proteus Scaleable Node gives operators the ability to segment return path signals depending on customer penetration and homes passed and provides a low-cost base configuration for initial network deployment.

``The Proteus Scaleable Node offers flexibility for deep fiber applications,`` said Isaacs. ``When you segment it down, the whole idea of fiber deeper is that you`re providing signal to fewer and fewer homes, ultimately providing more bandwidth per user.``

By using the Proteus Scaleable Node in conjunction with the return digital transmitter, operators can push fiber closer to each individual home, and each customer can get more bandwidth coming back out of their house, in the return path.

``Proteus is one of the best nodes in the industry because of what it offers,`` said Isaacs. ``Because it`s scaleable and modular, operators don`t have to make 100 percent of their investment all at once. It can be upgraded at any time without having to go back and rebuild. The router modules have unity gain so once operators set up their networks, they can go back out, open it up, plug in the transmitters, receivers and routers they need, and they`re ready to go -- there`s no need to re-balance the system.

``As they go forward, the operators can add more transmitters, receivers and different router modules that change the `personality` of the node. They get to decide how they want to segment their traffic or whether they want redundancy or no redundancy. Proteus gives the operators the option of saying how they want a node to perform -- for example, they get to decide if they want only a quarter of the traffic that is fed by this node to be reliant upon one fiber input (the upstream).``

The digital return transmitter for the Proteus Scaleable Node utilizes a dense wave division multiplexing (DWDM) strategy. The transmitter module converts two 5-42 MHz analog inputs to a digital stream and transmits the signal on a 1550 nm ITU grid wavelength back to a headend or hubsite. At the hub, up to 20 wavelengths can be multiplexed onto a single fiber in an optically-passive hub and routed to the headend where the optical signal is received by the Laser Link digital receiver.

ANTEC TeleWire Supply to Demonstrate IDDS and Provide Premise Testing Certification at Cable Tec Expo
ENGLEWOOD, Colo., May 2 /PRNewswire/ -- ANTEC TeleWire Supply will demonstrate its Integrated Digital Drop System (IDDS) in ANTEC`s booth 1384 at the Cable Tec Expo in Orlando, Florida.

``More than half of all trouble calls can be traced back to the drop and subscriber premise portion of the network,`` said Tony Pantoja, Vice President of Product Marketing for ANTEC TeleWire Supply. ``IDDS increases reliability and reduces trouble calls, thereby ensuring customer satisfaction and retention.``

Anchored by ANTEC`s proprietary Regal, Digicon and Monarch drop and subscriber premise products, IDDS consists of premium drop components, engineered and tested as a system to provide increased signal quality and reliability for digital voice, video and data applications. The program also promotes pre-installation planning, drop and subscriber premise testing, and proper installation techniques.

Using a combination of live and simulated signals, the demonstration will show how IDDS reduces signal transmission impediments such as bit error rates (BER), modulation error rates (MER) and intermodulation distortion when compared to an inferior, non-engineered drop.

In conjunction with the IDDS demonstration, ANTEC will offer subscriber premise testing certification, using test equipment manufactured by Tempo and Sadelco. Technicians completing this training will receive a certificate of completion along with the opportunity to enter a drawing for a Palm VII Personal Digital Assistant.
