Chicago Fed Jun National Activity Index -1.02; -0.95 In May
CHICAGO -(Dow Jones)- The Chicago Fed National Activity Index fell to -1.02 in June from an upwardly revised -0.95 in May, the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago said Thursday in its monthly report.
The May figure was revised up from -1.06.
According to the Chicago Fed, there was "no improvement in the U.S. economy in June." This report was the 12th straight to show the index below zero, an indication that the national economy has been growing below trend for a full year. Index values below zero also signal reduced inflationary pressures over the next year.
Sharp reductions in industrial production and manufacturing employment continued to keep the index at a low level in June, the Chicago Fed said. The three-month moving average index, known as CFNAI-MA3, was -1.05 in June, a further deterioration from an upwardly revised -0.99 in May.
The March and June CFNAI-MA3 indexes are consistent with the July 27 report that first- and second-quarter real gross domestic product rose at rates of only 1.3% and 0.7%, respectively, the Chicago Fed said.
