Tungsten Is A Strategic Metal In Time Of War.

The demand for tungsten is widening and it should never be forgotten that it qualifies as a strategic metal in time of war as a result of the role of tungsten heavy alloys in armour piercing shells as a kinetic energy penetrator. At one stage it was superceded by depleted uranium, but the Gulf War raised fears of health dangers to those handling and firing the shells. These same heavy alloys are found in golf club heads, as counter weights for control heads to control the centre of gravity in aeroplanes and in radiation shielding in both nuclear and X-ray facilities.

The other application about which there has been more speculation than action as yet is in the replacement of lead in bullets and shot for both military and sporting purposes. Lead is regarded by environmentalists as a hazardous material and wild fowlers in the UK already have to use shot made of tungsten or bismuth for shooting wirldfowl as birds and fish are poisoned by the spare pellets. Now powdered high density metals such as tungsten are being combined with lighter, softer metals such as tin and zinc to produce metal matrix composite substitutes for lead.

It has taken time and cutting- edge powder metallurgy technology to come up with components which have the controllable density and mechanical properties to match the performance of lead in ammunition. The question now is cost as tungsten has doubled in price over the past year and increased levels of demand over and above those from traditional uses in electric bulb filaments and cutting tools could push it higher. The Chinese, however, hold the balance of power in the tungsten market. For the last five years they kept the price low with releases from stockpile. This stockpile is now acknowledged to be low, but any further rise in the metal price could bring less economic mines in the public sector, and outside it, back into production.

What can be said with a fair degree of confidence is that the price of tungsten is not likely to fall in current conditions and this is good news for Canadian listed Tiberon. Minews wrote on this company only a short time ago, but its latest drilling results from its Nui Phao tungsten project in Vietnam make a good point. The majority of the world`s tungsten mines operate underground at an average grade of approximately 0.3% tungsten trioxide (WO3), Tiberon`s Nui Phao tungsten project has the potential to be a very low cost open pit producer of this strategic and in-demand material. This potential is illustrated by the company`s latest drill results with 70 meters of 0.57% WO3 including 12 meters of 1.47% WO3 in hole NP-57 and 26 meters of 0.99% WO3 in hole NP-56.

The Vietnam government has confirmed that it is interested in encouraging foreign companies to help it develop a modern mining industry and has just granted Tiberon a new expanded gold-polymetallic exploration licence on its Nui Phao project. The new licence replaces the original 32.2 sq. km. polymetallic license and covers an area of 47.9 sq. km. With the inclusion of the right to explore and exploit gold in addition to polymetallic resources, Tiberon will begin work on a previously identified copper-gold target. Separate and distinct from the Nui Phao tungsten project area, the Nui Chiem copper-gold prospect has considerable potential.

The next steps involve getting the Nui Phao tungsten project converted into a mining licence and completing the first resource estimate. The latter should be published in November and initial results on the tungsten metallurgical study should follow in January 2002. By that time the pre-feasibility study should be underway as the pace of the project hots up.
