UPDATE 1-UK gold auction fails to send clear signal
9/12/2001 8:54:00 AM
(Releads, writes through)
By Adrian Dascalu
LONDON, Sept 12 (Reuters) - Britain sold another 20 tonnes of gold on Wednesday, the day after terror attacks against the United States catapulted the metal`s price higher, but traders said the auction gave no clear sign of the market`s direction.
The auction by the Bank of England had an allotment price of $280.00 a troy ounce and it was 4.3 times oversubscribed. It attracted bids totalling 2,755,200 ounces.
Shortly after the auction, spot gold prices zigzagged between $278.00 and $280.00 an ounce. By 1210 GMT spot gold <XAU=> was indicated at $280.00/284.00 a troy ounce, down from levels of around $281 just before the sale.
Before the sale, bullion dealers had been reluctant to predict an auction price.
They said the market was still confused after Tuesday`s attacks which had prompted some investors to buy gold, traditionally seen as a safe haven in times of crisis, sending prices leaping six percent.
There was a possibility that this influence could have led to heightened interest in the auction.
"I wouldn`t say that the auction helped too much," a trader said.
"The market is not that far away from where is was at the morning fix. It was 4.3 times oversubscribed and that is not really that much higher than it has been before," another trader said in reference to the BoE`s previous sale in July, when the figure was 4.1.
"I don`t see prices going too much lower than what they are now. I think gold will stay in the $278-$285 range," he said.
Traders said market players were waiting both for any possible retaliation by the United States government against the attackers and for the re-opening of the U.S. markets.
"It`s just a case of waiting and seeing...a lot of liquidity has been taken out of the market because there is no trade in the U.S. now. I think it will return overtime and I don`t see any major problems over the next few days," a trader said.
The New York Mercantile Exchange, on a division of which gold futures are traded in the United States, will not open for trade on Wednesday as a result of the terror attacks.
No decision has yet been made on whether to start electronic screen trade in the United States.
London gold slid to a benchmark fixing price of $279.50 a troy ounce on Wednesday morning, down nearly three percent from a level of $287.00 at Tuesday`s afternoon fix when investors had sought shelter in solid assets from diving bonds and the dollar.
"Liquidity has been very thin so any price moves will be exaggerated - people are not wanting to run with large positions. Volumes have been thin, but that may be a result of the fact that the auction was coming up," a trader said.
The $4 bid/offer spread remained very large when compared to 50 cents in sessions before the attacks.
"People are still in the clouds...as long as most of us are confused volatility and spreads remain high," a trader said.
Wolfgang Wrzesniok of Dresdner Kleinwort bank said one month option volatility was quoted at 25/30 percent, from around 13 percent earlier this week.
Earlier in the day, traders and analysts praised the BoE decision to proceed with the auction, saying it showed that the market was operating and helping to avoid wild price movements.
"(Wednesday`s) auction will be supportive for the gold price...it could keep a lid on the market," a trader said.
Frederic Panizzutti, head of research at trader GoldAvenue, said the auction would help bring liquidity to a market to which investors had turned for safety following Tuesday`s attacks.
"The scenario with people putting their money into gold will be seen again today and tomorrow, when some people will try to go into gold for small positions, he said.

solange der Goldpreis nicht unter die
200-Tage-Linie geht braucht man wirklich keine

Uhr MESZ erwartet. "Niemand weiß momentan, was er machen
soll.
